What Is An Essence? The Skin Care Step You Didn’t Know You Needed

    [ad_1]

If you’re a skin care aficionado, facial essences are probably already on your radar. A K-beauty staple, these lightweight elixirs are the backbone of every multi-step skin care routine – and for good reason. They’re a game-changer for any and every complexion. Read on to learn about the skin care step you didn’t know you needed.

What Is An Essence & What Does It Do?

As Eminence Organics International Trainer Brian Goodwin says, “The easiest way to think of an essence is as a primer that helps all of your other leave-on treatments work better.” Essences are often described as a cross between a toner and serum. These fast-absorbing liquids are slightly more viscous than a toner and contain a high concentration of actives like a serum.

The easiest way to think of an essence is as a primer that helps all of your other leave-on treatments work better.

In a skin care routine, essences help maximize hydration and improve absorption of subsequent skin care products. Plus, they’re chock-full of beneficial ingredients that plump the skin and protect it against the drying effects of environmental stressors. Here is a closer look at the benefits of facial essences for the skin.

    Add Hydration & Moisture

The key to a healthy complexion is a strong skin barrier. When the skin’s moisture barrier is protected and functioning optimally, it works to keep in beneficial hydration and keep out harmful environmental irritants that cause dryness and premature aging. Essences support healthy barrier function by replenishing the skin’s moisture levels and providing long-lasting hydration.

K-beauty expert Alicia Yoon likens the skin to a sponge. When wet, it becomes more absorbent; when dry, it becomes cracked and brittle. She says: “When your skin is well-hydrated, it is healthier, stronger and functions better. Essences help your sponge-like skin fill up with necessary moisture for better skin health.”

    Plump Skin

With age, the skin begins to lose volume and fullness. As stores of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid decline (by up to 50% by age 40), once-plump skin can appear to deflate and sag. When the skin is hydrated and moisturized, it is stronger, more supple and — as Alicia says — has “happier, bouncier cells.” Essences contain humectants and emollients that draw in water, replenish moisture and in turn, give skin a plump and youthful appearance.

    Protect Skin

Essences also contain antioxidant-rich ingredients that fight free radicals and protect skin from the harmful effects of the environment. Exposure to pollution, blue light and UV rays can cause damage to skin cells that presents as dryness, inflammation and the visible signs of aging.

    Prep Skin

By enhancing skin health and hydration, essences prime the skin to better absorb subsequent skin care products. When your skin is hydrated, it can more easily soak up the active ingredients in your serums, oils and concentrates. As The Zoe Report describes, “The water basically chauffeurs substances like glycerin and hyaluronic acid (humectants) or shea butter and squalane oil (emollients) down to the inner layer of the dermis. Then it evaporates, leaving the good stuff behind to do its job.”

Watch this video to learn more about the benefits of using a facial essence:

Does A Facial Essence Replace A Toner?

You may wonder if an essence can simply replace your favorite toner. Really, it is a separate step and your skin will benefit from both a toner and essence in your routine. Toning provides a base layer of hydration that refreshes and balances your skin, while applying an essence delivers additional moisture and preps your complexion for the skin care steps that follow. A facial essence typically feels more robust than a toner and contains active ingredients that protect the skin and minimize the visible signs of aging.

Do I Still Need A Serum?

So, if an essence is more viscous and contains a higher concentration of actives than a toner, can it replace a serum? Again, the answer is: not quite. An essence is a delivery mechanism for even more concentrated serums, oils and concentrates. With its lightweight texture, an essence can deeply penetrate the skin and deliver beneficial ingredients where they are needed most. Additionally, serums, oils and concentrates are typically developed to target specific concerns and conditions and therefore deserve their own special place in a skin care routine.

When And How To Use An Essence

Now that you know that an essence is an additional step in your skin care routine, where does it fit? In general, we advise applying your skin care products in order of weight, starting with the lightest (your toner) and ending with the richest (your serum, oil or concentrate). Essences fit directly in the middle: They should be applied after toner and before your facial serums, moisturizer and SPF.

Here is how to apply one properly:

    1. Use after cleansing and toning your skin.
    2. Shake a few drops of essence into your palm.
    3. Warm the product between your hands.
    4. Gently press the essence into your skin (this minimizes friction and aids absorption).
    5. Follow the remaining steps in your skin care routine

    how to apply an essence

    Kombucha Microbiome Balancing Essence

You can easily add an essence to your routine with the Kombucha Microbiome Balancing Essence. This essence gently primes your skin and restores its natural balance. A blend of pre, pro* and postbiotics work in tandem to enhance luminosity, while key ingredients like white tea and jasmine flower improve the look of dry, dull skin for a healthy-looking glow.

    Birch Water Purifying Essence

Our Birch Water Purifying Essence is a lightweight essence that contains purifying birch water, snow mushroom and reishi mushroom. These ingredients restore moisture levels, increase elasticity and improve barrier function. Skin is left replenished, rejuvenated and prepped to absorb the benefits of skin care treatments that follow.

