    Sarit Shani Hay references the outdoors to design indoor playground

    Tree-like columns and other nature-inspired details feature in this indoor playground, which design studio Sarit Shani Hay has created for the children of employees at an Israeli software company.

    The playground is set on the 15th floor of a skyscraper, surrounded by floor-to-ceiling glass windows that provide uninterrupted views across the city of Tel Aviv.

    Despite this urban setting, Sarit Shani Hay wanted the space to “emphasise closeness to nature” and subtly incorporate biophilic design principles.

    The studio has therefore made reference to the outdoors throughout the scheme.

    Huge, round pieces of sea blue and forest-green carpet have been set into the floor. Circular panels in the same blue and green hues have also been put on the ceiling, bordered by LED tube lights.

    Parts of the floor that are not covered with carpet have been overlaid with plywood or rubber to account for shock absorption.

    A series of tall plywood “trees” with spindly branches have been dotted across the room; a couple of them suspend a swinging hammock, while another supports a gridded toy shelf.

    Plywood was also used to make house-shaped volumes for the children to play in.

    Each of these volumes includes playful interactive features such as ramps, tunnels, rope ladders, sliding poles and secretive nooks.

    The children also have the option of using a climbing wall at the rear of the room, which has different-coloured footholds.

    The project also saw Sarit Shani Hay create a small kitchen where the children can wash their hands and have snacks prepared for them. This space was finished with sea-blue cabinetry and a gridded tile splashback.

    The indoor playground also features a small cafe area, where employees can enjoy their lunch breaks whilst being close to their children.

    A similar colour palette has been applied in the kitchen

    Playgrounds are increasingly offering more than just swing sets and slides. Architecture studio KWY.studio created a play area for a park in Billund, Denmark that includes pink marble sculptures.

    Artist Mike Hewson has also designed a public playground in Melbourne that features giant boulders on wheels, encouraging children to climb and explore intuitively.

    • Tesla is being sued by the widow of an Apple engineer who died in a 2018 car crash.
    • The lawsuit cites statements from Elon Musk promoting the safety of Tesla’s self-driving software.
    • But Tesla’s lawyers say they can’t confirm if he ever said that, because they could be deepfakes.

    Tesla’s lawyers say that Elon Musk’s past statements about the safety of its self-driving feature can’t be trusted because they could be deepfakes, per court filings seen by Insider.

    The electric car company is being sued by Sz Hua Huang, whose husband Walter Huang died in a car crash in 2018.

    The lawsuit – which was first submitted to the Santa Clara County Superior Court in 2019 – alleges that Tesla’s autopilot feature was defective, and accelerated Huang’s car into a concrete barrier after misreading highway lane lines.

    Huang’s lawyers want to interview Musk about statements he made promoting the capabilities of Tesla’s self-driving software.

    Per Reuters, that includes a speech from a 2016 conference, when he said: “A Model S and Model X, at this point, can drive autonomously with greater safety than a person right now.”

    But Tesla’s lawyers say they don’t know whether or not Musk actually said any of those things.

    “At first glance it might seem unusual that Tesla could not admit or deny the authenticity of video and audio recordings purportedly contain statements by Mr. Musk,” they wrote in an April 20 court filing seen by Insider.

    “The reality is he, like many public figures, is the subject of many ‘deepfake’ videos and audio recordings that purport to show him saying and doing things he never actually said or did.”

    On Wednesday, Judge Evette Pennypacker said these arguments were “deeply troubling” and tentatively ordered Musk to be interviewed under oath for three hours about whether he made the statements, Reuters reported.

    “Their position is that because Mr. Musk is famous and might be more of a target for deepfakes, his public statements are immune,” Pennypacker wrote, per Reuters.

    “In other words, Mr. Musk, and others in his position, can simply say whatever they like in the public domain, then hide behind the potential for their recorded statements being a deep fake to avoid taking ownership of what they did actually say and do,” the judge added.

    The lawsuit is scheduled to go to trial on July 31.

