Outdated Kitchen Countertop Trends and New Options

    [ad_1]

Kitchen countertop styles change over time, as do all trends. Enjoy the countertop material you have if you are satisfied with it and it works well in your kitchen. However, some people believe that using a new material would improve the appearance and functionality of their kitchen. In this exploration, we will explain the most popular countertop materials so that you can make an informed decision for your kitchen and budget.

Kitchen countertops play a vital role in the look and function of a kitchen. Kitchen countertop materials, like all interior design trends, become outdated, often due to overuse, but also because designers are constantly looking for new materials to use.

    Outdated Kitchen Countertop Trends

Design preferences change all the time, so because interior design is a moving target, you should use the materials you prefer in your kitchen. But if you are thinking about updating, check out some of these ideas to get a sense of the direction of kitchen countertop design.

    Tile Countertops

    Tile Countertops
    SoYoung Mack Design

Tiles became popular as a countertop material in the mid-twentieth century and remained so in kitchens into the 1970s and 1980s. Many homeowners loved tile countertops because they were a relatively inexpensive material that could be customized to match the style of the kitchen. Yet, tile and the subsequent grout lines were never ideally suited to kitchen countertops. The grout was prone to staining and discoloration, and the uneven surface collected food and dirt. Tiles are also less durable than modern countertop materials because they chip and crack easily, and the grout lines wear down over time.

    Laminate Countertops

    Laminate Countertops
    Cabinet-S-Top

Laminate countertops were once a popular and affordable kitchen countertop option, but their popularity has declined in recent years. Laminate countertops attempt to mimic the appearance of natural materials, but the designs are limited and appear artificial. Laminate is also subject to chipping, scratching, and burning. Once the damage is done, the entire surface must be replaced to be repaired. Moisture can cause the laminate to swell and warp, which is common because the seams and edges are prone to water penetration. This type of countertop can also reduce your resale value, as many homebuyers prefer more upscale options than laminate.

    Waterfall Edges

    Waterfall Edges
    TRG Architecture + Interior Design

The waterfall edge, which extends the countertop material vertically down either side of the island, has become a popular and widely adopted style over the last decade. This style, once the pinnacle of sophistication and luxury, has become an outdated trend due to overexposure and a lack of utility.

As with many trends, the more people who do it, the more others seek out alternative options. Designers are moving back to traditional slab countertops that sit atop cabinet style islands. The waterfall style is unsuitable for the practical kitchens that people desire today because it does not allow storage on the cabinet sides, limiting the fixture’s available storage and utility.

    Granite Countertops

    Granite Countertops
    Fabricators Unlimited

Granite countertops were popular in the early 2000s for a very good reason. They are a natural stone, highly durable, and come in a gorgeous variety of patterns and colors, but this very popularity has led many kitchen designers to consider other kitchen countertop options. Granite countertops were popular in the early 2000s. Many homes adopted this same countertop type at the same time, and this has given some granite varieties a dated look.

Some people still want granite because it is cost effective and long-lasting. If you want to use granite in your kitchen, look for lighter and solid-colored options. The speckled brown and black varieties are the most outdated.

    Stainless Steel Countertops

    Stainless Steel Countertops
    Phillip Smith General Contractor

Stainless steel countertops, once associated with industrial kitchens, also became popular in residential kitchens. Stainless steel countertops are an extremely practical choice; they are durable, anti-bacterial, and stain-resistant, but they lack the warmth that many homeowners want to create in their kitchen. The hard surface of these countertops can amplify noise in the kitchen, making them a bad choice for people who want a quiet home. They can also be difficult to keep clean from fingerprints, smudges, and watermarks.

    Marble Countertops

    Marble Countertops
    Nicholas Design Collaborative

Let’s be clear, marble countertops will always be a timeless and beautiful countertop for kitchens, but the broad love affair with marble countertops might be waning. This is not because marble is any less beautiful; it is only because modern families want more durable and cost-effective countertop options that are still gorgeous.

As much as everyone loves marble, it is a soft and porous natural stone. This can make it chip, crack, and stain more easily than other, more durable options. If you still love marble, and many people do, consider using it just for an island, where it won’t receive as much wear and tear, and use an alternate material on the other countertops that receive more action.

Cool Countertop Materials To Take in Consideration

When choosing a countertop material, consider the cost, aesthetic preferences, and maintenance requirements to find one that meets your needs.

    Quartz Countertops

    Quartz Countertops
    Studio Dearborn

Quartz countertops have grown in popularity in recent years, and it is understandable why. This is a synthetic countertop made from 90%-95% crushed natural stone mixed and molded with a strong resin. The combination of crushed stone and resin produces a strong surface that can withstand constant wear and tear, resists heat, and is simple to maintain.

Quartz comes in a wide range of colors and patterns, many of which resemble natural stone. The price of quartz varies, with some types being relatively inexpensive at around $50 per square foot and others being more expensive, up to $200 per square foot.

    Quartzite Countertops

    Quartzite Countertops
    Alana Irwin Interiors

Quartzite is an authentic natural stone, similar to granite and marble, but because it is a metamorphic rock, it is harder than both. Quartzite has grown in popularity not only due to its dense nature but also because of its striking beauty.

