Revamp Your Kitchen Cabinets for Function and Flow

    [ad_1]

We spend a lot of time promoting the idea of cabinet refacing because it allows our clients to transform their kitchen while saving them tons of money and keeping landfills clear of unnecessary waste. However, it’s also important to note that we can completely overhaul the interior of your cabinets while refacing them. So, if you want to bring your kitchen cabinetry to a whole new level, make sure you turn to expert cabinet remodel contractors in Northampton County for help.

    Interior of Refaced Kitchen Cabinets

The ultimate kitchen design prioritizes function and flow. The same holds true for cabinet design, including the interiors. Empty cabinet space is a wasted storage opportunity. Tap into your intuitive knowledge of “what goes where” – and “what happens where” – to design custom cabinet interiors that keep everything in easy, accessible, and organized reach.

Also, the more we optimize cabinet and drawer interiors, the easier it is to remove a cabinet here or swap it out for a shelf there, opening up the kitchen space. Here are things to keep in mind along the way.

  • Elon Musk Is Empowering Right-Wing Extremists on Twitter: Researcher

Elon Musk Is Empowering Right-Wing Extremists on Twitter: Researcher

    [ad_1]

    • Elon Musk has been weighing in more and more on political issues since buying Twitter.
    • Once positioning himself as neutral, he now shares anti-Democratic conspiracies and endorses the GOP.
    • “Any argument that he’s trying to empower the center is patently bullshit,” a researcher on extremism told Insider.

Though he has long touted himself as “somewhere in the middle” on politics, Elon Musk has been sharing increasingly more conservative political views on Twitter since he first showed interest in purchasing the platform, and is now regularly amplifying anti-Democratic conspiracy theories while endorsing Republican candidates across the country.

“In the past I voted Democrat, because they were (mostly) the kindness party,” Musk wrote in a tweet this May. He then bashed the Democratic Party, adding: “But they have become the party of division & hate, so I can no longer support them and will vote Republican.”

In November, he called on “independent-minded voters” to vote Republican to curb a Democratic majority. While such an endorsement may seem commonplace in today’s political landscape, critics warn Musk’s widespread influence and increasingly conspiratorial posts appear to be favoring far-right extremism.

“I think he’s intentionally empowering right-wing extremists,” J.M. Berger, a researcher on extremism on social media like Twitter, told Insider. “Any argument that he’s trying to empower the center is patently bullshit and should be treated as such.”

    Far-right conspiracy theories

Berger — who has written several books about extremist movements and is a fellow with VOX-Pol, a research network focused on violent online political extremism — told Insider it has become more difficult to talk about extremism without discussing mainstream politics, as views shared by Republican candidates have “increasingly overlapped with kind of extremist points of view,” such as a Florida GOP candidate who was banned from social media after he said he would legalize shooting federal agents on sight and another who said federal agents would leave his home “in a body bag” if they attempted to execute a search warrant, as they did at Mar-a-Lago.

“So if we’re talking about empowering centrist voices…if you look at polling and you look at people’s attitudes, a centrist platform would not empower anti-LGBTQ+ activism and violence, because most people support equal rights for LGBTQ+ people,” Berger said.

Musk recently amplified a debunked rumor that Nancy Pelosi’s husband, Paul, was attacked by a lover in a sexual tryst gone wrong, sharing a link to an article that claimed Pelosi and his attacker met at a gay bar, and saying there “might be more to this story than meets the eye.”

The 82-year-old husband of the Speaker of the House was beaten with a hammer in a “politically motivated” attack, according to the San Francisco District Attorney.

“What we’ve seen since he did this takeover is that he started off positioning himself as super neutral and he’s sort of explicitly saying he’s politically neutral,” Berger said. “And then there are two things that we’ve seen since then: First is in his interactions on Twitter, he is increasingly palling around with, and apparently paying heed to some of the worst people on the far right.”

Lately, Musk’s Twitter mentions and replies include promising users like the infamous right-wing account Libs of TikTok — which is known for promoting anti-LGBTQ conspiracy theories — that Twitter will be “much better” than it was prior to his ownership, accusing The New York Times of going “full woke,” and replying to MAGA activist Charlie Kirk’s musings about Anthony Fauci’s daughter working at Twitter with a quip that it’s a “small world…

    ‘Skewed’ content moderation

In addition to Musk’s ongoing interactions with popular alt-right figures, Berger and other experts are concerned that Twitter’s current take on content moderation is encouraging extremism and hate speech on the platform.

“The way that Twitter’s content moderation has changed since he’s taken over has definitely skewed towards favoring the far-right,” Berger said.

Since his acquisition, Musk has reinstated the accounts of Kanye West, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Andrew Tate, and the Babylon Bee — each of which was banned for posting antisemitic, misogynistic, or transphobic content in violation of Twitter’s policies. Musk also reinstated the account of Donald Trump after the former president was banned for inciting violence on January 6.

Berger, who began tracking some of the English-speaking reinstated accounts that appeared on the site, said that the bulk of accounts were “abusers and harassers and trolls” empowered by the lack of robust content moderation to mobilize harassment against users. In some cases, he said, this could escalate towards violence.