    Tesla and an attorney for Huang did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment, sent outside US working hours.

    As you prepare a meal with your dog nearby, you may wonder if dogs can eat bread. If it’s plain white or wheat bread, a small piece is safe, as long as your dog doesn’t have any wheat allergies. Avoid breads with toppings or additional ingredients, such as raisins, onions or garlic, which are common in breads and toxic to dogs, says Dr. Nicole Savageau, who works with mobile veterinary service The Vets.

    “Additionally, some dogs may have sensitivities or allergies to certain grains or ingredients commonly found in bread. It is best to monitor what your dog eats and avoid giving them bread as a regular part of their diet,” she says.

    Can dogs eat wheat bread?

    Though wheat (and white) bread typically won’t harm your dog, it also won’t add any nutritional value to his diet, regardless of your dog’s nutritional requirements, based on his age, existing health conditions and medical history, especially if your dog is on a prescription diet.

    If your vet okays the bread as a treat, stick to plain white and wheat, and give your dog only an occasional small piece. Avoid breads with added ingredients that are toxic to dogs, such as:

    • raisins
    • garlic
    • chocolate
    • macadamia nuts
    • onion
    • seeds
    • xylitol (an artificial sweetener)
    • avocado
    • peanut butter that contains added sugars and salts

    So, don’t give your dog avocado toast, garlic bread or raisin bread, no matter how much she begs. If you’re not sure what ingredients are in your bread, don’t give it to your dog.

    Can dogs eat sourdough bread?

    Yes. Just like white and wheat bread, small pieces of cooked sourdough bread are safe for dogs once in a while, although it also does not add any nutritional value to his diet. Raw sourdough is not safe for your dog, so keep him away from the dough before it’s baked.

    Monitor your dog closely. “It is not necessarily an emergency (unless toxic ingredients are involved), but it is still a cause for concern,” says Dr. Savageau.     In serious cases, dogs can develop a condition called gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), a potentially life-threatening condition that requires immediate veterinary attention, says Dr. Savageau.

    The dangers of feeding bread to your dog

    If you’re baking a loaf of bread, no matter the type of bread, keep your dog away from the dough — it’s extremely toxic to dogs. Yeast-based bread dough can cause a serious condition in dogs called bread dough toxicosis. If you think your dog has eaten some dough, take your dog to the vet immediately.

    Symptoms of bread dough toxicosis include:

    • bloating of the abdomen
    • dry heaving
    • decreased activity
    • incoordination
    • disorientation
    • weakness and seizures

    The Merck Veterinary Manual lists more information on dough toxicity in animals.

    Bottom line: Your dog can eat a small piece of plain white or wheat bread once in a while, but nutritionally speaking, it won’t enrich his life. Treat your dog to a game of fetch or a walk around the block instead!

    Netflix is pushing ahead with its password-sharing clampdown — and research shows that scores of customers have gone on a canceling spree.  

    In the US, the streaming giant said its crackdown on password sharing will start in the current quarter. The proposed plans have been met with fierce backlash from some customers, several of who threatened to cancel their accounts if the rules were enforced.

    However, the policy has already been rolled out in several countries.

    In Spain, where password-sharing rules were enforced in early February, Netflix subscribers have been on a canceling spree, per Bloomberg.

    Citing research from Kantar, Bloomberg reported that Netflix lost more than one million users in Spain during the first three months of 2023. Subscription cancellations in the first quarter tripled compared with the previous period, per Kantar’s research.

    The reaction is not entirely unexpected. In an earnings call in January, Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters said the company was expecting to see “a bit of a cancel reaction” to the policy. In its first-quarter earnings release on April 18, Netflix said the company expected the dip to be temporary before “borrowers” started signing up for their own accounts. 

    How it works

    Netflix has said it can detect when passwords are shared outside a household, which it defines as people who live in the same location as the account owner.

    The company previously said it uses a combination of IP addresses and device IDs to determine if an account is being used in the correct location. If users want to share their account with someone outside their household they can buy an “extra member” and add them to the account, according to Netflix’s help center. This feature is only available in some countries. 