Quartzite comes in a wide range of colors, each with intricate vein patterns that make the stone unique. The dense nature of the stone makes it extremely durable, heat resistant, and simple to maintain. Quartzite prices range from $80 per square foot at the low end to $220 per square foot for premium varieties.

    Butcher Block Countertops

    Butcher Block Countertops

Practical and eco-friendly countertops are popular with the next generation of homeowners, and this is why many of them are turning to butcher block style countertops. Both wood and bamboo butcher block countertops are available. These have a warm and natural aesthetic that works well in kitchens, and they are cost-effective.

The average price for butcher block counters is between $50-$100 per square foot, depending on the thickness and type of wood. Bamboo countertops, similar to wood countertop varieties in terms of warmth and look, cost anywhere from $25-$100 per square foot for just the materials.

    Soapstone Countertops

    Soapstone Countertops
    European Stone Concepts

Soapstone has never had the widespread appeal of marble or granite, but it is a natural stone variety with many similarities. Soapstone’s color ranges from deep gray to black, with distinct white veining. Soapstone is highly heat and stain resistant, but it is more prone to scratching than marble, granite, or quartzite.

Many people still prefer soapstone because it is warmer and softer than other natural stones, and many scratches and nicks can be oiled away. Soapstone costs $70-$120 per square foot, including labor and materials.

    Sintered Stone

    Sintered Stone
    Ollin Stone

Sintered stone countertops are a relatively new addition to the kitchen countertop category. This is an engineered surface made from a combination of natural materials such as quartz, feldspar, and porcelain. These are formed and compressed at extremely high temperatures. The result is a countertop material that is highly durable to scratches, stains, and nicks. It is also heat-resistant and can be kept clean with only water and soap.

Sintered stone has a highly uniform appearance, with little variation in color and texture across its surface. It is available in large slab sizes, which reduces the need for seams. Sintered stone is relatively inexpensive, costing $60-$100 per square foot, including installation.

Chances of Downturn ‘Vanishingly Low,’ Wells Fargo Says

    [ad_1]

The US is likely to avoid slipping into a recession, according to Wells Fargo head macro strategist Michael Schumacher.

“The big question is: what’s the chance of a really nasty landing? So maybe growth tips a little below zero, does it go deeply negative?” he said in a CNBC interview on Tuesday. “We at Wells Fargo think that chance is vanishingly low at this point.”

If any, the factor most likely to spoil that view and knock the economy off its feet right now is the labor market, Schumacher said.

But the job market has shown signs of strength lately, with new job additions in January coming in well above estimates, and unemployment staying near historically low levels. However, Schumacher said a sudden shift could threaten the US’s chances of dodging a downturn.

“Labor markets are fickle and they can go from robust to really weak to unpleasant in the span of three to six months,” he said.

Schumacher continued: “The underlying economy is pretty good, but it’s not hot enough yet to spook the Feds. So [it’s] a good comfort zone for a lot of people.”

Still, not all economists are so optimistic. In a research note on Tuesday, David Rosenberg highlighted five inidicators that suggest the economy is not as strong as many think.

  • Salt Saunas: Benefits Of Salt In Spa Treatments

Salt Saunas: Benefits Of Salt In Spa Treatments

    [ad_1]

Think your spa has experienced every trend? It’s time to explore the latest in wellness: salt halotherapy (or salt therapy). For spa professionals, introducing salt saunas could set your services apart. But it’s not just about following trends; understanding the real benefits of these salt-infused retreats is crucial. Do they offer true value to your Clients, or are they just a passing fad? Along with these newer therapies, we’ll also discuss scientifically proven salt treatments, like salt scrubs, to give you a comprehensive view. Let’s dive in to find out more about “salty” sanctuaries.

What Is Halotherapy? | Benefits Scrubs & Other Salt TreatmentsCan Everyone Enjoy Salt Treatments? | Installing A Salt Sauna

    What Is Halotherapy?

Halotherapy, commonly known as salt therapy, is a wellness practice that involves breathing air infused with fine salt particles. Its roots can be traced back to the natural salt mines and caves in Eastern Europe, where European monks first observed that patients treated in salt caverns experienced faster healing. But the most pivotal moment in the history of salt therapy occurred in the 19th century when Polish physician Felix Boczkowski noticed that miners working in the salt mines had remarkably good respiratory health, despite their dusty work environment. This led to the hypothesis that inhaling salt-infused air had beneficial health effects, inspiring the contemporary concept of salt saunas and the opening of the first health facility in a salt mine in 1839.

In a salt sauna, or halotherapy chamber, the concept of inhaling salt-infused air is recreated in a controlled environment. There are two main types of salt saunas:

    Active Salt Rooms

These rooms are equipped with a device called a halogenerator. This machine grinds salt into fine particles and disperses them into the air of the room. This method is more active in that it artificially creates the salt-infused atmosphere found in natural salt caves.

    Passive Salt Rooms

Passive salt rooms are more about replicating the aesthetics and feel of a natural salt cave. They don’t use a halogenerator but are instead decorated with various types of salt, like Himalayan pink salt. The ambiance is set for relaxation and meditation, offering a serene environment that resembles the natural salt caves.

What Are The Benefits Of Salt Saunas?

