You know the look — that puppy-dog-eyed glance. Your dog raises his eyebrows, flashes a fretful face and you stop in your tracks.
You’ll do nearly anything to appease him. Treat? Car ride? Steak? Gucci collar? $500 orthopedic bed?
Recent research reveals that our emotional response to those puppy dog eyes is part of an intense bond between humans and dogs that has likely been in the works for tens of thousands of years.
What are puppy dog eyes?
So, what exactly are puppy dog eyes? “I describe it as (dogs) looking either worried or sad. Just that sad face. They get the wrinkles on the skin of their head,” says Anne Burrows, a biological anthropologist and professor at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh.
We’re drawn to those puppy dog eyes because dogs and humans communicate through eye contact and facial expressions. Researchers say that when dogs and humans lock eyes with one another, there’s an actual physiological reaction that produces what’s called “the love hormone.”
“When humans and dogs gaze into one another’s eyes, both species release that hormone, oxytocin. We don’t seem to do that when we look into the eyes of any other animal. It’s the same hormone that mothers release when they gaze into their newborn baby’s eyes,” Anne says.
Anne and her colleagues wanted to find out what underlays this unique affinity between dogs and humans — and they made some groundbreaking discoveries. “I was beyond excited,” Anne says.
In 2019, the team found that dogs have a facial muscle called the levator anguli oculi medialis, which allows them to make those puppy-dog-eyed looks and raise their eyebrows — but the domesticated dogs’ ancestor, the wolf, does not have that muscle.
“We looked at a variety of dog breeds as well as just mixed breeds,” Anne says. “We found that most dogs we examined have this muscle in their eyebrow region. But we didn’t find it in any of the wolves that we examined.”
Anne’s newest research, released earlier this year, discovered that dogs have significantly more “fast twitch” muscle fibers in their faces than wolves. This allows dogs to make facial expressions rapidly, similarly to how people can quickly change their facial movements.
“Dogs and humans have facial expressions and facial muscles, much more alike than dogs and wolves,” Anne says.
Researchers hypothesize that dogs — that evolved from wolves — developed these characteristics to communicate better with humans.
As a dog lover, Anne knew these discoveries were significant. “We were just so happy because you don’t often have big wins in life. I just came home, and I hugged my dog,” Anne says.
So how did dogs develop these physical traits to capture our hearts with just one look? Let’s rewind about 33,000 years.
The evolution of puppy dog eyes
During the Upper Paleolithic Stone Age period, likely in Siberia and Western Europe, humans were cave-dwellers living in camps among wolves. Scientists theorize that some of the tamer wolves likely started hanging around, hoping to get a scrap of food, and caught the eye of humans who felt an emotional connection to the wolves.
“The friendly wolves probably had the ability to make this puppy dog eye expression and along with that became acceptable to have around your camp,” Anne says. “I think it was just like, ‘This wolf is pretty friendly. Let’s let this one stay with us.’ It just started the process of companionship.”
As these friendlier wolves started breeding, evolving into domesticated dogs, they appeared to have developed the levator anguli oculi medialis muscle and faster twitch facial muscle fibers than wolves. “I think it just accidentally evolved,” Anne says.
The results of the research are raising enthusiastic eyebrows among other scientists.
“I think these findings offer very compelling evidence that dogs have evolved to interact with humans. These findings show how well-adapted dogs are for life in the human social niche: their facial musculature has altered to allow them to be more effective at communicating with people,” says Erin E. Hecht, an assistant professor in the Department of Human Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University.
So the journey of wolves into dogs and the bond between humans and dogs may have started because cave dwellers gazed into some wolves’ eyes, thought they were cute — and it changed the world.
“The evolution of puppy dog eyes is just one more way that dogs have hijacked the bonding pathway that was supposed to be reserved for our babies. I’m not sure there’s anything like it anywhere else in the animal kingdom,” says Brian Hare, a professor of psychology and neuroscience at Duke University.
Humans and dogs evolve together
Anne adds that during the time wolves were domesticating into dogs, they may have also played a role in the evolution of humans.
“Humans became more domesticated themselves,” Anne says. “Our brains became bigger. Men and women stopped being so different in sizes. We started to settle down in one place; instead of these nomadic cave dwellers, you start to see the onset of at least temporary houses that people built.”
The connection shared between dogs and humans possibly impacted both species physically and emotionally. “It’s a deep, strong bond,” Anne says. “We changed one another’s anatomy, one another’s physiology. We changed one another’s brains.”
How puppy dog eyes affect us
Just in case you need confirmation: dogs likely know how to work us over. They have mastered how to catch our eye. They’ve been perfecting that manipulating puppy-dog-eyed look since the Stone Age.
“It seems like the only explanation,” Anne says. “It’s all tied to mutual gaze.”