    Paid sharing was initially tested in Costa Rica, Chile, and Peru, where it costs the equivalent of around $2 to $3 to add an extra member account.

    This was later extended to include New Zealand, Canada, Spain, and Portugal.

    The extra member prices differ across countries. In New Zealand, the service costs NZ$7.99 ($5.09) per month, in Canada it costs CAN$ 7.99 ($5.96) per month. In Spain, the service costs 5.99 euros ($6.45), and in Portugal, it’s 3.99 euros ($4.30).

    The company has compared Canada’s reaction to the new policy with what it hopes to achieve in the US.

    “In Canada, which we believe is a reliable predictor for the US, our paid membership base is now larger than prior to the launch of paid sharing and revenue 4 growth has accelerated and is now growing faster than in the US,” the company said in a letter to shareholders after its first-quarter earnings release.

    Netflix has tested other rules aimed at stamping out password-sharing, including temporary-access codes for traveling, Insider previously reported.

    Netflix did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment made outside of normal working hours.

    Everyone loves a puppy. But your current dog may feel differently at first, no matter how adorable the puppy is. It can take weeks or longer for your dog to accept the puppy. Don’t force or rush interactions. Always set them up to succeed.

    To start, avoid the puppy running into your home with your resident dog there. After all, would you want a stranger suddenly rushing up to you in your house? Probably not. And neither does your dog.

    Assuming that your current dog is canine friendly and you’ve chosen a compatible puppy, managing the environment and properly introducing your new puppy to your dog will help you achieve a happy household.

    Steps for the best way to introduce dogs

    Remain calm and upbeat during all introductions to help avoid stress — yours and the dogs. Next:

    • Trade scents. If possible, get a blanket or similar item with the puppy’s scent from the dog breeder or rescue prior to getting him. Place that item where your current dog’s bed is located. This familiarity helps him accept the young newcomer.
    • Introduce the dogs on neutral territory. To prevent your adult dog from becoming territorial, don’t introduce your new puppy in your house or yard. This can be at a friend’s house or other location that your dog doesn’t view as his own turf and where other unvaccinated dogs haven’t been.
    • Each dog should have a separate handler. The two handlers should walk parallel to each other about 10 feet apart. Put both canines on harnesses so that a tight collar or leash doesn’t convey that something’s wrong. Walk in this parallel position for just a few minutes without them meeting.
    • Read your adult dog’s body language. If at any time during the walk or during later introductions, your dog shows that he’s stressed, end the interaction. Even better, end it before your dog becomes stressed.

    Stress signals include:

    • Drooling
    • Raised hackles
    • Tucking his tail, under his body
    • Lip licking
    • Body tension, including furrowed brow
    • Staring at the puppy with a hard stare
    • Ears pulled back
    • Whale eye
    • Moist pads that leave a paw print that’s not heat related
    • Shedding dandruff
    • Have a brief greeting. If your adult dog seems welcoming to your puppy, have his briefly greet for a few seconds using a “say hello” cue. Then have each handler cheerily say “let’s go” and walk away. Do this introduction three times prior to meeting at your house.
    • Exercise each dog physically and mentally before each interaction. Take each for a walk or have each fetch a toy Do a few obedience cues. You want to take the edge off but not have them get too tired before meeting. Make sure the puppy and the dog have separate areas to retreat to when interacting in case either needs a break.

    When you’re ready to introduce your dogs at home,  have a handler take your adult dog outside in your yard.

    How to introduce a new puppy to your dog in your home

    The following steps are ways to introduce them successfully in your home after they’ve met on neutral territory. Only proceed to the subsequent step after they have met successfully during the prior one.