The principle behind both types of salt saunas involves breathing in air that is saturated with tiny salt particles. Functional medicine specialist Melissa Young, MD tells Cleveland Clinic that there is not a “mountain” of scientific facts but a lot of anecdotal evidence. “Sometimes, it can be frustrating that there aren’t enough well-designed studies looking at a particular treatment or the different study outcomes can be conflicting,” explains Dr. Young. “But that doesn’t mean there isn’t a potential benefit to that treatment.”

This treatment has been associated with several health benefits:

    • Skin Rejuvenation: Regular exposure to the unique microclimate within a salt sauna has been said to promote healthier, more radiant-looking skin.
    • Stress Reduction: The tranquil environment of salt saunas is ideal for relaxation and is said to help reduce your stress levels.
    • Respiratory Health: Inhaling salt particles is thought to thin mucus and improve lung function, potentially helping people with respiratory conditions.
    • Skin Health: Salt’s anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties have been said to soothe the look of inflamed skin.
    • Improved Circulation: There are suggestions that salt therapy can enhance blood circulation.

While the scientific evidence for the health benefits of salt saunas remains limited, Himalayan salt stone massage has emerged as a rejuvenating practice that spa professionals can confidently offer to their Clients. Keep reading to find out the benefits.

    Scrubs & Other Salt Treatments

In the realm of skin care, salt serves as an effective exfoliating agent to buff and polish the skin for a smoother-looking appearance. Salt scrubs are renowned for their gritty particles, making them ideal for smoothing tougher skin areas like the feet and elbows. During facials, it’s used to gently polish the complexion, and in body treatments, it helps to smooth and rejuvenate the skin while promoting relaxation and improved circulation.

At Eminence Organic Skin Care, we recommend our Stone Crop Revitalizing Body Scrub that transforms into a luxurious, creamy foam. It is formulated with mineral-rich sea salt and hydrating stone crop to illuminate and refine your Client’s skin.

While the health benefits of salt saunas may still be under scientific scrutiny, the effectiveness of salt scrubs used in treatments (like Himalayan salt massage therapy) is well recognized. A Himalayan salt stone massage is a unique therapeutic experience that utilizes the natural properties of Himalayan salt, a type of rock salt rich in minerals like magnesium, calcium and potassium. This salt, known for its distinctive pink hue, is extracted from the Himalayan Mountain range stretching across several South Asian countries. Estheticians strategically place warm stones on various body points, including the legs, back and feet and gently glide them over the skin. This massage not only offers the physical benefits of exfoliation and pain relief but also enhances the emotional well-being of your Clients, making it a valuable addition to your spa’s treatment menu.

    Can Everyone Enjoy Salt Treatments?

While salt saunas and salt treatments can be a beneficial wellness treatment for many, they are not universally suitable as they depend on individual health conditions and personal tolerance. It’s always recommended that your Clients consult a healthcare professional, especially for those with specific health conditions, before trying new wellness treatments.

    Who Should Avoid Salt Saunas?

    Those with:

    • High blood pressure
    • Heart conditions or cardiovascular concerns
    • Respiratory conditions such as asthma or bronchitis
    • Skin conditions or open wounds
    • Claustrophobia or anxiety
    • Compromised immune systems
    • Those who are pregnant
    • Those who tend to experience dizziness

Who Should Avoid A Himalayan Salt Stone Massage?

Himalayan salt massages are best avoided for those with:

    • Severe skin conditions
    • High blood pressure
    • Kidney disease

Should I Implement A Salt Sauna?

Implementing salt saunas in your spa can be an intriguing and potentially beneficial addition to your spa, but there are several factors to consider for a successful integration.

    Challenges & Considerations

When considering adding salt saunas to your spa, there are several key aspects to think about:

    • Space Requirements: Assess the space needed for installation. Salt saunas require a dedicated area that can accommodate the sauna structure while also ensuring comfort and safety for users.
    • Maintenance: Regular maintenance is crucial to ensure the longevity and effectiveness of the salt sauna. This includes cleaning the salt surfaces and managing the humidity levels to prevent corrosion.
    • Cost: Consider the initial investment, which includes the sauna unit, salt walls or blocks and any additional features like a halogenerator.
    • Training For Spa Staff: Your staff should be well-trained in halotherapy, including its benefits and ideal candidates. Operational training on safe sauna management and maintaining optimal conditions is also crucial.

Remember, the success of integrating a salt sauna into your spa hinges on well-informed planning, strategic execution and clear communication with your staff and Clients. Consulting with seasoned professionals in this field can offer invaluable insights and guidance.

    Our Final Verdict

We give the All About Vibe Custom Shape Pillow a rating of 4.9 out of 5 stars.

    Quality: 5/5

    Image Reproduction: 4.8/5

    Comfort: 5/5

    Material: 5/5

    Value: 5/5

As a dog mom, I always have my pup in mind when it comes to decorating. Having various memorabilia and reproductions of her adorable face is a common theme in my home! A pillow is definitely on the list of things I need my dog’s face on. A pillow is something I can travel with and remember my sweet pup no matter where in the world I am.

However, finding a good quality pillow isn’t always the easiest thing. Not all companies are able to reproduce photographs well, and not all pillows are soft and comfortable. All About Vibe takes this desire to a whole new level by offering custom-shaped pillows rather than just slapping a photo on a square. This makes each pillow one-of-a-kind and created just for you.