And that gaze is something dogs reserve just for us. When your dog interacts with other dogs, they mostly communicate through smell, play bows, tail wags and hackling of their fur. “But they don’t use facial expressions with one another the way that they use facial expressions with people,” Anne says.
The next time you hear about someone running into a burning building to save their dog — or a dog that risks his life to rescue his pet parent, it might just be because the 33,000-years-long love affair between the two species has resulted in an attachment like no other.
“People love dogs so much because dogs love us so much,” Anne says. “Dogs just get us in a way that no other animal does.”
(Note: No dogs or wolves were harmed for the purpose of Anne’s studies mentioned in this article.)
Sheer curtains that look like translucent walls were used to divide up the structure of this temporary showroom space in Japan created by Domino Architects.
Shortlisted in the large retail interiors category of Dezeen Awards 2022, PROUD Gallery Gotanda aims to offer a solution to the wasteful practice of producing condominium showrooms – temporary structures near new developments that are used as a base for sales teams.
The showroom was created by Domino Architects
The showrooms, which are usually built and then demolished within a matter of years once the units are all sold, typically contain a customer reception and seating area, as well as rooms for meetings and presentations. These are all styled with the target customer in mind.
“It’s like a theme park with effects to motivate people to buy,” said the architecture studio.
“As entertainment, it is very interesting, but we wonder if this method of spending a large amount of energy each time is really appropriate for this age.”
Arches were constructed using mesh curtains
Domino Architects worked with HAKUTEN and Nozomi Kume from Studio Onder de Linde to create a more sustainable alternative for Nomura Real Estate Development and its PROUD condominium brand in Tokyo.
Built using the prefabricated skeleton structure of an existing Nomura showroom, the layout of PROUD Gallery Gotanda is easy to change, expand and reconstruct.
The steel structure is wrapped with light curtains while the partitions inside the business meeting space are made from “foldable walls”, which are curtains with a wall-like thickness.
These foldable walls have arched openings and can be repositioned so that the layout can be easily changed according to purpose.
“By carefully examining the sheen, curves, and colour overlap of the curtains, we were able to create an elegant and light space that does not feel like a rugged prefabricated structure,” the studio said.
The arches can be moved and repositioned
The materials and samples used in the planned condominiums are subtly incorporated into the interior as part of the showroom’s furniture and fixtures.
The idea is to allow the buyer to imagine a space rather than be entirely dictated to.
In Amsterdam, design studio Beyond Space has created an office interior in Amsterdam that uses rippling laser-cut fabric to form cave-like spaces for working.

An AirTag led police to a dumpster filled with more than 100 stolen Democratic campaign signs in Philadelphia, according to the Tredyffrin Township Police Department.
In a press release, the police department said it received numerous reports of stolen political signs from community members between Oct. 10 to Oct. 13.
Police said a person whose signs were stolen told them that one of their signs had an AirTag attached to it which led officers to a commercial dumpster behind the Valley Fair Shopping Center where they discovered more than 100 signs. The department did not disclose the name of the resident who attached the AirTag to the campaign sign or why they did so.
AirTags are a tracking accessory that helps users find whatever the AirTag is attached to by integrating with Apple’s “Find My” app.
Law enforcement told BuzzFeed News that the political signs were in support of Democratic candidates or causes such as reproductive health issues and Black Lives Matter. The news outlet spoke with Sandy Gilson, a resident of Tredyffrin Township who noticed four political signs, including one for Democratic Senate candidate John Fetterman were missing.
Arlene Talley, Gilson’s friend and a member of the Chester County Democratic Committee, told BuzzFeed News she showed up at the dumpster after Gilson told her where they were located and found 118 signs.
“I just started taking them out and putting them in my car,” Talley told BuzzFeed.
Pennsylvania State Rep. Melissa Shusterman tweeted her signs had been removed and blamed “local Republicans” for stealing them.
Raffi Terzian, the chairman of the Republican Party of Chester Country issued a statement in response to Shusterman’s allegations, saying it was unfortunate that the representative “decided to try to score political points with this issue by using highly charged and divisive rhetoric and pointing blame at local Republicans.”
Terzian’s statement condemned the thefts and stated that the Republican party had also received reports of signs that had gone missing or were vandalized.
The police department said they have no suspects at this time.
The Apple AirTag has been used to track campaign signs before: In April, a candidate in Florida used an AirTag to track a stolen campaign sign located in a Jeep parked outside the home of his political rival.
The Tredyffrin Township Police Department and representatives for Shusterman did not respond to Insider’s request for comment.

The Chairwoman of the Republican National Committee made a number of predictions about November’s midterms, including that the Senate will be narrowly split and that if the GOP wins, it will “retire” Nancy Pelosi as the House Speaker.