    • Have them meet through a barrier. Put the puppy in an exercise pen or behind a gate. Then have them briefly meet using two handlers, one focusing on the puppy and one focusing on the adult dog. Reward each pup for positive interactions. Call your adult dog away after a few seconds. Do this exercise for a few minutes total and end on a positive note. You may do this set up for a few days until the dogs feel comfortable with each other.
    • Take them on walks together. Do parallel walks together with a handler for each dog. Have them about 10 feet apart, eventually walking closer over time while each is calm. You can do this inside, off territory and in your yard.
    • After your adult dog is accustomed and welcoming to the puppy, have them meet inside with each dog’s leash dragging while wearing harnesses. Be ready to grab the leash and walk them away from each other before interactions become too intense. Take frequent breaks between interactions. End each training session on a positive note while both dogs enjoy the interaction.
    • Meet off-leash. Over time — may take weeks — if they seem to be getting along well, have them meet off-leash, inside. Be ready to interrupt before play becomes rough. Look for play bows and soft, inviting body language. Be ready with two handlers who can each call a dog over to interrupt the play.
    • Reward all positive interactions. Praise and reward each with a yummy treat when they calmly interact.

    Scheduling feeding and training for new puppy and adult dog

    Each canine requires some alone and separate time with you. So have a schedule. Try to keep your adult dog’s prior schedule as much as possible. Maintain the great bond with your adult dog by not upsetting his world unnecessarily.

    • Have a feeding, exercise, play, training and sleep schedule where each pup has some time alone with you. This shows your adult dog that you care for and about him and gives you bonding time with the puppy to teach him some manners.
    • Train each dog separately — then together. Training some basic cues such as attention and name recognition, Come, Sit, Down, Stay, Leave it, Drop it and loose-leash walking will help communicate your rules to the puppy, give him confidence and help further your bond. After the puppy understands some basic manners, assuming your adult dog knows the same cues, have them perform them together sometimes. These cues will help you be able to call each pup away from each other before interactions become too intense. And train your puppy to use a crate.
    • Socialize your puppy. Get your puppy used to all he will be exposed to in the world. Of course, do it at his own pace.

    Rules for new puppy and adult dog interactions

    After the initial interactions are going smoothly and each knows some ground rules, start accelerating their education together, but keep the following principles in mind:

    • Don’t allow either dog to bully the other. Observe all interactions and never leave the young puppy alone with the adult dog. An adult dog who properly corrects a puppy is fine. But don’t allow the puppy to harass the adult. And don’t let the older canine get too rough with the youngster.
    • Introduce toys and other goodies over time. As long as your older dog doesn’t guard resources, start to give them new toys. Place a few toys on the ground and have separate handlers play with each pup at opposite ends of the room. Then switch handlers and toys.
    • Get professional help if necessary. If at any time your older dog is aggressive to the puppy or doesn’t seem to be progressing in his acceptance of the newcomer, get professional help from a positive reinforcement trainer or behaviorist.

    Getting a new puppy is a great experience. You picture your adult dog and pup being best friends and playing together, tugging toys and curling up together.     Steps to take before bringing puppy home

    Prior to your new puppy’s arrival, follow these steps.

    1. Decide where he will reside in your home

    Lime-washed walls meet aluminium display fixtures in this minimalist studio and showroom that designer Hollie Bowden has devised for London brand Completedworks.

    Set over two floors of a former pub in Marylebone, it provides space for Completedworks to design and display its jewellery and ceramics, as well as to host an array of craft-focused classes.

    The brand was established in 2013 and up until now, has largely been sold via high-end department stores such as Dover Street Market and Liberty. But founder Anna Jewsbury felt it was time for Completedworks to have its own brick-and-mortar space.

    “We increasingly had clients asking to come and see our pieces in person but felt that we didn’t have a space that felt considered and reflected our vision,” she said. “We wanted people to be able to enter our world and get to know us, and for us to get to know them.”

    For the design of the showroom, Jewsbury worked with London-based designer Hollie Bowden, who naturally looked to the brand’s jewellery for inspiration.

    This can be seen for example in the hammered-metal door handles that appear throughout the studio and directly reference the creased design of the gold Cohesion earrings.