Many of my pet-parent friends share the same sentiment, so a unique gift like this is equally on the agenda for birthdays and holidays!

    Overview

All About Vibe Custom Shape Pillow - preview of the custom design

These pillows are unlike others in the market, predominantly because they are custom-shaped to your photograph!

    Pricing

The price ranges from $15 to $80, depending on the size selected.

This makes their pillows more expensive (on average) than those of many standard competitors, but unlike those of other companies in the industry, these pillows are not square or rectangular. They are custom-shaped! The price feels more justified as a result of this fact.

    Sizes

    The sizes offered are:

    • Keychain 4”
    • Ornament 4”
    • Mini 10”
    • Small 16”
    • Medium 22”
    • Large 30”

Make note that the above are approximate sizes, as the pillows are cut and shaped based on the image you want reproduced.

All About Vibe Custom Shape Pillow - custom pillow on sofa

    Material

All of the pillows are made of ultra-soft velvet polyester fabric. They are soft and well-stuffed, squishy and comfortable!

The pillow is machine-washable; just be sure to use a cold cycle to preserve the vibrant colors.

    Image Reproduction

The background is extracted and your pet is set on white. Images are reproduced on both sides of the pillow. For quality, clear images, the reproduction is top-notch! The colors are vibrant and beautiful, and your pet is nice and sharp!

The best photographs to use are those that show your pet’s whole body, whether they are sitting, standing, or lying down! That’s because the way the pillow is custom-cut per photograph, it makes more sense to see your pet’s legs and cute paws.

However, images of all-white animals where there is only subtle detail in the coat have a bit of a more challenging time being reproduced (I noticed this in my primarily white dog, but more on this when I talk about my personal experience). This being said the pillow is stunning, and it’s not a deal breaker at all – printers can only do as much as they can!

All about vibe pillow side by side

    Shipping

The pillows are made in Chicago, Illinois, and take about three to five business days to make. Shipping rates range from $5.95 for standard shipping, $14.95 for priority shipping, and $39.95 for expedited shipping.

    Warranty and Guarantee

All of the pillows come with a lifetime guarantee! This means that if your pet damages the pillow, All About Vibe will send you a replacement.

If you’re unhappy with the pillow for any reason, All About Vibe has a 100% Satisfaction Guarantee, so they will work with you diligently to ensure you love your pillow.

    In Summary

    Pros

    • Custom-shaped one-of-a-kind pillows
    • You can use any image you want
    • Various sizes available
    • Retouching included
    • High-quality material that is soft and comfortable

    Key Features

All About Vibe Custom Shape Pillow - close up of the pillow

    Fully Custom

The pillow is truly a custom process – all pillows start from raw materials and are hand-done in the USA to match the photo uploaded. The pillow is shaped based on the submitted photograph, so unless two people submit the same image, each product is unique!

I cannot stress how fantastic this is, as you aren’t stuck with a standard square or rectangle shape anymore. This also makes the pillows so much more huggable.

    Quality

The pillow feels super soft, squishy, and brilliantly made. The material (velvet polyester) is great, and the image quality is very high. The pillows are also relatively durable and can be machine-washed easily.

It’s not too easy to print an image onto fabric like that, and All About Vibe has figured out a great way to do it.

    Various Sizes Available

There are six options in sizes available, with custom sizes possible if you reach out to customer service. Of the six sizes, this makes excellent gift or decor options for any room.

    Reproduce Any Photograph

You can have any photograph you love turned into a pillow – whether it’s a cell phone snap or something from a professional camera. This opens the door to endless possibilities.

    Retouching Included

Retouching is included (within reason, of course!) – you can leave notes when ordering on what you want to be removed. Common requests include removing leashes, collars, and stuff like that! So you don’t need to worry about a pesky eyesore in your favorite photo.

Is the Custom Shape Pillow a Good Value?

Priced at $15 for the 4” keychain or ornament pillow all the way to $80 for the 30” pillow, some might consider the prices to be on the higher side in comparison to competitive companies. With free shipping not being an option, that might be another thorn for some people.

However, I will be completely honest with you: this is the highest quality pillow I have ever gotten from any custom company. It is beautiful, perfectly stuffed, and feels so soft. More importantly, however, is that my dog looks awesome on it. I would say it is worth the price, especially since I can already feel that this pillow will last a lifetime.

On that note, the lifetime guarantee also makes this pillow worth every penny. You can get a replacement should something happen to it! All of this makes this pillow an excellent value.

Our Experience With All About Vibe

My pup Lorelei is eight years old as of this January, and we have been inseparable for all of the years she’s been with me. This dog is my world, and so much of my home reflects that! I love my memorabilia with her, from photo prints to mugs.

I (surprisingly) did not yet have a pillow with her face on it, so I was very excited about what All About Vibe offers. Especially as I have a few weeks of work trips coming up that my little one cannot come to, and this pillow might be something that helps the separation on my end a lot! The fact that the pillow is shaped based on my dog just makes it that much more special.

Creating the pillow is as easy as possible – just upload the photo (it must be JPG or PNG, but that’s pretty common!), add editing notes (I asked for the leash to be removed), and then select the size. There is a mock-up that shows an approximation of what the image will look like, but since I wanted the leash taken out, it wasn’t too accurate – but I trusted the process!

