    Legendary rapper, businessman, media personality and creator of the Snoop Youth Football League, Snoop Dogg digs into a new line of apparel and accessories for his furry friends (and us!) called Snoop Doggie Doggs!     • Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” is the most streamed throwback song on Spotify this year.
    • Spotify defines “throwback songs” as those released over 20 years ago.
    • The song saw a 8,700% increase in Spotify streams this year, thanks to Netflix’s hit show Stranger Things.

    Kate Bush’s classic “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)” has taken the pole position as the most streamed throwback song on Spotify in 2022. 

    A Spotify Wrapped report on November 30 showed that streams of the song rose by more than 8,700% globally, during the Spring. 

    “Throwback songs” are defined by Spotify as songs that were released over 20 years ago. 

    The 64-year-old English singer-songwriter’s pop song — which was first released in 1985 — saw a chart resurgence back in June thanks to the latest season of Netflix’s “Stranger Things.” The 1985 hit played a crucial role in the series, as it was used to symbolize the isolation and alienation that Max Mayfield –portrayed by actor Sadie Sink– felt.

    Since the series premiered on May 27, the song went on to top both Billboard global charts in June, dethroning Harry Styles’ “As It Was.” Back in 1985, the then newly-released song only managed to climb to 30th position on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, per Billboard

    The song has also broken three Guinness World Records: The record for the longest time taken for a single to top the UK single charts, the record for the longest gap between No. 1 singles on the UK single charts, and the record for the oldest female artist to score a top hit on the UK single’s chart.

    The song was given a “whole new lease of life” by young fans of the Netflix series, Bush said in a statement

    Spotify and Bush did not immediately respond to Insider’s requests for comment.

    Sutr Santati: Then Now Next, the exhibition that was showcased in the capital, presented the narrative of India through its textiles. Each one of the about-100 textiles on view, from various regions of the country, displayed a plaque with a list of names. These highlighted not only the designers, textile artists and revivalists involved in the creation of each of the works, but also, importantly, the artisans involved — the embroiderers, weavers, dyers and printers.

    The exhibition — that concluded in late October — proved that textile craftsmanship in the nation is still a vibrant entity. But, the way we know or see it does bend to the will of commerce. Historically, grander techniques and materials — than the ones on display at Sutr Santati — were often used to create one-of-a-kind pieces under the art of patronage. But in a globalised, and machine-powered market, these techniques have become more streamlined, often to fit the choices of the buyers.

    With commerce out of the equation, designers, artists and artisans, who participated in the exhibition, could more freely explore present-day techniques and develop newer styles of textile manipulation to further the idea of Indian craftsmanship. And so, the exhibition collection, most of which was specially commissioned for the show, did not mimic textile samples found encased in museums from India’s colonial and pre-colonial eras. It innovated, by introducing new motifs, materials, and workaround ways to achieve a similar degree of complexity in the final material, leaving us with new hope for the future of textile revivalism.

    Excerpts from a conversation with Lavina Baldota, textile revivalist and curator of Sutr Santati….

    How do you plan to create awareness about India’s textiles, especially among the younger generation?
    The idea is to take the conversation about textiles beyond attire. Normally, we think of textiles as only related to something we wear. But in our country, textiles have always been a huge part of our art. They’ve been a huge part of our culture. We dress our gods in textiles, we have Pichwai paintings…. There has always been such a fine line between the craft and the art. I want to bring back that sensibility and give it a more contemporary context so that today’s generation becomes aware of the techniques. And I want to make it appealing to them — so that they are excited to put textiles up in their homes, maybe. Awareness creates appreciation, and appreciation will create aspiration. That’s the whole idea.

    What part does Sutr Santati have in your vision?
    Textiles have been such an important part of our freedom movement, the Swadeshi movement, and our culture. So, my first Sutr Santati exhibition was on Mahatma Gandhi, and khadi was a big element of that. This time as well, to keep the same mandate and take it forward, we used only indigenous yarns. You can see how many varieties of yarns we’ve used in this exhibition, and they’re all from the region the work was done in. For example, a Gujarati artisan would use Kala cotton, and Kandu cotton would be used in Karnataka. There are so many different kinds of yarns that people are not aware of — from camel hair and goat hair to different types of wools and wild silks. And using eco-friendly dyes was also a very important part of this exhibition so that you do not harm the environment when you create.

    Historically, patronage played an important role in the flourishing of several crafts. What has changed in this day and age with rapid consumerism and fast-paced production?
    The idea of slow consumerism is very important to me as a curator. Choose fewer things, but understand how they are made. And besides, textiles are quite long-lasting. They’re not in fashion or out of fashion ever, right? I mean, they are a heritage. And if you lose that craft, you will lose the culture. So it is important to have younger minds start thinking about the fact that you don’t need so many things.