    “[Completedworks] is known for the beauty of the textural surfaces and flowing almost baroque forms,” Bowden explained. “We developed a display language that played off that, with minimal details and strict lines.”

    Almost every surface throughout the studio is washed in beige-toned lime paint, with only a few slivers of the original brick walls and a worn metal column left exposed near the central staircase.

    Bowden used brushed aluminium to create a range of display fixtures, including chunky plinths and super-slender shelving units supported by floor-to-ceiling poles.

    The space also houses a couple of angular aluminium counters for packing orders that include discrete storage for boxes and subtle openings, through which tissue paper or bubble wrap can be pulled.

    A slightly more playful selection of colours and materials was used for the studio’s custom furnishings.

    In the main showroom, there’s a modular display island sheathed in lilac linen. Meanwhile in the office, designer Byron Pritchard – who is also Bowden’s partner – created a gridded wooden cabinet inlaid with translucent sheets of paper, intended to resemble a traditional Japanese shoji screen.

    • The Conference Board’s Leading Economic Index declined further in March, suggesting a recession will hit in mid-2023. 
    • The LEI is down 4.5% over the last six months, a steeper decline than the 3.5% rate in the preceding six months.
    • The key indicator has declined for 12 consecutive months.

    The Conference Board’s Leading Economic Index for the US dropped for the 12th consecutive month in March, signaling that a recession is set to hit in the middle of 2023. 

    The indicator — which broadly tracks business cycles using 10 inputs from across manufacturing, unemployment, building permits, and interest rate spreads, among other factors — slipped 1.2% in March to. 108.4, following a decline of 0.5% in February.

    In the six-month span leading up to March, it fell 4.5%, a steeper drop than the 3.5% contraction from the preceding six-month stretch.

    “The Conference Board forecasts that economic weakness will intensify and spread more widely throughout the US economy over the coming months, leading to a recession starting in mid-2023,” Justyna Zabinska-La Monica, senior manager, business cycle indicators, at the Conference Board, said last week.

    The Leading Economic Index has seen its sharpest reversal on record outside of a recession dating back to the 1950s, Wells Fargo economists said in a recent note, and presents a “clear message” that a downturn remains ahead.

    To be sure, the data illustrated that manufacturer’s new orders for consumer goods and materials, as well as stock prices, have been positive contributions over the last six months.

    All other indicators pointed lower, however, with negative contributions flashing across non-financial as well as financial components, like credit and Treasury rates. 

    Recent bank turmoil that started with Silicon Valley Bank added pressure to the financial and credit systems, while the labor market’s strength has started to lose some momentum over the last month.  

    At the same time, the New York Fed’s Recession Probabilities Model suggests the odds of a downturn are at their highest since 1982. The model’s April reading shows a 57.7% chance of a recession

    Palak Shah is not your typical CEO of a typical Banarasi brand. And the secret to her success lies as much in asking the right questions as it does in the answers. “How would Kim Kardashian wear a sari?” she had once asked her long-time collaborator Nikhil Dudani of Feat. Artists. It was while conceptualising Ekaya Banaras’ campaign for their latest collection of saris and lehengas, Ambush, a modern interpretation of the Banarasi handloom speciality Shikargah, which is identified by its hunting scenes and wildlife-inspired motifs. Nothing about the campaign is conventional. Rather than in a jungle or the outdoors, the scene is set in sleek marble interiors, keeping this influential entrepreneur and her sex appeal in mind. Flash photography highlights ensembles featuring a zebra-striped peekaboo blouse with criss-crossing strappy accents in one instance and hot pink tights that are paired with a body-shaping slit sari in the same colour, in another. Presenting such novel pairings is exactly what exemplifies the kind of work Shah and Dudani intend to create each time they work together.

    Whether it is offering Banarasi brocade in Western silhouettes like pantsuits and thigh-high slit skirts, or anticipating a demand for selling luxury woven fabric by the metre under the concept of Thaan, Shah has led the cultural dialogue of how traditional textiles can be featured in contemporary wardrobes, for over a decade now, building on her family’s 120-year-old legacy of working with Banarasi crafts.