When my pillow arrived, I was blown away. The pillow was shaped so beautifully, matching my dog’s perky ears! Honestly, that is probably my favorite part, as those ears are the most prominent characteristic. The fabric is so soft, velvety, and luscious; it feels very high quality. The stuffing was also the perfect amount, not too firm but not too soft that the pillow would lose its shape. The seams are excellently done as well; I can truly feel the quality that was put into this product.

My only (minor) comment is that because the pillow can only be done on white, my dog got lost in the image a little bit – there was a lack of contrast, which I think those with white dogs should be mindful of. We lost a bit of detail in her coat in the reproduction. That being said, I am still absolutely obsessed with my pillow – this is probably my favorite pet-centric item I own now!

    Conclusion

From your own home decor to a fantastic gift for loved ones, the custom pillow from All About Vibe is a brilliant idea. Your beloved pet can forever be memorialized in a soft and comfortable pillow, which can be put in any room of the house or taken with you during travels. I can’t think of anything better!

AHMM to transform office into co-living space next to Barbican estate

    [ad_1]

Developer HUB and investor Bridges Fund Management have revealed plans to convert a 1950s office building in London into Cornerstone, a co-living residential scheme designed by Allford Hall Monaghan Morris.

Located on the edge of the Barbican estate, the Cornerstone project will draw from the iconic Barbican architecture to transform 45 Beech Street into 174 co-living residences along with street-level commercial spaces and amenities.

“Building on the success of our previous London projects with HUB, we are joining forces again to transform an underloved office building in the heart of the city,” Allford Hall Monaghan Morris (AHMM) director Hazel Joseph said.

Elevation view of Cornerstone by AHMM in London
AHMM has revealed plans for a co-living retrofit next to London’s Barbican estate

AHMM’s proposal aims to re-use as much of the building’s existing structure and facade as possible, taking a “retrofit-first approach” to minimise the need for new building works.

The studio will also primarily work within the geometric parameters defined by the original envelope, while updating the rectilinear language to create uniform apertures for each co-living apartment.

Referencing the Barbican estate, a series of arched, double-height extrusions will be introduced across the crown of the building to house additional co-living apartments.

Barbican context and facade of Cornerstone by AHMM in London
The design will adapt the existing building’s form and insert a series of arched spaces at the top

“The architectural approach has been carefully considered, responding sensitively to the much-loved Barbican context, completing the northern frontage of the estate,” Joseph said.

The arches will be partially set back from the building’s facade and lined with an asymmetric patchwork of glazed and tile panels underneath the curved overhangs.

At street level, warm red panel accents will contrast against the building’s neutral concrete finishes to highlight commercial and collective functions.

The scheme will integrate a public cafe, a co-working space and community-focused amenities at its lower levels to improve the public realm for those who live and work in the area.

“The existing structure of 45 Beech Street will be re-used and extended, creating a new residential community with shared amenities and breathing new life into the local streetscape,” Joseph explained.

street level activation of Cornerstone by AHMM in London
At street level, new commercial and public amenities will seek to activate the ground plane

According to HUB and Bridges Fund Management, AHMM’s proposal was developed in collaboration with the community – including Barbican residents – who were consulted through a series of workshops and events.

A website was also established to solicit viewpoints about the redevelopment, reiterating the design vision to establish a “vibrant community” that will adapt the original building and holistically contribute to the neighbourhood.

AHMM was established in 1989 by Simon Allford, Jonathan Hall, Paul Monaghan and Peter Morris in London. The studio has previously converted a 1930s block into New Scotland Yard’s headquarters in London and completed a mixed-use building in Southwark with interlocking flats.

Also adjacent to the Barbican estate, Diller Scofidio & Renfro’s proposal for a pyramidal music centre was recently scrapped when the City of London Corporation revealed its plans for a “major renewal” of the Barbican.

AI Drugs Only Years Away, Predicts Deepmind CEO

    [ad_1]

One of the foremost figures in AI thinks prescription drugs designed by AI could reach clinical testing in a few years.

“I think we are very close,” Hassabis said when asked about whether AI was close to being capable of helping cure a major disease like Alzheimer’s or a cancer. “I would say we’re a couple of years away from having the first truly AI-designed drugs for a major disease, cardiovascular, cancer.”

“We’ve just signed big deals with Big Pharma and on real drug programs. And I expect in the next couple of years, we’ll have AI-designed drugs in the clinic, in clinical testing,” he added. “And that’s going to be an amazing time. And that’s when people will start to really feel the benefits in their daily lives in really material and incredible ways.”

Clinical trials help assess if a new drug or device is safe and effective for human use. Drugs that make it to the clinical testing phase of development can still take years to reach the market, if they do so at all.

While some experts say AI can help accelerate the drug discovery process and offer patients personalized care, they also warn of the risk of bias if these models aren’t trained on diverse data sets.

AI doesn’t always get things right, as Google knows. Hassabis recently spoke of Google DeepMind’s fiasco with its Gemini AI image generator. After users pointed out it created historically inaccurate images, including racially diverse images of the Founding Fathers and Nazis, Google paused Gemini’s ability to generate images of people last week.