In an interview with Jon Decker, a White House correspondent for Gray Television, Ronna McDaniel was referring to the fact that if Republicans take the house, they will be in charge of electing a new Speaker.
She told Decker she thinks the Senate will be very tight. “I think it will be one seat either way,” she said.
The RNC chair added she’s optimistic about Pennsylvania Senate candidate Dr. Mehmet Oz, despite him trailing Democratic candidate John Fetterman in recent polling.
“Everything is trending towards Oz and we feel really confident in this race,” McDaniel said.
When asked about the allegations surrounding Herschel Walker, the Georgia Republican nominee for Senate, McDaniel told Decker he’s been “very forthcoming” about his struggles with mental health.
Those allegations include Walker paying for a former girlfriend to get an abortion despite being a staunch opponent of abortion rights. Walker has denied paying for an abortion, calling the story a “flat out lie.” Walker’s son and ex-wife have also accused him of being “physically abusive.”
According to FiveThirtyEight, Republicans are favored to win the House while Democrats are slightly favored to win the Senate.
Representatives for McDaniel did not respond to Insider’s request for comment.

If you’re looking for the perfect stocking, check out these adorable offerings from artist Melodie Musick. Other than regular grade school and high school art classes, Melodie is mostly self-taught but has loved drawing and painting for as long as she can remember.
Melodie opened her Etsy shop (RaeRussellDesigns) in 2019, starting with portraits and tote bags. When she came across a cute, jute stocking she thought might be fun to work with, she painted one for her dog. After posting it on Facebook, everyone loved it, and she actually got quite a few orders based on that post. So, she added it to her shop, and it has grown from there — she’s now in her fourth year of creating and selling the stockings.
A lifelong animal lover, Melodie is particularly taken with dogs. “I grew up with dogs, cats, horses, cows, you name it,” she says. “But there is something about dogs. I love their personalities, their capacity for love and forgiveness and how unique they are.”
Her own dog, 11-year-old Trooper Russell, is an inspiration to her. “He didn’t have the best first part of his life,” Melodie says. “There was some abuse and some bad situations, but now he is nothing but a ball of love. When I adopted him, I gave him the name Trooper because that’s what he is — he just keeps on going no matter what, giving love to everyone he meets.”
One of her favorite parts of painting the stockings is seeing the photos she’s sent by customers. “I love their names, their expressions, and I love knowing that they are so loved that their humans want a painting of them,” she says. “I wish every single animal could be that loved in their lifetime.”

Chinese studio FOG Architecture has added over a hundred moving display boxes to skincare brand Super Seed’s latest retail store in Hangzhou, China.
The studio installed 168 kinetic semitransparent acrylic boxes in the main product display area of the 300-square-metre store.
Its aim was for the boxes to help create a variety of different display combinations, while also encouraging more interactions between the visitors and the products.
Over one hundred movable acrylic display boxes are installed at the store
An electric motor moves the boxes, which were programmed to move vertically in two different ways.
Under the static mode, the boxes can move up and down to one of three height levels, while under the dynamic mode, seven height levels can be selected.
FOG Architecture uses steel ropes and stranded wires to hang the boxes from the ceiling and selected 20 millimetres per second as their moving speed after multiple tests, to ensure maximum security and smooth movement.
The boxes can move up and down at various heights
“It challenges the divorce between fixtures and furnishings in traditional spaces by softening the borderlines between itself and the walls, floor, ceiling, and lighting,” FOG Architecture said of the installation.
“This novel installation redefines the formal expression of the functionality of shelves, producing a unique spatial experience,” it added.
Display areas can be easily transformed for different purposes
The studio has also designed a series of modular chairs to go with the display boxes. These wooden chairs can be placed next to the acrylic boxes when they’re at floor level, helping to create a seating and display area.
“Unique shopping experiences rely on the creative interpretation of conventional spaces and the innovative application of everyday functionalities,” said the studio.
“In this case, we envisioned a retail method different from packed shelving units, and proposed a multipurpose, interactive, and interesting display structure.”
Next to the product display area, there are five “labs” where visitors can try out the products. FOG Architecture used metal counters to give this area a futuristic feel that would highlight Super Seed’s technology and research background.
At the entrance of the store, an inflatable wall adds softness to the otherwise hard space where metal, glass and acrylic are the main materials.
Metal counters are used to make the space feel like a lab
Various plant exhibitions can be found throughout the store in a nod to the fact that the skincare brand is plant-based.
Dried plants were placed in capsule-shaped containers, while green plants were mixed with the beauty products in the acrylic display boxes, creating an intriguing visual effect through the frosted semitransparent boxes.
An inflatable wall installation is used to soften the space
FOG Architecture was founded by Zheng Yu and Zhan Di and has offices in London, Shanghai and Chongqing.