    11 Top Dog-Friendly Beaches – Dogster

    [ad_1]

You know the saying … a dog is a man’s (and woman’s!) best friend. So, it’s no surprise that pet parents not only love their furry friends at home, but they also enjoy taking them on vacation —especially trips that involve romps on dog-friendly beaches.

Are you looking for a dog-friendly beach to visit? From California to Florida, from the Redwood Forest to Gulf Stream waters, Dogster found these popular dog-friendly shorelines the entire family can enjoy.

    Dog-friendly beaches in California

    Carmel Beach

    Carmel-by-the-Sea, California

One of the things that dog owners love to hear is “off-leash” and this Central California beach with breathtaking views is just that. However, there are a few rules: Your pup must answer to voice cues and the leash must go back on when walking along the scenic pathway. Dog waste bags are available at the top of every stair access to the beach. Even the town is pet-friendly with an area to warm-shower your pup after the romp through the sand. Many businesses provide doggie treats and water as you shop, while some restaurants will seat your dog with you.

    Ocean Beach Dog Beach

    San Diego, California

This sunny SoCal dog beach is considered one of the first official leash-free beaches in the country. Ocean Beach Town Council’s Dog Beach Committee, created in 1972, continues to ensure that any and every dog breed is free to run and play off leash with the surfers and beach goers, having fun in the sun together. One way the committee does this is making sure members are always maintaining and improving Dog Beach so its legacy is forever protected.

    Dog-friendly beaches in Florida

Causeway Islands Park, Bowman’s Beach and Gulfside Beach (aka Algiers Beach)

    Sanibel Island, Florida

Located off the Gulf of Mexico, these dog-friendly beaches provide a place for the entire family to stay together — your fur-kid, too. The three beaches offer different amenities for you and your dog to enjoy, such as hiking trails, surrounding greenery and shell hunting. Rules include dogs being kept on a leashes that are no more than 8-feet and cleaning up after your dog. In town, there are many dog-friendly restaurants and accommodations to choose from. For a change of scenery, the island features several activities, including nature walks on three different trails in the nearby J. N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge and pet-friendly fishing charters.

Fort De Soto Park (Paw Playground)

    St. Petersburg, Florida

Fort De Soto is an island located at the entrance to Tampa Bay on Florida’s west coast. A park that once was used by the U.S. military is now a go-to for pet parents wanting to take their dog for a swim and play on the sand. The playground and beach offer separated fenced areas for large and small dogs and a redesigned beach area for both leashed and unleashed dogs. It’s common to see pups swimming in the Gulf of Mexico waters with their human parents and playing on more than 700 feet of shoreline. When done, it’s off to the pet cooling stations complete with dog-level water fountains and showers.

    Dog beaches in New England

    Block Island Beaches

    Narragansett, Rhode Island

All beaches on Block Island welcome leashed dogs year-round, as opposed to only during the off-season, which runs from Oct. 1 to March 31. Starting with the ferry ride from the mainland, dogs are welcome in this quaint New England community. Pups can walk 25 miles of trails and when done, the whole family can head over to one of several restaurants that are pet-friendly, too. And of course, when the waves of the Atlantic come calling, dogs are welcome to romp and play on the sand and in the ocean.

    Dog-friendly beaches in New Jersey

    Wildwood Dog Park and Beach

    Wild Wood, New Jersey

Open from dawn to dusk, this popular dog-friendly beach goes the extra mile in making pups and their owners know they are welcome. First, the added “dog” to its official name is a clue. Second, beachgoers are greeted with a 25-foot-tall fire hydrant adorned with dog paws and bones. Finally, the beach park provides clean up bags and fresh water for your dog. On the dog park side of the beach, unleashed pups can run and play to their hearts’ content.

    Longport Dog Beach

    Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey

Although some online blogs claim that this is one of the few beaches in New Jersey where leashes are not required, the Longport police department website promotes it as a beach where leashed dogs are welcome off-season. Doggie parents are asked to bring their own water and waste bag as the beach doesn’t provide trash service.

    Dog-friendly beaches North Carolina

    Caswell Beach and Oak Island

    New Brunswick Islands, North Carolina

Why visit just one dog-friendly beach when you have six to choose from? The New Brunswick Islands are located on the northeast corner of the state and provide several beaches that cater to dogs and their owners. While pup moms and dads relax in the sun, their furry kids can run to their hearts’ content on the sand and in the warm Atlantic Ocean. The islands also offer lots of dog-friendly bed and breakfast inns, hotels and vacation homes. Dog rules vary by beach, particularly during the popular summer months. But, after Labor Day to May 1, beach regulations relax with some dog beaches offering off-leash hours. Check the website for updates.