“That, which is a well-intended feature, was applied, it turns out, too bluntly,” Hassabis said of the image generator while speaking at the Mobile World Conference in Barcelona. “We care of course about historical accuracy and so we’ve taken that feature offline while we fix that, and we hope to have that back online in very short order.”

    Our Final Verdict

We give Dogo App a rating of 4.9 out of 5 stars.

    Quality: 5/5

    Variety: 5/5

    Communication: 5/5

    Ease of Use: 5/5

    Training Efficacy: 5/5

    App Reliability: 4.9/5

As much as we wish our dogs could come to us with all the knowledge of good behavior, this is not the case! Training is a lifelong commitment, and training itself is the difference between a dog built for success and a dog set up for failure. As pet parents, we want our dogs to succeed in life and get as much fulfillment out of it as possible!

Finding the right trainer, regiment, and time for classes can be a real hassle (and is often why dog parents are deterred from involving themselves with training). A slew of hack trainers in the market use aggressive and negative tactics to scare dogs into submission. An actual positive reinforcement trainer isn’t simple to find because this is not a quick-fix solution, but we owe it to our dogs to treat them right.

The Dogo App is revolutionizing the way we think of dog training and putting the trainers in the palm of our hands. An hour lunch break can now become a training session, helping curb bad behaviors and encouraging better ones. Focused on positive reinforcement, the Dogo App trains you just as much as it trains your dog! It is an entire philosophy that builds bonds and trust while getting Fido to stop chewing your shoes. Win/win, right?

    About Dogo

dogo app - sit and stay lesson for lorelei

The Dogo App is a personalized dog training app that lives conveniently on your cell phone so you can train anywhere anytime! Unlike dog training books or preset online courses, the Dogo App offers a questionnaire to get to know your pup better – and tailor the training to your dog’s needs. The app is supposed to be a complimentary addition to dog ownership, including other valuable features such as weight tracking, vaccination reminders, feeding schedules, and more. The idea is that it is quick and easy to open up a training plan and follow it!

Unlike many corporate services that wedge into the pet industry, the Dogo App was inspired by one special dog: Udra. When Dogo App founders Rasa and Tadas adopted Udra, they enrolled in puppy schools, watched YouTube videos, read up on training, and the like. The two saw an opportunity to streamline this process and make it fun rather than tedious, so the Dogo App was born! Rasa, a veterinary doctor, and Tadas, a software developer, worked together to bring the concept to fruition.

To this day, Dogo App partners with veterinarians, dog trainers worldwide, and other professionals to bring about as much dog knowledge as possible. You can tell that dog owners built the Dogo App for dog owners, as every aspect of the program revolves around pet care.

    dogster paw divider

    Overview

    Pricing

The Dogo App is a subscription service that can be paid quarterly, monthly, or weekly. The app costs $49.99 every three months, $29.99 monthly, or $9.99 weekly!

New users are often met with a 50% off code for the first week, first month, or first three months (billed at the standard rate beyond that).

Each pricing tier includes the same perks, such as unlimited trainer feedback and lesson plans, unlimited vaccine and weight tracking, up to five dogs registered, five family members registered, a dog clicker and whistle, and a digital certificate of completion.

    Lesson Plans

Upon signing up for the Dogo App, you are given a questionnaire to help curate your lesson plan based on what you and your dog may need. This ranges from walking nicely on a leash, foundation commands (such as sit, stay, down, place, etc.), tricks, no biting, and so much more.

Once the questionnaire is complete, lesson plans will populate in your app under your account. You can flip through and select what lesson you want to work on that day.

Each lesson plan in the app includes an estimate of the duration of time for your dog to learn the command or lesson, an instructional video, a step-by-step guide, a timer for when you start the lesson, and a virtual clicker tool to help with your training. Once you mark the lesson as complete, some questions will appear – based on your answers, more options present themselves (such as trying a different lesson, re-doing the lesson, and more).

    Ease of Use

The app is incredibly straightforward to grasp, with buttons for everything you need. The instructional videos assist in your daily lessons, and you also have contact with your assigned trainer. All in all, pretty fool-proof!

    Communication With a Trainer

If selected to work with a trainer, you have access to a certified professional during your subscription to Dogo App. Every month includes a certain number of videos to upload for feedback from the trainer and a messaging option to talk with your trainer. You can send your assigned trainer videos and have them critique and encourage your progress.

    Additional Features

Dogo App has several features outside dog training that make pet ownership easier. This includes:

    • Schedule and activity tracker
    • Health reminders (vaccinations, vet appointments, grooming appointments, etc.)
    • Weight tracker
    • Games for your dog
    • Informational articles on every aspect of pet ownership

    Key Features

Dogo App side by side 2

The features you can find on the Dogo App set it apart in the training market; there isn’t anything quite like it.

    Mobile Interface

The mobile interface means you have no excuse not to train – a dog trainer is in your pocket! The interface also has a clicker and whistle as tools.

    Available in Multiple Languages

The Dogo App is available in 12 languages, so many can enjoy its benefits.

    Entire Household Can Integrate

Each account allows up to five family members to join, so training can remain consistent for your dog. A big part of training success is ensuring everyone is on the same page; otherwise, your pup will get mixed signals.