The Center for Countering Digital Hate found, in the week immediately following Musk’s takeover, that use of the N-word tripled the 2022 average, anti-LGBTQ slurs were up between 39% and 53%, and antisemitic slurs rose 22%. The New York Times reported antisemitic posts referring to Jews or Judaism soared more than 61 percent in the first two weeks while accounts supporting ISIS came roaring back.

“So whatever [Musk’s] beliefs were in the beginning, or whether there has been an evolution or whether it’s something that was there all along, his tenure at Twitter has been marked by a huge increase in both the presence of far-right accounts on the platform and also in how he personally elevates some of these accounts by seeming to take them seriously and engaging with them on questions of policy,” Berger said.

The billionaire owner of Twitter has also recently suggested the now-collapsed crypto exchange FTX was used for laundering billions of dollars to the Democratic party

“You can kind of see — when you start looking at the stuff over time — you see some public figures who will sort of start dabbling in far-right stuff and then become increasingly oriented in that direction,” Berger said. “And it’s sort of hard to know whether it’s something they were always into, or whether they [are] making a transition in these attitudes that they have.”

Musk and the ‘mythology of the center’

In 2014, Musk described his political views as “half Democrat, half Republican” in an interview with The Atlantic reporter James Fallows, saying “I’m somewhere in the middle, socially liberal and fiscally conservative.” Though he didn’t regularly weigh in on politics prior to this year, Musk said in May that he voted for Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden in recent elections — but “unprovoked attacks” against him “by leading Democrats” have caused him to switch parties.

Musk’s posts on Twitter appeared to shift to be explicitly political in February, when he shared (and then deleted) a meme comparing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to Hitler after a COVID-19 vaccine mandate was implemented among truck drivers. Since then, he has more frequently posted tweets amplifying right-wing accounts and viewpoints.

“So, there’s a ‘mythology of the center’ that the far-right advances and that is the mythological center that Elon Musk is interested in promoting,” Berger said. “The idea is that most Americans, or typical Americans, are right-wing, family-values, red state kind of voters — and that’s evidently not true.”

While Congress is increasingly divided between extreme stances, Insider has found Americans are more united on common issues than the divide would suggest.

Insider’s 2017 analysis of partisanship in the country found 71% of Americans believe climate change is real including a group of Trump-supporting Texans. 92% of Americans agree the government should be able to negotiate with drug companies and 86% of Americans want more infrastructure spending. Insider has also reported four out of five people support having more LGBT members of Congress.

“But by creating that mythology,” Berger said. “What they succeed in doing is tilting the entire conversation to the right and then making space for further and further kinds of right far-right views that verge into open extremism.”

Musk and representatives for Twitter did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.

  • Insulin For Dogs – Dogster

    Insulin For Dogs – Dogster

    [ad_1]

If your dog needs insulin, he or she most likely has Type 1 diabetes. Managing a diabetic dog comes with a steep learning curve that includes monitoring their blood sugar and giving them life-saving insulin. In almost all cases, once your dog needs insulin, he requires it every day for life. This can feel overwhelming for many dog parents.

With the right knowledge, a little practice and a good veterinarian, you can manage your dog’s diabetes like a pro! Your veterinarian may recommend changes to diet, exercise and environment, but insulin is critical for diabetic dogs. Feeling confident with insulin — including how and when to give it — as well as what type of insulin you may use, is the first place to start.

Why does your dog need insulin and how does it work?

Insulin is a hormone produced by your dog’s pancreas. This hormone helps regulate the glucose in the bloodstream. Without insulin, the sugar in your dog’s blood builds up to a dangerously high level. This can result in life-threatening electrolyte imbalances and one very sick dog.

Dogs that are diabetic usually suffer from Type 1 diabetes. This means that the cells in their pancreas that make insulin have stopped working. Type 1 diabetes can be caused by many factors, including:

    • chronic pancreatitis
    • some autoimmune disorders
    • obesity
    • Cushing disease

Unfortunately, Type 1 diabetes in dogs cannot be healed and how to treat it requires daily insulin for life.

How do I get started with insulin for my dog?

how to give a dog insulin
Giving your dog insulin is not too difficult as the needles are very small and the insulin is injected right under the dog’s skin. The most labor-intensive time in your dog’s journey with diabetes is in the beginning. Your dog may be recovering from a recent crisis of high blood sugar, and determining your dog’s ideal insulin type and dose requires a period of trial and error.

Here are the steps to follow to get your dog’s blood sugar properly regulated.

    1. Learn to give insulin to your dog. Your veterinarian will send you home with a bottle of insulin and special insulin syringes to give the insulin. Insulin needles are very small and the insulin is injected right under the dog’s skin. Use the area between your dog’s shoulder blades to give these injections. Pick up the skin to create a tent. Place the needle into your dog by pushing through the tented area of skin. Push the syringe’s plunger to inject the insulin. This might feel scary at first. With a little practice, and once you realize the needles are quite small and are rarely uncomfortable for your pup, administering injections feels much easier.
    2. Check your dog’s blood glucose. You may be asked to bring your dog in for blood glucose checks, or you may be sent home with a blood glucose monitor. The ability to check your dog’s blood glucose levels at home with a monitor like the Alphatrak will save you money and visits to the veterinary hospital.