    Textile revival comes with its own set of challenges. Trying to capture and recreate the exact style of making a bygone textile might not always be possible. Have you faced any such challenges?
    Yes, absolutely. The revival of anything that has been lost is so difficult. The Kodalikaruppur sari that was displayed in the exhibition, for instance, is in the process of revival. It’s been such a long path to get back that same red colour that was originally used. The environment has changed, and the water it used to be washed in has changed. The quality of the zari threads has changed. The motifs on the sari that were hand-painted have been replaced with hand-block printing. We have to be conscious not to lose the craft. It’s been a very tedious activity to revive it to its authentic self. So, if we can save a craft from languishing, we should. Rather than letting go of it completely and having no reference to bring it back.

    The recent exhibition talked about “then, now, and next”. Could you share with us what is next for you, and your wider endeavours by extension?
    I want this exhibition to travel around the world and my efforts at the moment are completely concentrated on that. We are collaborating with the Museums Victoria in Melbourne, and the exhibition is scheduled to be mounted from April to July 2023. I want this to be visible because it’s good to take a local conversation global. I want people abroad to understand our culture and engage with it.

    Finnish Design Shop creates forest-set logistics centre

    Avanto Architects and Joanna Laajisto have designed a logistics centre for retailer Finnish Design Shop that features warm timber, a foraged-food restaurant for staff and visitors, and views of the surrounding forest.

    Located on the outskirts of Turku, west of Helsinki, the logistics centre is the hub for storage, management and dispatch of products from the Finnish Design Shop, which says it is the world’s largest online store for Nordic design.

    The company needed a new logistics centre after a period of high growth, but founder and CEO Teemu Kiiski also aimed for it to be a meaningful place for employees and visitors.

    Employees of the logistics centre can enjoy plenty of light and forest views as well as warm timber environments and a restaurant run by Sami Tallberg, an award-winning chef who specialises in foraging.

    The Finnish Design Shop had first explored whether it could convert an existing building in the Turku area, but, finding nothing suitable, chose to build on a site in the Pomponrahka nature reserve, where the surrounding forest would provide a calming work environment and reflect the appreciation for wood in Nordic design.

    To undertake construction there responsibly, the Finnish Design Shop says the builders saved as many trees as possible and landscaped the area with natural forest undergrowth and stones excavated from the site.

    Avanto Architects designed the 12,000-square-metre building to blend into the forest as much as possible — a challenge given its massing, a product of the warehouse layout.

    The layout was created beforehand by specialist consultants to maximise the efficiency of operations, which are carried out by robots in an automated system.

    The architects opted for a dark facade with a vertical relief pattern that becomes visible on approach and echoes the tree trunks in the surrounding woodlands.

    “The pattern forms a more human scale to the large facade surfaces,” Avanto Architects co-founder Anu Puustinen told Dezeen. “We also used warm wooden accents in the main entrance vestibule, balcony and windows.”

    The architects gave the office spaces large windows so the employees could enjoy frequent views of the forest and lots of light, and included a balcony for access to the outdoors on the first floor.

    The entrance to the centre is through the showroom, which features glass curtain walls that showcase the use of the building and a long, straight staircase made from two massive glulam beams.

    The interior was designed by Laajisto and her studio, who aimed to make the space feel well-proportioned and comfortable despite its size and to create a good acoustic environment by liberally applying sound-absorbing materials.

    She kept the colour and material palette neutral and natural, with lots of solid pine and ash wood to continue the forest connection, but used furniture from the Finnish Design Shop in bright colours to punctuate the space.

    “The aim was that every aspect in the interior should be done well and beautifully,” Laajisto told Dezeen. “Attention to detail was embraced in things that typically are overlooked, such as doors, plumbing fixtures and electrical hardware selections and applications, acoustic ceiling panels and ceramic tiles.”

    The project is the first logistics building in Finland to be certified BREEAM Excellent, the second highest level.

    Kiiski, who positions the company as the opposite of multinational e-commerce players such as Amazon, aimed for the new centre to be the most socially and environmentally sustainable online store.

    “The values that life in the Nordic countries is based on include transparency, equality and respect for nature,” said Kiiski. “It would have been impossible to create this company and our new logistics centre without unwavering respect for these values.”

    He believes that global online shopping can be socially and environmentally sustainable when issues in supply chains, logistics and operations are addressed.

    “Many studies show that online shopping can have a lower carbon footprint as compared to in-store shopping,” said Kiiski. “This is due to the more efficient logistics in e-commerce and the fact that in-store shopping usually involves private transport.”