    Her Instagram page serves as, one could argue, one of the brand’s best endorsements. Shah’s love for saris is evident as she posts selfies wearing different drapes with equal ease at weddings, vacations and in her home. “You have to present the product in a way that allows consumers to view the full breadth of mood, occasion and styling it can cater to,” she tells us. With each scenario, she makes the case for wearing Indian textiles anywhere, in a multitude of ways. She isn’t afraid to make bold statements, be it with her unconventional blouse pairings or personal observations. “Thaan Pink > Valentino Pink?” she asks in one caption.

    Shah’s innovative briefs have attracted lasting partnerships with like-minded creatives like Dudani, who are challenged by the opportunity to reimagine Banarasi textiles. For Dudani, creating extensively researched looks and unique drapes with Ekaya’s handwoven brocades over the years is akin to “creating sculptures”. Certainly, these experiments have led to memorable campaigns that have presented the sari in surprising sites — like the cricket pitch, as was the case with Ekaya’s collection of saris designed in collaboration with Masaba Gupta in 2019 — and styles, like the hood drape that he created for Ekaya’s Sakura campaign.

    Admittedly, Dudani’s favourite campaign was for the brand’s first ready-to-wear line, Kashi in the Clouds. “For that shoot in 2020, my energy was focused into making it as different and memorable as possible.”

    On a foggy morning in Varanasi, two short-haired women were seen striking a relaxed pose in front of peeling walls, rusty bridges and painted brick towers. They were wearing impeccably tailored Banarasi brocade trousers, paired with casual black tank tops. In another instance, they wore handwoven snakeskin-inspired jackets that were styled with baggy denims straight out of the ’80s. That night, they adorned their faces with pink and green paint while sitting astride a Royal Enfield. One was wearing a bright pink Banarasi brocade pantsuit while the other sported a two-piece set, consisting of an oversized blue jacket and shorts. From the casting to the hair and make-up, the result was a paradigm shift from how Banarasi textiles are usually shot, especially in Varanasi, where a mystical presentation of the town’s renowned ghats and sacred riverbank often takes centre stage.

    As a result of their relentless experimentation, Shah and Dudani have come to be known as a formidable duo over the years. Verve asks them to reflect on the various factors that have fuelled their journey….

    Excerpts from the conversation….

    What are the qualities you look for in a collaborator, and what do you think you bring to a creative collaboration?
    Palak Shah (PS): I have always believed in collaborating, for my brand and as a person. Whenever I have collaborated with Nikhil, he has brought in a fresh perspective that has opened my mind to new ways of seeing things and looking at my brand. It’s a way for me to unlearn, learn and grow. He is also a person who I greatly trust, which is why we’ve been working together for so many years.

    Nikhil Dudani (ND): We had first discussed working together when she had just started [out]. Then in 2017, Palak mentioned that she was looking to shoot her first campaign for Thaan and she asked me to pitch an idea. The kind of freedom that I was given to make that mood board come to life drove me to keep working with her.

    There was growth in terms of my own work as well. Someday, we could create a photo book from the work that we have done together and it would have a distinct language. Palak gave me the space to keep coming back and continue developing the narrative from where we had left off.

    Nikhil, what was the brief like? Were you familiar with their work?
    ND: I was aware of what the brand was doing and that they [Palak’s family] had been working with Banarasi textiles for a long time. I was clued in to how Palak saw the brand growing. She had made it clear that she wanted Ekaya’s Banarasi saris to look very different from how these saris are portrayed by other brands. That got me excited to work with them. I thought to myself, “I can think of a million things to do with this brief.” A chance like this doesn’t come by often.