In the beginning, your veterinarian may need to perform a blood glucose curve that requires blood glucose values every two hours. This gives your veterinarian information about your dog’s blood glucose throughout the day and in relation to insulin administration. This can be done in a clinic or at home. The advantages of performing these curves at home include a more comfortable day for your dog and a more accurate reading, as stress caused by a veterinary visit can change blood glucose levels.

    1. Learn when to give insulin to your dog. Most insulin types need to be given every 12 hours and are often timed with breakfast and dinner. Insulin should only be given if your dog has eaten their meal first. If your dog wakes up and decides not to eat, that dose of insulin should be skipped. You can also use your at-home blood glucose monitor to decide if it’s appropriate to give your dog’s next dose of insulin. If the glucose values are already normal or low, consider skipping this dose. When in doubt, give your veterinarian a call for further instruction.
    2. Keep a dog health journal. This is useful for all parties involved in caring for your dog. Here are the important data points to keep track of during the initial management of your dog’s diabetes.
      1. Weight. Checking this weekly or every other week can be helpful. This can be done at your veterinarian’s office or using a home scale or baby scale if your dog is small enough.
      2. Appetite. Recording your dog’s appetite can be helpful information for your veterinarian. This only needs to be done in the initial stages of managing your dog’s blood sugar.
      3. Thirst/Urination. Increased blood sugar causes your dog to drink and urinate more than usual. When your pup returns to normal drinking and urinating habits, their blood sugar is most likely becoming more regulated.
      4. Blood glucose. If you are monitoring your dog’s blood glucose at home, write it down with the time and date.
      5. Insulin and food administration. Record when and how much insulin you are giving your dog. Keeping track of your dog’s eating habits, including snacks, is also important.

    Types of insulin and syringes

    insulin for dogs

Several types of insulin can be used for your dog, and your veterinarian may start with one type and move to another. These vary in cost and in duration of action. They also have different syringe types that they are compatible with.

Insulin syringes are either U-100 or U-40. The U-100 syringes are compatible with insulin that has 100 units per milliliter of insulin. The U-40 syringes are compatible with insulin that has 40 units per milliliter of insulin. Mixing up the syringes could cause your dog to get too little or too much insulin.

Below are common insulins used in dogs and their associated syringe types:

    1. Vetsulin. This is compatible with U-40 needles and needs to be given once to twice daily depending on the dog. However, this brand of insulin usually comes in a dosing pen that is easy to use. Be sure to hold the pen under the skin during administration for 5 to 7 seconds to ensure all the insulin is dispensed.
    2. ProZinc (PZI). This is also compatible with U-40 needles and requires twice daily dosing.
    3. Lantus (glargine). This long-acting insulin is compatible with U-100 needles and is given twice daily.
    4. Humulin N (NPH). This insulin is a common choice and is compatible with U-100 needles.

Ultimately the type of insulin you settle with will depend on your veterinarian’s preference, what is available, cost and how your dog responds.

Dangerous side effects of insulin in dogs

The most dangerous effect of insulin is low blood sugar. When your dog is given insulin, their cells are more able to utilize the body’s glucose. If levels of sugar in the blood become too low, your dog gets sick and could die if not treated. If your dog skips a meal, do not give him or her their insulin dose.

Always properly mix insulin before administration. Symptoms of low blood sugar include:

    • seizures
    • lethargy
    • trembling
    • fainting
    • vomiting

If you suspect your dog has low blood sugar, give corn syrup (ask your vet about how much to give) and seek emergency veterinary care.

Managing Type 1 diabetes may feel intimidating at first. You and your pup will soon be in a rhythm with a new confidence in your daily routine. Surround yourself with a support team that includes a veterinarian you like and trust, pet sitters or a neighbor who can help give your dog’s insulin if you are gone and an online community of other dog parents that are also caring for a diabetic dog. You are your dog’s best medical advocate, and your furry friend is so lucky to have your love and support.

  • How to Find the Best One

How to Find the Best One

    [ad_1]

A drainboard sink is one of the most practical of kitchen innovations. Long a fixture of vintage kitchens, a kitchen sink with drainboard is also a popular industrial kitchen feature as it is ideal for busy spaces that need a pragmatic sink option.

    What is a Drainboard Sink?

    What is a Drainboard Sink
    Tamara Jane Kitchens

A drainboard sink is one with the drainboard integrated into either one or both sides of the sink. A drainboard is an area beside the basin that is sloped with ridges to allow the dishes to sit off the surface and dry easier than on a flat surface.

Kitchen sinks with drainboards have various configurations. These include single and double basins as well as single or double drainboards. They are crafted from different materials, though most modern drainboard sinks use stainless steel. You can also install them various ways including drop-in and undermount styles as well. Some have apron fronts such as farmhouse drainboard sinks while others are more sleek and spare in form.

We want to help make choosing the best sink easier because there are so many options for these sinks. Consider all of the factors before deciding if a drainboard sink will work for your home.

