Former Nazi Encampment on Tiny Channel Island for Sale for About $50K

    • Seven acres of Nazi trenches in the Channel Islands are up for sale for about £40,000 ($50,000).
    • The heavily-fortified site was home to 24 soldiers and 3 Nazi officers in the Second World War.
    • The Channel Islands were the only British territory to be occupied during the conflict.

A former Nazi encampment on a Channel island is up for sale for about £40,000 ($48,000).

The Channel Islands of Jersey and Guernsey, just off the coast of France, were the only British territory to be occupied during the Second World War.

The site is on Alderney, a tiny island just north of Guernsey. It features several acres of trenches, multiple gun stations, two bunkers, and numerous battlements and it was home to 24 soldiers and three officers from Nazi Germany.

Hitler heavily fortified the Channel Islands between 1942 and 1944 as part of his “Atlantic Wall” strategy — a system of coastal defenses intended to block an anticipated Allied invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe.

The two bunkers in the Alderney encampment were part of Hitler’s “Atlantic Wall” strategy.

Per the listing, the property offers “an amazing opportunity to own seven acres of WWII history.”

It’s also got “superb” sea views, a representative of estate agency Bell&Co told The Telegraph.

The site, known as Giffoine, is open to the public — and Bell&Co’s director Andrew Eggleston hopes it stays that way: “It would be a terrible shame if someone were to buy it and then start padlocking it.”

The property will be sold by sealed bid with offers being accepted until December 9. Several people have expressed interest, Eggleston told The Telegraph.

  • How To Train an Aussiedoodle – Dogster

How To Train an Aussiedoodle – Dogster

    [ad_1]

An Aussiedoodle is a hybrid of an Australian Shepherd and a Poodle. Aussiedoodles were first intentionally bred in North America in the late 1990s or early 2000s. Aussiedoodles are extremely intelligent, energetic dogs. They aren’t for couch potatoes, but they can be great for active families who want a companion for long walks, running and hiking. They have a life expectancy of 10 to 13 years.

So, if you want a playful, loyal, athletic dog, an Aussiedoodle can be the right dog for you.

    Aussiedoodle personality traits

To understand how to best train an Aussiedoodle, let’s look into the personality traits of the parent dog breeds to get an idea of what the Aussiedoodle temperament can be like.

Australian Shepherds are agile, athletic herding dogs who need a job. They are loyal, bold dogs with a strong work ethic. Aussies can be standoffish with new people at first. If not given appropriate tasks, they can become destructive, territorial and herd anything that moves. They have slightly wavy double coats.

Standard Poodles were originally bred as hunters to retrieve waterfowl. They have thick, curly fur that requires regular clipping and brushing. Poodles are very loyal to their family, friendly with people and dogs and highly intelligent. Very active and agile, they need regular outlets to expend their energy.

Aussiedoodles take on the characteristics of both Poodles and Australian Shepherds, depending on which parent dog breed has the dominant genes.

    Aussiedoodle traits can include:

    • Extremely intelligent and fast learners
    • Agile, athletic with strong work ethic
    • Retrievers who love water
    • Herders of people and moving objects
    • Playful and fun
    • Sociable with people and dogs
    • Devoted to their pet parents
    • Sometimes overly protective and territorial
    • Likely to test boundaries

Aussiedoodles require a job and can get bored and destructive without one. They need physical and mental exercise. If you have an Aussiedoodle, make sure to do the following:

    • Socialize him to new events, people and dogs
    • Take him hiking or running
    • Take him on long walks
    • Provide enrichment activities such as puzzle toys
    • Consider getting involved in rally, obedience, agility, dock diving or field events

    How to train an Aussiedoodle

Being as intelligent and driven as they are, it’s crucial that the training is challenging and not boring. If it’s too repetitive, the Aussiedoodle may shut down. Keep the training exercises fun and exciting. Of course, use positive reinforcement. As a baseline, teach the following:

    • Attention to name and a “look” cue. His herding and hunting drives will otherwise lead to him being distracted.
    • Loose leash walking (“Let’s go” cue). He must learn to not to herd moving objects and people.
    • Recall and emergency recall and “Leave it” cue. Because of an Aussiedoodle’s hunting and herding drives, it’s essential that he comes to you no matter what distractions there are, or he may chase and nip at passing joggers, people on bikes and skateboards, fast-moving vehicles and small animals.
    • Sit, down and stay. These cues will help with impulse control for the high-driven Aussiedoodle and will help prevent jumping on people (especially for the friendly Poodle side).
    • Give or drop cues. Retrieval work means he must readily release his prey.
    • “Say hello” cue. This teaches your Aussiedoodle when to be friendly to other people, countering any natural territoriality and helping with impulse control if his naturally friendly poodle genes prevail.
    • “Place” and “Settle” cues. Both help with impulse control of the extremely active Aussiedoodle.

All of the above cues are essential for any Aussiedoodle. And a working Aussiedoodle who’s off-leash performing obedience, rally, dock diving or field work must adhere to these cues in any distracting environment or will fail in such pursuits.

Aussiedoodles can be great companions for families who desire an active, fun dog. But you must meet the dog’s needs for him to reach his potential and not engage in unwanted behaviors. You can then look forward to all the adventures you’ll have together. And your friends will probably love him as much as you do!

What does an Aussiedoodle look like?

Depending on whether he looks more like his Poodle or Australian Shepherd ancestors, an Aussiedoodle can be solid colors like his Poodle ancestors, or merle or tricolor like his Australian Shepherd ancestors. He may have curly, medium or long hair, which requires regular grooming. Some have a bushy muzzle with fuzzy eyebrows and merle dappling. Aussiedoodles have wooly, floppy ears. Their size depends on their Poodle ancestors (Toy, Miniature or Standard).

They usually have rounder heads and shorter, wider muzzles than Poodles or Australian Shepherds do.

    • Toy Aussiedoodles usually have a Toy Poodle parent, are under 20 pounds and are 14 inches tall at the shoulder
    • Miniature Aussiedoodles have a Miniature Poodle parent, range from 30 to 40 pounds and are 20 inches tall at the shoulder
    • Standard Aussiedoodles have a Standard Poodle parent, are up to 70 pounds and 25 inches tall at the shoulder

  • Bezos’s Blue Origin Insists Astronauts Eat Breakfast Before Space Trip

Bezos’s Blue Origin Insists Astronauts Eat Breakfast Before Space Trip

    [ad_1]

    • Blue Origin likes to ensure passengers tuck into breakfast before launching to the edge of space.
    • Astronauts Sharon and Marc Hagle said they were told it was better to have food in their stomachs.
    • However, the company advised passengers to avoid drinking coffee and orange juice, they said.

Blue Origin, Jeff Bezos’s rocket company, makes sure its passengers eat breakfast before blasting 62 miles above the Earth’s surface.

That’s according to Sharon and Marc Hagle, the first married couple to fly into space on a commercial vehicle. They were onboard Blue Origin’s 20th trip to the edge of space on March 31, along with four other passengers.

The Hagles told Insider about their experience of flying with Blue Origin.

In the days before a rocket launch, Blue Origin passengers stay in the Astronaut Village campsite in the Texas desert, around 15 miles away from the company’s launch site near Van Horn.

After having to wake up around 4 a.m., Marc said the passengers left their rooms and went to have breakfast. Blue Origin laid a full spread out for them, the couple said.

“They insist that you eat breakfast,” Sharon said. “You have to have something in your stomach.”

Based on research from NASA and other experts in the space industry, the human body works better in zero gravity if there is food in the stomach, Marc said.

“They just asked us to stay away from orange juice and coffee because of the acid,” Sharon said.