    “We want to push the whole industry towards a more sustainable future,” he continued.

    Past work by Avanto Architects includes the Löyly waterfront sauna in Helsinki, which has a multifaceted exterior that visitors can climb, and the Villa Lumi, a house with a sculptural white staircase.

    Laajisto’s previous projects include office interiors for service design company Fjord and the Airisto furniture collection for Made by Choice, which was inspired by Scandinavian holiday culture.

    Former Republican National Committee chair Michael Steele says that while the Republican Party would like to move on from former President Donald Trump, it won't be easy to do.

    Speaking on MSNBC on Wednesday, Steele said Republican leaders seemed eager to focus on other possible GOP presidential candidates for 2024, like Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. 

    "They want all of us at this point to fixate on, 'We're past Trump, we're no longer doing Trump," Steele said.

    "Oh, Trump was bad. Oh, this bright, shiny object down in Florida. Let's focus on that in Gov. DeSantis," Steele said of the GOP and its narrative. "But I'm sorry, you don't get to wipe that stain off your clean white shirt that easily because that's a deep stain."

    Steele referred to Trump's dinner with white nationalist Nick Fuentes and rapper Kanye West as yet another stain.

    "Embracing Fuentes was a deep stain. While you may not have done so directly, the leader of your party did," Steele added. "And as the head of your party and as a leader on the Hill or representing the party across the country at the state level, if you don't reject that, then that's you, baby."

    Steele was the chairman of the RNC between 2009 and 2011. He is now a vocal critic of Trump and a commentator on MSNBC.

    DeSantis has not announced his 2024 candidacy but is considered one of the GOP's leading candidates for the 2024 presidential ticket.

    Trump, who declared his bid for the 2024 GOP ticket on November 15, received considerable backlash after dining with Fuentes at Mar-A-Lago on November 22. Fuentes marched in the 2017 white supremacist "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, during which an avowed neo-Nazi drove his car into a group of counterprotesters, killing one woman and injuring 35 other people.

    Several GOP figures have blasted Trump for the dinner. On Friday, former GOP governor Chris Christie called the meeting "another example of an awful lack of judgment from Donald Trump" and a sign that Trump is an "untenable general election candidate." Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell on Tuesday also slammed Trump for meeting with Ye and Fuentes, saying there is "no room" in the GOP for white supremacy.

    A spokesperson at Trump's post-presidential press office did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

    Pets and People Together is a wonderful new pet launched by the Ad Council, Maddie’s Fund and the Humane Society of the United States. #BeAHelper is just the first messaging wave, encouraging us all to help pets and people in our communities by keeping them together as the best place for pets is with their people.

    “We are incredibly excited for this new campaign. If the last few years have taught us anything, it’s the vital role our pets play in our health, happiness and well-being, and how amazing it is when our community comes together,” says Mary Ippoliti-Smith, Executive Leadership Team at Maddie’s Fund in the campaign announcement. “Keeping families together is more important than ever, and we all have the opportunity to help make this happen.”

    Any of us could have a crisis that affects our ability care for our pets. Help those in this situation by:

    • Donating pet food to a pantry
    • Donating funds for vet care
    • Fostering a pet short- or long-term for someone in need
    • Helping to reunite a lost pet with their family or sharing what to do when someone loses their pet.

    Kitty Block, President and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, says about the program, “Our new Pets and People Together campaign highlights that each of us has a role to play in our community to help ensure that families and their beloved pets stay together.”

    The campaign has three new video public service announcements (PSAs). The heartwarming film “Magic Hour” shows how the small act of donating pet supplies to families in need brings joy to pet owners and their pets. The second film, “Muse,” unveils how financial donations from “helpers” keep pets and people together through unexpected hardship. The third film, “Moon,” looks at the benefits of short-term foster care by neighbors or friends and how it can make a huge impact.

    Creative agency Wunderman Thompson donated its services to develop the strategy and create the PSAs. In addition to television PSAs, the campaign features print, digital, out-of-home and radio PSAs. The resource-packed website, PetsandPeopleTogether.org, was developed in partnership with digital agency Viget.

    “Pets and People Together showcases the important role that community can play in keeping pets and people together. Everyday people can take actions both big and small to help ensure families with pets can stay together, even in the face of financial or medical hardships, or if a pet gets separated from their family,” says Heidi Arthur, Chief Campaign Development Officer at Ad Council, in the announcement. “We’ve proven countless times that when the Ad Council partners with the Humane Society of the United States and Maddie’s Fund, we can change an issue for the better. We’re proud of our continued partnership with these two impactful organizations.”