    And, Palak, where else did you want the focus to be — apart from showing Banarasi textiles in a new way?
    PS: I’m an accidental entrepreneur. I’m not from the fashion field. I had studied business management and had intended to get into accounting and finance. So, for
    me, the whole idea was to get someone who is an expert at what they do, and Nikhil, in my view, is more than a stylist. He is a mentor. I can bounce ideas off him. There’s never been a situation where I haven’t gotten any input from him. It’s more of a discussion. Over the years, we’ve understood each other’s pulse and discovered what will work and what won’t. I always wanted to create something that is out of the box and breaks stereotypes, but not so conceptual and arty that only we would understand it.

    Nikhil is the perfect blend between a businessman and an artist — what my father and I wanted, respectively.

    ND: We always review each campaign once it is out. When I find that a campaign isn’t producing the desired numbers in terms of sales because it is too far out, we have a discussion on how we can tweak it the next time. So, we aren’t using the same formula every time. We’re constantly evolving and taking feedback from the customer.

    PS: When I started out I was just 21 and we went with the typical formulas: pretty models in “properly” draped saris. Over the years, I started breaking away. Nikhil has helped with that.

    For our first collaboration, Thaan, I had said, “Let’s create a buzz and do something really crazy.” And that made headlines like nothing else did. We shot a beautiful campaign together called Mehfooz, in Lucknow, in 2018. That campaign stood out, but it wasn’t due to oddly draped saris or peculiarly shaped blouses. It wasn’t too fashion-forward but proved to be a turning point, a soft transition into that arena. Nikhil and I have tested the waters as we’ve gone on. And we have talked about creating something different each time.

    Are you present at every shoot?
    PS: Yes. I was present at the Feat. Artists shoot for the Pixels campaign in Assam in February although I was getting married that month. I have learnt so much from our shoots — be it the Masaba campaign or our Ambush shoot. I have specifically learnt a lot from Nikhil — by observing the way he’s styling, how he is thinking. At most, I tell him if it is working or not.

    Nikhil, you have been very experimental when it comes to draping. I remember the Sakura campaign, where it felt very new.
    ND: I am a keen observer so I do keep tucking away ideas in the back of my mind until someone is ready to use them. Palak is very open to new concepts. Sometimes, they don’t work out and I spontaneously take a different route. With Ekaya, I often look at what we have done in the past and try to update it. From the beginning, I’ve kind of liked “messing” with saris in some sense. It will still look like a sari but it isn’t how we’re usually expected to wear or pleat it. To be given the leeway to display it in an unusual way is key, and it works most of the time. Very rarely will you see two saris draped similarly in two different Ekaya campaigns. For Sakura, which had a very minimal look, I researched Japanese drapes. We decided that they wouldn’t hug the body too much and this formed the crux of the campaign.

    PS: But with Ambush, we wanted a more fitted look.

    Let’s discuss that campaign. What I found interesting is that the textiles have motifs of hunting and wildlife but none of that is in the imagery.
    PS: I sent Nikhil a picture of Kim Kardashian in her bathroom in these thigh-high boots, looking absolutely stylish, and I told him that I wanted my saris to be positioned like that — I wanted them to look as sexy and sensual as she did. Then came the slit sari, the jacket and the glasses, and the shoot became more about the vision and aesthetic that we wanted to portray than the motifs on the products.

    ND: When I’m given jungle motifs, the last thing that I would do is place it against the backdrop of a jungle. Since we were looking at Kim as the starting point, I was keener to visualise a space that she would probably inhabit. Marble, stone and grey walls came to mind — I could see her in a minimal space like that.

    We made use of rings to drape the saris and this gave them a more fitted look and showed more skin. The blouses had deeper necklines with a lot of tie-ups, and they exactly matched the saris. This is a woman who would wear a head-to-toe print…. Everything was inspired by Kim Kardashian, even in terms of hair and make-up. We cast girls who are perceived as sexy. The research was also about understanding the new-age influencer, a woman who is being photographed wherever she goes, all the time. She doesn’t feel the need to wear a suit at a press conference or a meeting; she can pull off a sari wrapped in a way that doesn’t feel fussy.