    Materials for Drainboard Sinks

    Materials for Drainboard Sinks
    Hofmann Design Build, Inc.

Each material used for a drainboard kitchen sink has qualities that give it a different look, durability, and price point.

    Stainless Steel

A stainless steel sink with drainboard is the most popular type of drainboard sink. Stainless steel is a durable material that is also easy to maintain.

It has natural antibacterial qualities and is resistant to scratches. Plus, it is one of the most affordable options for sinks with drainboards. You can find a stainless sink with drainboard options both double and single.

    Cast Iron

Cast iron drainboard sinks have a vintage but timeless charm that work well in traditional and classic kitchen styles. Most vintage drainboard sinks are made from cast iron as well as vintage drainboard sink replicas. A cast iron sink with drainboard is durable, scratch and stain resistant. It retains heat well which makes washing dishes more pleasant and efficient if you are washing many dishes at a time.

On the other hand, a cast iron drainboard kitchen sink is one of the heaviest options available and may not work for cabinets without structural support. They are also a more expensive drainboard sink option.

    Copper

Copper kitchen sinks with drainboard areas are not a common choice, but there are options out there for those wanting to add a distinctive look in their kitchen. Copper is durable, strong, beautiful and recyclable. It also has antibacterial properties like stainless steel that make it an ideal sink material.

Copper sinks are prone to scratches and smooth finishes may get dinged. Choose the best quality copper drainboard sink in order to ensure that it lasts over time.

    Fireclay

Fireclay sinks are made from a combination of clay and glaze that are fired at a very high temperature. This produces one of the most durable materials for drainboard sinks available. Fireclay drainboard sinks are non-porous, scratch resistant, and resistant to chips and dings. Fireclay is an easy maintenance material that you can keep clean with a quick wipe down each day.

Fireclay drainboard sinks have a similar look to cast iron drainboard sinks but are a more reasonable price. Many fireclay sinks have a farmhouse drainboard sink style, though in general, there is not the same variety that exists for other materials like stainless steel.

    Granite Composite

Granite composite sinks consist of a material that includes granite mixed with crushed quartz, stone dust, and acrylic resin. It is a durable and strong material that is common for brown and black drainboard sinks. It is heat and scratch resistant. Though granite composite sinks are lighter than full granite sinks, they will still require some extra structural support.

    Acrylic

Cast acrylic is a common alternative to cast iron or fireclay sinks. Acrylic drainboard sinks have a similar look to cast iron but it is lighter and less expensive. These sinks come in a wide range of colors and also different finish options including gloss and matte. Acrylic drainboard sinks are not as scratch or heat resistant as stronger materials. Heat damage may cause the sinks to discolor or warp the finish.

    Mounting Options

    Sink Mounting Options
    reDesign home

The most common mounting options for drainboard sinks are drop-in sink or an undermount sink.

    • Drop-in Sink – A drop-in sink is also called a top mount sink, over mount sink, or self-rimming sink. It has a rim around the edge that curves over the countertop. You can drop this sink into a pre-cut hole in the countertop. The edge of the countertop supports the sink which works well for heavy drainboard sinks made of fireclay and cast iron. This style is not as sleek as undermounting and also creates a rim that makes it hard to brush crumbs into the sink. It also creates an edge that traps crumbs between the sink and counter.
    • Undermount Sink – Undermounted sinks are a modern style that has gained popularity over time. These consist of sinks that are mounted below the counter edge. This creates a sleek style that doesn’t require any extra counter space for the rim. Most drainboard sinks are drop-in varieties because of the water that can collect on the drainboard. This style is not as good for heavy sink varieties like cast iron and fireclay.

    Size

You can find drainboard sinks ranging in many sizes. These sinks tend to be larger than other small sink varieties because of the drainboard extension. Some of the smallest sizes were 24- 27 inches long (side to side) and 18 inches wide (front to back). Medium drainboard sink sizes range from 30-40 inches long and 18-20 inches wide. Large drainboard sinks which often feature two basins with two drainboards can range from 45-70+ inches long and 20- 24.5 inches wide.

    Drainboard Sink Pros and Cons

Drainboard sinks are a practical and beautiful sink option for many kitchen designs. Yet, they do have drawbacks that you should consider before you purchase one for your space.

    Pros

    • More Space for Dishes – Drainboards with one or two drainboards allow plenty of extra room to do the dishes and allow them to dry without crowding up your counter space.
    • Energy Savings – Allowing dishes to air dry rather than using an automatic dishwasher allows you to save energy costs.
    • Fragile Items – Hand washing items like crystal glasses is better for them than using an automatic dishwasher and having plenty of space to allow them to dry keeps them safer.
    • Place for Hot Dishes – The drainboard will allow you an extra place to set hot dishes and pots if you opt for a heat resistant drainboard sink. Use granite composite, fireclay, or stainless steel if you want the most heat resistant option.

    Cons

    • Counter Space – Drainboard sinks tend to take up more space than conventional sinks. This may not be the best option if counter space is a premium in your kitchen.
    • Maintenance – Most sinks with drainboards feature ridges and valleys. These can collect debris and dirt over time that you must wipe down to keep clean.
    • Cost – Drainboard sinks are not as common as standard sinks. Therefore, these will be more expensive because they are a custom style.