NASA said in a flight surgeon’s report that pilots Alan Shepard and Virgil “Gus” Grissom, who flew on Mercury-Redstone 3 and Mercury-Redstone 4 missions respectively in 1961, were not allowed to drink coffee for breakfast on the morning of the launches because of its “diuretic properties.”

Blue Origin and NASA didn’t immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.

The Hagles plan to launch again soon with Bezos’ rocket company but were unable to disclose the date.

During the interview, they also agreed with fellow Blue Origin astronaut William Shatner about space trips triggering feelings of grief and intense emotions. Shatner previously said his journey to space with Bezos’s company “felt like a funeral” and all he saw was sadness.

Favorite Eminence Products From Maitreyi Ramakrishnan And Other Celeb Stars

    [ad_1]

We’ve been lucky to attract celebrity fans around the world who share their love for Eminence Organic Skin Care. These fans have discovered our products either on their own, via an esthetician or through the on-set makeup artist for their latest TV show or movie. Recently, Never Have I Ever actress Maitreyi Ramakrishnan expressed her love for Eminence products, as did Firefly Lane actors Katherine Heigl and Beau Garrett. Other fans include The White Lotus stars Haley Lu Richardson and Adam DiMarco, who shared praises for their favorite Eminence Organics products. Keep reading to find out which products they love.

    Maitreyi Ramakrishnan

Netflix’s Never Have I Ever is coming up to its third season after extreme success and two seasons of teen heartbreak and adventures. This coming-of-age drama focuses on an Indian-American teenager who wants to improve her high school social status. The lead character, portrayed by Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, faces the hazards of teen life including awkwardness, romantic entanglements and family tensions.

We were excited when Maitreyi Ramakrishnan shared her skin care routine with Vogue, revealing that she pairs the Stone Crop Cleansing Oil and Clear Skin Probiotic Cleanser together for “efficiency sake,” and follows up with the Stone Crop Hydrating Mist.

The Stone Crop Cleansing Oil contains stone crop, a hydrating and moisturizing ingredient that revitalizes the look of the skin. This formula also has a Detoxifying Microgreens Complex, a blend of microgreens that protects against the drying effects of environmental stressors and reduces the signs of aging.

The Clear Skin Probiotic Cleanser is ideal for break-out prone skin. This formula contains a Biocomplex2™, a  booster of antioxidants that restores the look of radiance and vitality, as well as a cucumber juice that tones and shrinks the appearance of pores. This cleanser moisturizes and nourishes the skin with yogurt and sweet almond milk.

If you’re dealing with an uneven skin tone, the Stone Crop Hydrating Mist is ideal. This mist contains hydrating and healing stone crop plus lavender, which makes the skin appear calmer and more restored.

Haley Lu Richardson And Adam Di Marco

The White Lotus is an HBO hit that’s also topping the charts. This satire follows the lives of hotel employees as well as guests vacationing at the exclusive White Lotus resort and hotel. The show follows many different plot lines simultaneously, from a hotel manager to the life of a young assistant brought along to the resort.

The young assistant is played by actress Haley Lu Richardson, who became a fan of Eminence after being introduced to the products at a local spa. Richardson shared that after experiencing Eminence products in her routine, her skin became “… so much happier and healthier!” The 27-year-old recently spoke to Vogue, walking them through her skin care and makeup routine. You can view the videos below.

The White Lotus actor Adam DiMarco plays a Stanford graduate on a family trip in the drama. A fan of our Coconut Age Corrective Moisturizer, he says, “I was introduced to the Eminence Organics Coconut Age Corrective Moisturizer on set and it’s been the best product ever for my skin! Not only does my skin feel smooth and stay clear, the compliments haven’t stopped since I started using it.” This moisturizer is formulated with coconut oil, a nourishing ingredient rich in antioxidants that moisturizes the skin. It also contains coconut water which provides hydration to the skin.