    Tell us about the Masaba x Ekaya campaign, which got rave reviews.
    ND: Masaba was very involved in the process. She had many creative discussions with photographer Bikramjit Bose. They wanted to incorporate movement and depict the sari as functional. They wanted action. At that point, I remembered Masaba’s direct connection with cricket. I was worried it would be too obvious to pitch this, but I did it because I’d never seen an Indian sari campaign showing women playing cricket. So, we built the whole narrative around that.

    Shooting it was really fun. The girls had to learn how to play cricket. We intended to cast girls who knew how to play the game, but we didn’t find many models who knew how to. We did find one who could bowl so those shots were quite convincing. And, of course, we made them wear sneakers so that they were comfortable running around.

    How do the weavers react to the campaign imagery? What kind of feedback do you get from them?
    PS: The weavers may not have a very positive reaction to every campaign because the campaigns are so unconventional. Even in terms of creating different products, many are hesitant at first. They say,“Yeh chal payega ya nahi chal payega? Yeh kya bana rahe hain?” [Will this work or not? What are we making?] Once, Nikhil and I were trying to see if we could use the back of a weave. My father was working with the weavers, who were quite unconvinced. But, luckily, my father is open to experimentation. The weavers don’t always understand our vision, but there are certain campaigns that they love.

    How would you describe your role?
    PS: My role is to motivate the various team members at all points, and give them access. Also, to always reiterate that we have to bring something new to the table. The goal of the brand is to not cater only to one audience segment.

    Has there ever been any negative response to the campaigns?
    PS: I’ve never faced any backlash as such. But a part of the audience found the videos for The Crossing — Natives of Nowhere campaign (2019) unnerving. But again, I think that it was way ahead of its time.

    Nikhil, in what direction would you like to see the brand grow?
    ND: It’s important that I introduce Palak to individuals whose work is right for her brand. I have facilitated meetings between Palak and stylists who work at my talent agency, and I like what they have conceptualised for her. It fits into the bigger story that we have created and when we make that photo book, I would be happy to see their work in there.

    Ekaya is ahead of its time and will be remembered for that. When you look at Instagram, the imagery is very similar when it comes to brands that are dressing women in saris. When we shot for the Kashi in the Clouds collection in Varanasi, it was photographer Rid Burman’s idea to shoot girls who wore their hair short and looked boyish. That was very new for a Banarasi brand. In a sense, they look like two boys walking on the ghats, and that, to me, was pushing the envelope for a commercial brand selling ready-to-wear to women; their clients were not expecting to see something like that. It looked like the kind of imagery I would want to see if I were going to a brand to shop. It wasn’t just the images that spoke to me but also the individuals in the images; they reflect a certain lifestyle that I associate with and relate to. So, these are the kind of campaigns that I would like to continue to be part of.

    PS: I love that campaign. It’s one of my favourites.

    ND: We did push boundaries a lot with that one. The drapes and the headgear were inspired by tribal women. It was a strong campaign, and actually that’s when the talk of the book started.

    Where can I find rare dog breeders?

    The American Kennel Club maintains a directory of breed clubs around the country. These breed clubs have volunteers who will answer questions you might have about these dogs and where you can find reputable breeders. The AKC directory of upcoming events is a great resource to locate dog shows in your area and meet handlers and breeders, and meet the rare breed in person.

    Why should I get a rare dog breed?

    When looking to add a dog to your family, research different breeds of dogs, their size, temperament and what they were originally bred to do. Don’t limit your research to breeds you have met before, or that you see in your neighborhood. Just because a dog is common, it doesn’t mean he will necessarily be a good match for your home and lifestyle.

    One of the benefits of having a rare breed can be the chance to find a dog who will be the ideal fit for your family.

    You are also playing a part in preserving the history and legacy of that breed. Rare breeds are at risk of disappearing if people don’t continue preserving them. Another benefit of sharing your life with a rare breed is that people involved with rare breeds tend to be extremely passionate about their breeds and are excited to connect and meet-up with other people involved in their breed. This can give you a built-in community of friends and support when you bring a rare dog home.