Here Are the Items Being Auctioned Off From Twitter HQ

    [ad_1]

    • Twitter will be getting rid of hundreds of surplus office supplies in a January auction.
    • The items being auctioned off include kitchen appliances, Twitter sculptures, and office chairs.
    • The lowest starting bids are $25 while the highest is $50.

Twitter fans may soon have an opportunity to own memorabilia and supplies from the social media company’s San Francisco office.

The company is cleaning out perhaps some of its most — and least — interesting items in an auction next year.

Bidding begins on January 17, 2023, at 7 a.m. Pacific Time and ends on January 18 at 10 a.m., according to the website BidSpotter, which is listing the items that will be auctioned off by Heritage Global Partners.

The auction comes at a time when Twitter CEO Elon Musk is reducing expenses after purchasing the social media platform for $44 billion. Musk has cut everything from infrastructure budgets, employee perks like at-home Wi-Fi and travel allowances, and holiday pay for contractors.

However, in an interview with Fortune, Nick Dove, a representative at HGP, said the auction did not relate to the finances of the company, and that anyone who thought so was a “moron.”

“They’ve sold for 44 billion, and we’re selling a couple of chairs and desks and computers,” Dove told Fortune. “So if anyone genuinely thinks that the revenue from selling a couple computers and chairs will pay for the mountain there, then they’re a moron.”

Some unique memorabilia featured include bikes that can charge your phone, a 3-ft Twitter Bird statue, and a 6-foot “@” sign with artificial plants that can be replaced with real plants.

The auction items also include tons of industrial kitchen equipment, including refrigerators and pizza ovens, dozens of display screens, iMac monitors, and gray swivel office chairs.

Bidding begins between $25 and $50 on all items.

Ever since Musk purchased Twitter, the company and its headquarters have undergone some serious changes, including the firing of thousands of employees, the elimination of the company’s free lunch program, and a push towards a “hardcore” work culture.

Musk also began renovating some of the rooms at Twitter HQ into bedrooms and recently told employees that they should start exclusively working at Twitter’s San Francisco office.

A representative for Twitter did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.

  • What to Do When Your Dog Won’t Eat – Dogster

What to Do When Your Dog Won’t Eat – Dogster

    [ad_1]

Many of us have challenging relationships with food – why can’t we crave carrots instead of chocolate when we are stressed?! Dogs aren’t immune to this, though they aren’t likely to dive into a pint of ice cream after a bad breakup or getting let go from a job. Instead, they may stop eating entirely. Thankfully, we have some experts to weigh in on issues revolving a new lack of interest in food.

Christine Caplan, a certified veterinary technician with AKC Pet Insurance, based in Portland, Oregon, says there are five main factors that may cause dogs to not eat:

    • Medical conditions – Your vet will help you with a treatment plan to ensure your dog eats following a health issue, and sometimes an appetite stimulant is necessary.
    • Surgery – It may take many days before your dog’s appetite returns to normal.
    • Medications – Many medications can cause inappetence, and this is very common when opioids are taken.
    • Aging – Most seniors lose their appetite due to illnesses or dulling senses. At the beginning of the day, many seniors just aren’t hungry.
    • Stress – Any change or move can cause stress and GI upset.

Keep in mind, too, frequency is key here. “If the dog misses one meal I wouldn’t be too worried, but if the problem persists past that, a good medical exam and lab work is certainly recommended,” says Dr. Judy Morgan, 2019 Veterinary Hero Award Nominee and founder and CEO of Dr. Judy Morgan’s Naturally Healthy Pets, based in Wendell, North Carolina.

Lori Head, St. Joseph, Missouri-based head of US operations for Tonisity, maker of DoggyRade, echoes that sentiment, adding that although, “A loss of appetite in dogs doesn’t necessarily indicate serious issues, prompt veterinary attention is important and advised, especially a refusal to eat in dogs that usually eat well.” She lists dental disease, recent vaccinations and being in unfamiliar surroundings as other potential causes for dogs to stop eating.

Reasons your dog may stop eating can range from being a picky Poodle to a sickly Schnauzer. So, what is the solution for different reasons?

Dog doesn’t eat due to medical issues

“If your dog’s loss of appetite is caused by illness, your vet may recommend a prescription diet to meet your pet’s nutritional needs, while underlying issues are being addressed and identified,” says Lori.

Your dog may give you some clues if she is not eating because she isn’t feeling well. “Sometimes they realize a particular flavor (or protein) does not agree with them,” Dr. Morgan says and adds that a sick dog will usually have the following signs:

    • lethargy
    • making a lot of stomach noise
    • lip-licking
    • burping
    • vomiting
    • drooling
    • diarrhea

If a dog doesn’t feel well, Christine advises switching to a bland diet for a few days.