    Positive Reinforcement Training

All of the lessons are positive-focused, rather than negative. Multiple scientific studies on animal behavior and training retention have shown that positive reinforcement training works significantly better than negative reinforcement training.

Positive reinforcement training is when your dog is rewarded for good behavior (with treats, praise, and toys) and ignored when they demonstrate bad behavior. Dogs are more likely to repeat good behavior because of the positive reward than to continue with bad behavior.

dogo app - sit and stay lesson

Lessons are Customized to Your Needs

Because of the questionnaire that is required to sign up, the entire lesson plan is customized to your needs. After each lesson, the app considers your feedback to add or remove lesson plans.

    Feedback From Professional Dog Trainers

If selected (which is highly recommended!) you get paired up with a professional dog trainer. As the dog owner, you can submit videos of training sessions for feedback and have an open chat with your assigned trainer.

    Built-In Pet Care Reminders

Alongside training, the Dogo App also serves as a pet-care aid, offering a platform to schedule vaccination and grooming reminders, keep track of care appointments, and more.

    Clicker and Whistle In-App

If you don’t have a physical clicker or can’t whistle, the app has both sounds available.

Educational Articles on Website and App

As an additional resource, the Dogo App has many articles to read about dog behavior, care, nutrition, and so much more. These articles are available on the website’s Blog page or within the app itself.

    dogster paw divider

Is the Dogo App a Good Value?

The average cost of group training classes is around $150 – $300 per six classes/six weeks. In these classes, you have to divide your time with other dogs. Private training sessions can easily reach into the $1,000 range.

The Dogo App is $49.99 every three months, $29.99 monthly, or $9.99 weekly and offers the same kind of curriculum you’d find in most dog training classes, except that you get to skip over what your dog already knows and do what your dog needs to learn next.

Whether or not the Dogo App is a good value is quite obvious here! You will not only save a lot of money, but you get to take a “class” every day, still have access to a dog trainer, and have each lesson personalized to you and your dog.

Our Experience With the Dogo App

My dog Lorelei is about 8 years old now (this is a best guess, as she came from the animal shelter) and there are still certain behaviors that we need to tighten up on. I don’t work a normal 9-to-5 schedule, it changes daily – so consistent training classes are a bit of a no-go for us because I can’t keep to the same time each day! The Dogo App sounded like a great solution for an unconventional schedule.

Upon registering, I was asked questions about my dog, such as her age. Equally, behavior questions about potty training, leash walking, biting, and of the sort started flowing as well. My answers began to narrow down the lesson plan! My dog is long potty trained and doesn’t bite, but isn’t perfect on a leash and some foundation work isn’t as solid as it used to be.

The last question asked if I wanted to have a dog trainer assigned to me, to which I selected “yes” and was assigned Jenny. I was given her photo and bio, so it felt a lot more personal!

As soon as the questionnaire ended, I was shown my lesson plan right off the bat along with an estimate of how long the program is (in my case, 21 days). The breakdown was thorough, even before I signed up for the subscription! Once the subscription process was finished, I was emailed a direct link to download the app. My link was personal, so as soon as I downloaded the app through that email, I was logged in (super nifty).

Right away I dug into the lesson plans. Before the lesson even started was a kind of pop quiz question that tested my training knowledge, a bit of a fun game! Once the lessons opened, each one that I was given for my pup (as well as some bonus idea lessons that I didn’t select, but the algorithm figured I might be interested in. It was right!) opened to a video example, a lot of details (including information on what Lorelei will learn – and what I will learn), and a timespan to work under. When I started a lesson, a timer would appear for the preset duration of time it should take!

The lessons were positive-based with lots of rewards and easy to follow. They made logical sense, and I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly my dog took to them.

At the end of each lesson I was presented with questions that revolved around our success rate (or lack thereof) and options would adjust based on my responses. I liked the consistent inquiries because I could tell that, once more, the algorithm was tailored just for us. I could always upload a video to my assigned trainer or contact her for help.

The additional tools in the app (conveniently located in the tabs at the bottom of the screen) make Lorelei’s daily ownership easier as well – I could record and monitor her weight, put in any appointments as reminders, and so much more. The training streak is also a nice feature, makes you feel pretty accomplished by training every day! All in all, Lorelei responded very positively to this news activity we do daily, and I couldn’t be happier with that.

It’s very convenient to be told what to do rather than trying to figure it out alone. Although it has only been a short time so far, I can see how much my dog has already improved – and will only continue so!

    Conclusion

In conclusion, the Dogo App fits perfectly into the modern lifestyle because of its convenient phone applications. Use it to train your dog whenever the day grants you some extra time! The lessons are easy to follow with video instruction and target the specific behaviors you need your furry best friend to know.

The app also removes the need to trial and error many dog trainers to find what works for you. With positive reinforcement training, your bond with Fido will grow even stronger than before. All in all, a brilliant service!

  • IVF Helps ‘Breed Great Families’

    IVF Helps ‘Breed Great Families’

    [ad_1]

    • GOP Rep. Byron Donalds on Sunday affirmed the need for IVF for families across the US.
    • “It helps them breed great families,” the congressman said of IVF on NBC News.
    • Some Republicans have put some distance between themselves and fellow conservatives on the issue.