    Katherine Heigl And Beau Garretts

Netflix hit Firefly Lane is another popular drama that features actors who are Eminence fans. The drama explores the lives of two women and their friendship over the span of their lives, from 1970s to their adulthood in the early 2000s.

Firefly Lane actress Beau Garrett received an Eminence Organics facial, after which she said: “Thank you so much for treating me like a queen!” Her co-star, Emmy award-winning actress Katherine Heigl, has been a loyal Eminence fan for many years: “I can’t get enough of the skin care line. I take them on the plane and give myself a facial …”

Heigl first came across Eminence Organic Skin Care when visiting a day spa in Utah. She was so pleased with her skin care results that her manager contacted us after the treatment, and our company president, Boldijarre Koronczay, traveled to Katherine’s home to provide a facial and personal skin care consultation.

  • New Help for Dogs with Cancer – Dogster

New Help for Dogs with Cancer – Dogster

    [ad_1]

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, approximately 1 in 4 dogs will, at some stage in their lives, develop a tumor, and almost 50 % of dogs over age 10 will develop cancer. But efforts are underway to help pets improve life quality and expectancy — and help owners cope.

Three organizations helping your dog with cancer:

    The Pet Cancer Foundation

The Pet Cancer Foundation officially launched in October 2022 and next year seeks to invest $2.5 million in research for earlier cancer detection in pets, $1 million to research pet-specific cancer treatment options and another $1 million to provide veterinarians with better information to improve the cancer care that pets receive.

    For more information, visit petcancerfdn.org.

Canine Cancer: Take C.H.A.R.G.E. (Canine Health and Registry Exchange)

Earlier this year, the Canine Cancer: Take C.H.A.R.G.E. (Canine Health and Registry Exchange) established the first-ever national database of the incidence and prevalence of canine cancer to help target diagnoses and treatment decisions. The information is taken directly from dog owners and vets based on personal experience with canine cancer. The database, overseen by eight leading veterinarians who specialize in canine oncology and surgery, is open to the public and the first-of-its-kind resource that will help guide canine cancer diagnosis and treatment decisions from incidence rates reported on a large scale.

    For more information, visit takechargeregistry.com

    Wild Blue Dogs

Wild Blue Dogs raises money for Comparative-Oncology, a fast-growing field of cancer research that ties together the study of cancer in dogs and humans. The organization fundraisers through weeklong summer and fall dog camps held on Lake Tahoe in California, where owners and their dogs participate in adventurous and bonding activities, guided by dog trainers and coaches. To donate, you can choose whether your funds go toward canine cancer research or treatments. To learn more, go to wildbluedogs.org.

How important is finding support when your dog has cancer?

A multi-year Gallup survey of U.S. dog owners and a retrospective review of more than 35,000 anonymous canine patient records found that when a dog is diagnosed with cancer, the owner often suffers from depression and anxiety. But, if the owner is able to manage his dog’s cancer treatment side effects well, such as pain, urinary incontinence and diarrhea, his well-being improves.

A dog cancer diagnosis is sad and filled with uncertainty, but utilizing these resources and furthering cancer research and treatments for all dogs, can bring the whole family a level of comfort.

Studio Tate creates “textural earthiness” for Relinque wellness spa

    [ad_1]

Melbourne-based Studio Tate has used raw and tactile materials to create “a soothing urban oasis” for the Relinque spa in Melbourne.

Located in north east Melbourne, the 800 square-metre space includes a day-spa, spinal clinic, pilates and yoga studios.

    Reception Relinque
The interiors are informed by local parks and waterways

Local practice Studio Tate was informed by nearby parklands and waterways to create “a soothing urban oasis”.

“It was important to create a textural earthiness that evokes the senses, while striking a balance between sophistication and approachability,” explained Studio Tate senior associate Emily Addison.

    Treatment room Relinque
A deep rust tone in the treatment rooms was selected to be gender neutral

The treatments rooms were located on either side of a central reception area, with the spa and yoga studio located on one side and the spinal clinic and pilates studio on the other.