Dr. Morgan advises on possible physical issues or ailments that can prevent or deter a dog from eating:

    • A foreign body obstruction, a mass in the stomach or bowel, or cancer of the stomach or bowel.
    • Kidney failure and cancer are associated with lack of appetite. Sometimes dogs may not like a particular food or the smell is off (rancid food).
    • Dogs may have an upset stomach from something they ate or a food sensitivity or intolerance.
    • Pancreatitis, inflammatory bowel disease and colitis can all cause dogs to walk away from food.
    • If inappetence is accompanied by vomiting or diarrhea, a veterinary exam is warranted, particularly if there is blood or mucus in the vomit or stool.

Dog doesn’t eat due to nonmedical issues

“If it’s medical, the pet owner needs to defer to their vet,” Christine says. “But if it’s behavioral, it’s important to explore different types of food, from toppers to a fresh food diet. You can also try feeding on a lick mat or a food mat versus a bowl.

Once a medical issue has been ruled out, Lori suggests things you can do when your dog won’t eat:

    • Cut back on treats
    • Feed your pet on a regular schedule
    • Make mealtime fun time, such as playing with a toy that dispenses food, or rewarding your dog with food for doing a trick.
    • Take your dog for walk before mealtime.
    • Change your dog’s feeding situation; try feeding her alone if you have other animals.
    • Also try different bowls or plates at different heights to see what your dog prefers.

You may opt for an assist from a pro, and there’s nothing wrong with that. “Working with a certified trainer or behaviorist is best if your dog is boycotting and you’ve ruled out medical issues,” Christine advises. “If stress is the reason, a trainer can help determine why this is happening and how to resolve this issue.”

Never let your dog starve it out

Whatever the reason for inappetence, we’ve all heard the “The dog will eat when she’s hungry” attitude, but that isn’t advised. In fact, Dr. Morgan calls this a “Horrible solution. A pet should never be starved. Waiting them out for 24 hours is fine. For puppies, no more than 12 hours.”

Dogs and people can have similarities with food, including skipping a meal for no real reason. But having these tools at the ready can help you determine if it is a truly an issue and if so, what to do. Whatever you do, keep the Ben & Jerry’s to yourself.

Wabi-sabi philosophy leads revamp of Palau apartment in Barcelona

    [ad_1]

Local studio Colombo and Serboli Architecture has completed a clean and contemporary renovation of an apartment in Barcelona, spotlighting some of its “imperfect” original features.

The Palau apartment is situated a stone’s throw from the city’s Palau de la Música concert hall and backs onto a cluster of secluded courtyards.

Its owner, an Italian fashion designer, had initially asked Colombo and Serboli Architecture to upgrade only the bathroom and closet storage. But the practice suggested carrying out a more extensive renovation that indulged the apartment’s lofty proportions.

The practice also wanted to place greater emphasis on the home’s existing quirks in the spirit of wabi-sabi – the Japanese philosophy that celebrates the beauty of imperfections and the changes that come with the passage of time.

The hallway still boasts the apartment’s original stucco walls

“We decided to face the project through a wabi-sabi approach that could easily incorporate original features and imperfections while retaining the charm of the apartment,” the studio explained.

“Shapes are kept simple and bold with recurring basic forms – squares, circles, spheres – while sturdy solid surfaces were used to combine the monumental language of existing elements.”

Hollow steps in the new staircase hold cooking paraphernalia

The apartment is entered via a narrow hallway, where the practice left much of the original stucco walls exposed to reveal “layers of history”.

At the heart of the floor plan is a new multi-part staircase. It begins with a few suspended steps crafted from pale timber, followed by a micro-cement landing and a couple more timber steps.

White cabinetry was installed in the kitchen

The bottom block of steps is painted white and dog-legs around the wall to form a planted backrest for a white boucle sofa.

This small sitting area is dressed with a spherical paper lamp and a glass coffee table supported by terracotta orbs. Another large weathered patch of the apartment’s original stucco walls was preserved at the rear of the space.

A 3.5-metre bookshelf towers over the living room

The bottom section of the staircase also extends in the other direction to form a bench seat for the arched travertine table in the dining area. Steps facing this part of the home were hollowed out to accommodate crockery, recipe books and cooking ingredients.

Nearby, an all-white kitchen suite is finished with a porcelain countertop and backsplash. A bespoke boxy kitchen hood made from brushed steel was installed above the stove.

Just opposite the apartment’s sitting area is a larger double-height living room, illuminated by a tall corner window.

At its base, Colombo and Serboli Architecture created a chunky micro-cement platform where the owner can perch and take in views across the courtyards.

On the opposite side of the room, a 3.5-metre-high gridded shelf provides space for the owner to display his ever-growing collection of books and art objects.

The bedroom can be found on the apartment’s mezzanine level. One side of the room is taken over by a closet, which the studio fronted with wicker doors to turn it into a “warm monolith”.

LED lighting fitted on top of the storage draws attention to the apartment’s time-worn wooden ceiling beams.

One door of the closet has a diagonal cut-out that functions as a handrail for the stairs, while another can be pulled back to reveal a small nook containing a mirror and washbasin.

A third door hides the apartment’s bathroom, which is clad entirely in iridescent mother-of-pearl tiles.

“We played with different finishes, from glossy to rough, against the otherwise neutral palette,” explained the practice.

The same wicker used for the closet was wrapped around the bed’s headboard, which doubles as a balustrade for the mezzanine. Surrounding the headboard is a thick wooden ledge that forms two bedside tables.