Last week, Alabama’s Supreme Court ruled that frozen embryos have the same rights as born, living children, quoting the Bible in their opinion.

Since then, Republicans nationwide have been scrambling to clarify their opinion on IVF, the fertility treatment that allows women to have multiple eggs fertilized outside the womb to better the chances of a successful pregnancy.

On Sunday, Rep. Byron Donalds of Florida took to NBC’s “Meet the Press,” where he stated that he fully supports IVF, which helps people “create great families, which is what our country desperately needs.”

“The IVF procedure is very important to a lot of couples in our country,” Donalds said. “It helps them breed great families. Our country needs that.”

Despite the support of IVF from conservative lawmakers like Donalds, 125 of his fellow House Republicans co-sponsored a bill to establish that life begins at conception with no exceptions for the procedure. The expensive and time-consuming procedure can include the discarding of some fertilized eggs.

Donalds is not among the 125 House members pushing for the bill, telling MSNBC that he wanted to “see the devil in the details.”

However, the congressman’s comments reveal the wide scope of GOP reproductive theories, oscillating from “adoption is an option” on the subject of abortion to the desire to “breed great families” with IVF.

“I believe, as President Trump has also said, we really want the Alabama legislature to make sure that that procedure is protected for families who do struggle with having children,” Donalds said during his interview.

Last week, former President Donald Trump spoke of the need for IVF availability on his Truth Social platform.

“We want to make it easier for mothers and fathers to have babies, not harder!” the former president wrote. “That includes supporting the availability of fertility treatments like IVF in every State in America.”

After the conservative-leaning Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, it escalated the stakes of issues involving abortion and family planning as individual states now play the paramount role in governing reproductive rights.

Republicans have largely struggled to counter Democratic messaging on abortion rights, with the issue playing a major role in a slew of races across the country since the 2022 midterms, when Democrats performed better than expected in what was forecasted by some to be a GOP “red wave” election.

Even in a conservative state like Kentucky, Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear, a moderate, effectively campaigned on the issue last year by needling his GOP opponent over past support for a strict abortion ban without exceptions for cases involving rape or incest.

Beshear was reelected to a second term by 5 points in a state that Trump had won by 26 points in 2020.

Causes, Signs & Treatment – Dogster

    [ad_1]

When a dog’s thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones, a condition called hypothyroidism occurs. Middle-aged and older dogs are most commonly affected. Thyroid hormones help regulate many internal functions, such as metabolism and heart rate. When these hormones are low, vital functions are impaired and signs develop. Fortunately, with early detection and treatment, most hypothyroid dogs have a normal life expectancy.

    dogster paw divider

    Causes of hypothyroidism in dogs

Lymphocytic thyroiditis, an immune-mediated condition, is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in dogs. It occurs when the immune system attacks and destroys the thyroid gland, resulting in significant inflammation and low hormone production. It is unknown why the immune system decides to attack the thyroid gland, but it is thought to be hereditary.

Hypothyroidism in dogs can also occur due to thyroid gland atrophy. During this process, the functional tissue of the thyroid gland is replaced by fat. Veterinarians also don’t know why this process occurs.

A pituitary gland tumor is another cause, but it is extremely rare. The pituitary gland is located at the base of a dog’s brain and is responsible for secreting thyroid-stimulating hormone. In dogs with a pituitary tumor, this process is impaired, and the thyroid gland is not stimulated. Therefore, thyroid hormones are not produced.

    Signs of hypothyroidism in dogs

Hypothyroidism causes numerous symptoms in dogs, which may include the following:

    • Weight gain despite a normal appetite
    • Fat accumulation around shoulders, neck and hind end
    • Lethargy
    • Dull hair coat
    • Slow hair regrowth
    • Flaky and/or thickened skin
    • Patches of alopecia (hair loss)
    • Slow heart rate
    • Cold intolerance
    • Recurrent skin and ear infections
    • Fertility issues
    • Reduced tear production (dry eye)
    • Nerve abnormalities

Dogs with hypothyroidism may have high cholesterol, high fat content and mild anemia on bloodwork.

How to treat hypothyroidism in dogs

Dogs with hypothyroidism require oral supplementation of a synthetic thyroid hormone called levothyroxine. This medication is given daily and is relatively inexpensive. The dose, which is determined by the dog’s weight, may change over time based on his response to treatment. Periodic bloodwork helps the veterinarian assess hormone levels and adjust the dose when necessary. Supplementation is required for the remainder of the pet’s life.

Since hypothyroid dogs are already prone to high cholesterol, switching to a low-fat kibble is beneficial. Omega-3 fatty acids also promote a healthier skin and coat. Your veterinarian can recommend the best type of food to meet your dog’s specific needs.

    Life expectancy

Hypothyroidism is not a curable condition. However, most healthy, hypothyroid dogs live long, happy lives with the proper monitoring and treatment. Dogs with additional health issues, such as heart disease or kidney disease, may have shorter lifespans due to the difficulty in managing hypothyroidism alongside concurrent illness.

If left untreated, hypothyroidism results in a poor quality of life, an increased risk of complications and a reduced lifespan. Early diagnosis ensures your pet receives the treatment he needs to be happy and healthy. If you notice any signs of hypothyroidism in your dog, bring him to the veterinarian for evaluation.