Studio Tate used green marble, honed granite and hand-glazed Japanese tiles in the reception area, where visitors are encouraged to relax and browse the retail products before stepping into treatments.

    Corridor Relinque
Curved corridors encourage visitors to explore the space

The yoga studio was intentionally positioned close to the entrance facing the street, which allows plenty of natural light. A timber floor and ceiling were desigend to create a sense of warmth in the room.

Moving further into the spa area, the tones get darker to provide privacy. Spaces were arranged in a circular configuration, which “encourages a continuous experience of the venue”.

    Relinque spa
The design aimed to have “textural earthines”

A curved corridor finished in polished plaster leads visitors to the spa area. Five individually-contained treatment rooms feature a deep rust tone, steam showers with sage green tiles and a granite shower bench.

Above the treatment bench, a backlit ceiling creates a halo around a circular acoustic fabric panel. The gently diffused light helps calm the mind throughout treatments.

The rounded steam room is lined with mosaic tiles, facing directly onto an ice room centred around an ice well covered in Japanese ceramic tiles.

“Luxurious accents are balanced with raw and tactile materials, ensuring the space feels welcoming to all,”added Addison.

    Shower Relinque
Steam showers are lined with sage green tiles and a granite shower bench

A palette of greens, greys, burgundy and earth tones were used throughout the space in response to the nature-themed design narrative, according to Addison.

Studio Tate is led by interior designer Alex Hopkins and Carley Nicholls. The studios previous work includes an open office design for Burnet Institute and a day-spa with calming interiors in Melbourne.

  • Debt-Ridden Ghana Plans to Buy Oil With Gold Instead of Dollars

Debt-Ridden Ghana Plans to Buy Oil With Gold Instead of Dollars

    [ad_1]

    • Ghana’s government is planning to use gold to pay for oil instead of shelling out US dollars.
    • The move is expected to reduce the “persistent depreciation” of the cedi, the Ghanaian currency.
    • As of end-September, Ghana’s forex reserves were just enough to cover 3 months worth of imports.

Ghana’s government is planning to go back to a barter system of trade.

In order to protect the country’s fast-dwindling foreign currency reserves, Ghana wants to pay for oil with gold instead of shelling out precious US dollars, Mahamudu Bawumia, the country’s vice president said Thursday

Ghana’s gross international reserves  have fallen by about one-third — from $9.7 billion at the end of 2021 to around $6.6 billion at the end of September 2022, according to official data.

The reserves will cover just 2.9 months of the country’s goods and services imports — short of the government’s target of covering three-and-a-half-months worth of imports for 2022, according to a copy of the country’s budget speech delivered by finance minister Ken Ofori-Atta on Thursday.

The Ghanaian government is looking to implement the “new policy regime” of using gold to buy oil products in the first quarter of 2023, in order to counter inflation due to the depreciation of the cedi, Ghana’s currency. The cedi has fallen against the US dollars because there is strong demand for the greenback from oil importers, Bawumia explained in a Facebook post on Thursday.

By not using the US dollar in the country’s oil trade, the move is expected to reduce the “persistent depreciation” of the cedi, because sellers of fuel in the country will no longer have to take the dollar-cedi exchange rate into account when pricing their products, he added.

Ghana’s gold-for-oil policy is unusual because it itself is an oil producing country. However, it still has to import refined oil products such as gas and diesel, because Ghana’s only oil refinery has been offline following an explosion in 2017, per Reuters.

It’s even more unusual, as barter deals typically involve an oil-producing country trading for non-oil goods.

But Ghana — which also produces gold — is mired in a debt crisis and is negotiating a relief package with the International Monetary Fund.

Finance minister Ofori-Atta said in his Thursday speech the country is “in high risk of debt distress” as the cedi’s depreciation was “seriously affecting” its ability to manage its public debt. The cedi has lost more than half its value against the US dollar so far this year.