The space was otherwise modestly decorated with a vintage orange leather chair and a wobbly-edged mirror.

Colombo and Serboli Architecture, which is run by Italian architects Matteo Colombo and Andrea Serboli, has revamped a number of homes around Barcelona in recent years.

Among them is the Klinker Apartment, which features brightly-coloured paintwork, and the Font 6 flat where a porthole window peeps through from the kitchen to the bathroom.

Japan Billionaire Picks Crew of Artists, Athletes for SpaceX Moon Trip

    [ad_1]

    • Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa has picked his crew for his flight to the moon on SpaceX’s Starship.
    • A crew of artists, content creators, and athletes from around the world will fly to the moon as soon as next year.
    • More than a million people from 249 countries and regions had applied to fly with Maezawa.

Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa has picked a motley crew for SpaceX’s first private lunar flight planned for next year, including DJ Steve Aoki and K-pop star T.O.P of boy band Big Bang.

Maezawa announced a crew of 10 — which includes two backups — for the mission called “dearMoon” in a YouTube video and a tweet posted on Thursday. Artists, content creators, and athletes from around the world, like American YouTuber Tim Dodd, and Indian television actor Dev Joshi are also part of the crew.

SpaceX said Maezawa and his crew will travel within 200 kilometers of the moon’s surface.

“The dearMoon crew will be the first humans Starship will launch, fly around the Moon, and safely return to Earth,” SpaceX said in its statement on Thursday. More than a million people from 249 countries and regions around the world had applied to fly with Maezawa, the company added.

Maezawa, a Japanese fashion tycoon with a net worth of $1.7 billion, had purchased all the seats on the Starship flight back in 2018. His unconventional choice of travel companions for his moon mission is in line with his eclectic and flamboyant persona.

Last year, he gave away money as he was returning to earth from the International Space Station after a 12-day trip.

In 2020, a year before he launched an open competition for the moon mission, Maezawa announced he was specifically looking for a romantic “female partner” to accompany him to the moon. He later called off the search.

  • Does Chocolate Cause Acne? | Eminence Organic Skin Care

Does Chocolate Cause Acne? | Eminence Organic Skin Care

    [ad_1]

It’s one of the world’s oldest foods, has inspired countless desserts and sweetened our holidays. It’s clear — we love chocolate. But, despite this universal obsession, chocolate also gets a bad rap for its association with acne. But does chocolate really cause acne? We went on a quest to unwrap the truth about this sweet and its effect on our skin.

    Does Eating Chocolate Cause Acne?

Before we get into the nitty-gritty, keep in mind that most research (even recent studies) focuses almost exclusively on male subjects. Many studies also concentrate on younger age groups, as opposed to middle or older age brackets, and primarily consider those with acne-prone skin.

We’ll start with the good news. Thankfully, much of the research around chocolate and acne agrees that chocolate on its own does not cause acne. Rather, it may be a high-glycemic diet that is the trigger (more on this topic below). If your dermatologist determines that your diet affects your acne, you may wish to discuss which foods to avoid, and chocolate could be on that list. However, the causes of acne need to be decided on a case-by-case basis. There are many reasons why you may suffer from acne (for example, the cause could be hormonal rather than diet related), so consult your dermatologist before making any changes to your diet or skin care.

The Relationship Between Chocolate And Acne

Now for the bad news. Although chocolate may not cause acne, at least one study shows a correlation between chocolate and the “exacerbation of acne.” This study confirms a “dose-dependent” relationship between chocolate and acne. In other words, researchers found that the more chocolate consumed, the more acne worsened. Although we need more research on the topic, the data suggest a potential link between chocolate and acne.

What Type of Diet Causes Acne?

So if chocolate aggravates acne but doesn’t necessarily cause it, what triggers initial breakouts? As mentioned, when it comes to diet, breakouts are more likely due to the consumption of sugar found in chocolate rather than the cocoa itself. When chocolate is combined with other high-glycemic foods filled with sugar and simple carbohydrates, this overall diet may potentially provoke acne breakouts. Similarly, the American Academy of Dermatology suggests that, rather than pointing to chocolate as the culprit, trying a low-glycemic diet might help. Healthline also suggests that, to avoid breakouts, you should ” … keep an eye on added sugars and simple carbohydrates throughout the rest of the day.”

What Is A High Glycemic Diet?

For most people, overall nutrition plays a huge role in breakouts and chocolate consumption is just a small part of a “big puzzle.” High glycemic diets that are full of sugar, carbohydrates and fat — including sugary drinks, sweet treats and processed bread, cereals and pasta — can trigger increased sebum production and raise your blood sugar quickly. These reactions lead to oily skin and inflammatory responses in the body. Low-glycemic foods, on the other hand, include vegetables, steel-cut oats, some fresh fruits and beans. Findings suggest that following a low-glycemic diet may reduce the amount of acne you have.

If your dermatologist believes your acne is diet-related, they may suggest a low glycemic diet where you monitor your sugar intake and simple carbohydrate consumption. Keeping a food diary to track how food choices affect your skin can also make it easy to discover insights into your skin’s unique triggers. Everyone’s skin is different though, and before making any major dietary changes, always consult a dermatologist for their insights.

How To Choose Chocolate that’s Best For Your Skin

Despite the link between acne and chocolate, what if you can’t resist the occasional nibble? We recommend reaching for chocolate with less refined sugar and a very short ingredient list. The best choice is an antioxidant-rich dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa, instead of milk or white chocolate which contains more sugar and additives.

Healthline includes the following tips when choosing quality dark chocolate:

    • High-quality dark chocolate lists chocolate liquor or cocoa as the first ingredient.
    • Refrain from dark chocolate with sugar first on the ingredient list
    • Avoid dark chocolate with milk, artificial flavorings or transfats (these can appear as hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oil) on the ingredient list
    • Selecting a chocolate product marked as fair trade and organic ensures that the farmers who worked to secure the cocoa beans are being paid correctly. Plus, your beans are less likely to have been exposed to pesticides or nasty chemicals.

  • Jabra Evolve2 Buds Test and in-depth Review by the Expert at HeadsetPlus.com

Jabra Evolve2 Buds Test and in-depth Review by the Expert at HeadsetPlus.com

    [ad_1]

Jabra is really well known for their true wireless earbuds and successfully they gain territory to their veteran Evolve 65t, one of the first true wireless earbuds certified for different UC platforms and with a unique and contained design, making them the best solution for people in need of a headset compatible with their computer and mobile devices such as cell phones, but without having something noticeable as a headband.

With the new improvements in technology and following Moore’s Law which indicates that newer technology will come in smaller sizes and more powerful features and/or chips, Jabra proudly introduces the Jabra Evolve2 Buds. The second generation of the Evolve 65t, the new Evolve2 Buds now offers a more compact and more comfortable design, and Jabra even took a step further in its performance and features, making the Evolve2 Buds a completely better true wireless earbuds and we will discuss them next.

The Evolve2 Buds now comes with Bluetooth Version 5.2, giving it a better range using the Jabra Link 380 with a further range than the previous generation, a much appreciated feature for people that need to be in their UC platform and have to walk around the office space. The Jabr aEvolve2 Buds are fully compatible with iPhones as with any Android cell phone as well, and they are certified for applications such as Google Meet, Microsoft Teams and Zoom for mentioning some of them.

The new and better design of the Jabra Evolve2 Buds now have the new created Jabra MultiSensor Voice feature, which means that even in the small size earbuds you can find not 1 or 2, but 4 Noise Canceling microphones, which work great in a conversation, as they actually only follow the users voice and this means that people even if want to walk out for some fresh air while on a call they can do it without compromising the performance of the microphone. For same reason of their size and for being able to walk around the design is a more welcoming design, personally i find them highly comfortable and you can wear them all day long without having the classics annoying pain of having something in your ear. Kuddos to Jabra for this new improvement design, my head and ears really appreciate it.

The Buds are Water proof and dust proof as people can take them outside for a jogging routine or to workout. The Evolve2 Buds have a really advanced feature as they have 2 VPU sensors, this means that this 2 sensors are designed for Bone conduction, meaning that the sound quality is not compromised due to the size of the earbuds.

A huge improvement that everyone will really appreciate on the evolve2 Buds is located in the case, on the previous generation the Link 370 for example needed to be always plugged into the computer or stored somewhere in order to avoid loosing it, those are days of the past , because the Evolve2 Buds case now it offers a special place where you can store the Link 380 and you can carry it with the buds in the case and with this no more lost dongles. Another huge improvement in the case is that it has a USB-C port, which means it has fast charging capability and on top of that it offers Qi wireless charging, this is a nice feature as you can charge them using your Qi charger or you can get the one designed by Jabra as well.

Special mention goes to this huge improvement over the previous generation. On the Evolve 65t you could only use the right bud and the left one will just connect to the right one, on the Evolve2 Buds that’s another thig of the past, now you can use either bud or both in order to make calls or enjoy your favorite playlist or webinar and if you run out of power on one by simply putting the other one on, it will take over from wherever you stayed.

Besides being smaller, more discrete and more comfortable the earbuds of the Jabra Evolve2 Buds offers super sound quality as they offer Active Noise Canceling (ANC) and with the well know HearThrough technology from Jabra, allowing the user to keep the buds on and even have a conversation face to face with a person. The earbuds can be customized using the Jabra Direct software with different functions, for example, you can choose of by pressing once on the right bud to launch Teams or the play/pause, or answer a call or even reject it. Thanks to Jabra Direct you can activate the In-Ear Detection settings, that allows you to Answer calls, mute calls or pause streaming by simply putting the ear buds on.

Thanks to the improvements now the Jabra Evolve2 Buds offer up to 8 hours of battery time on the buds per one charge and the improved case offers now up to 33 hours in the buds using it and it offers a 2 year manufacturer warranty with Jabra’s impressive and well knowledgeable tech support team.

The beat ear buds that I have worn in years, the Jabra Evolve2 Buds comes in MS Teams Edition and UC Version, both of them compatible with all the UC platforms in the market. Orders yours HERE.