    Oak Island Park

    Oak Island, North Carolina

Leashed pups are allowed year-round on this beautiful, pet-friendly shoreline that stretches for miles. Unleashed pups are permitted Oct. 16 through March 15, or year round at the nearby dog park, in this vacation favorite and there are even several motels and hotels that welcome your fur-kid with open arms. People are required to bring their own waste bags and pick up after their pup.

    Dog-friendly beaches in South Carolina

    Sullivan’s Island

    Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina

This beach is one of several on the island that welcome dogs and their owners, as long as everyone is following the beach’s rules. Off-leash dogs are welcome from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. From 6 p.m. to 5 a.m. all dogs must be on a leash. The downside is canines are not allowed on the beach from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and a dog permit is required.

    Edisto Beach

    Edisto Beach, South Carolina

Found on the eastern coastline of the state, Edisto Beach is known for being a beach that gets overlooked by the general public, but only because it’s an hour outside of the more popular beach areas. It is only during the “summer months” — May 1 to Oct. 31 — that a leash is required. The rest of the year, dogs can be off leash as long as they respond to voice cues from their pet parents.

The owner of two pups — Mocha, a Weimaraner, and Kaika, a Terrier mix — Lisa Weyer says she loves to spend time with her dogs at both Heceta Beach and Seal Beach along Oregon’s coast. Lisa said although neither beach offers any dog-friendly amenities, there’s easy parking and miles of coastline, which keeps her pups busy and happy.

Beach days with your dog can be fun as long as you follow basic safety guidelines on both the water and the sand. Rules change throughout the year, so before visiting one of these dog-friendly beaches, check the city’s websites for updates to local regulations.

Are Kitchen Hardware and Lighting Supposed to Match?

    [ad_1]

The worlds of fashion design and interior design are closely related, especially in terms of aesthetics. They follow similar trends and style ‘rules’. For quite some time, fashion rules firmly stated that purses, belts and shoes should always match. But in recent years, that rule has been bent to the point of being considered, what the cool-kids might call, “basic”. Nowadays, a statement shoe or pop of rose-gold are displays of style-courage, and indicative of an individual’s willingness to make bold moves with their attire.

The US, China’s primary rival, has the second-largest navy in the world, with 296 ships, per a 2022 report by the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Though it is smaller than China’s People’s Liberation Army Navy, the US Navy is still widely considered the most powerful in the world today given its presence, partnerships, experience, and technology.

China, though, is determined to build a world-class military able to fight and win wars. While China already has the lead in terms of navy size, it continues to expand its naval force. The Congressional Research Service predicts that the country’s fleet will grow to as many as 400 vessels by 2025 and 425 by 2030. And it is also investing heavily in improved combat capabilities for its ships.

China has been strengthening its navy over the past decade to bolster its military presence around Taiwan, according to a March report by The Japan Times. The report stated that “increasing capabilities of Chinese warships” like destroyers is crucial to the country’s military plans.

China relies on its growing navy to enforce its will and advance its national interests in the East China Sea, South China Sea, parts of the Western Pacific, and potentially farther as its force grows and improves.

The Chinese navy’s growing fleet of destroyers is comprised of 41 active ships, which belong to eight classes, according to a 2022 estimate by military data site Global Firepower.

In addition to China’s newest class, the Type 055, there are six other locally made active destroyer classes: Type 052A, Type 051B, Type 051C, Type 052B, Type 052C, and Type 052D(L), per a 2018 report by CRS. Only one class, the Type 956E(M), is foreign-made.

Keep reading for a look at all eight of China’s destroyer classes. The classes are ranked according to when they were commissioned, from the most recent to the oldest.

  • A look at Queen Elizabeth’s beloved dog breed – Dogster

A look at Queen Elizabeth’s beloved dog breed – Dogster

    [ad_1]

Queen Elizabeth was rarely spotted without one of her royal Corgis by her side. Some sources say she relied on the Pembroke Welsh Corgis to make her feel more at ease in public and social situations, especially political meetings. Other sources report that the 30 Corgis that she cared for throughout her lifetime were descendants from a Corgi named Susan that Queen Elizabeth received for her 18th birthday. Queen Elizabeth is also credited for breeding the first Dorgi, a Corgi-Dachshund cross.

What we can all agree on: The Queen’s Corgis have impacted the public’s view of the dog breed, driving their popularity over the decades, and their connection to English monarchy.

    From herders to royal Corgis

Pembroke Welsh Corgis were bred to be herders, to move cattle. They are fearless, independent thinkers — an intelligent dog breed that picks up on skills and tricks easily.

“They are feisty little dogs,” says Linda Thompson, with the Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of America. Linda, who cares for four Corgis of her own, has watched the Pembroke Welsh Corgi rise in popularity since she started working for the Corgi club three decades ago. Then, the Corgi ranked in the 100s in AKC popularity, she says. In 2021, the Corgi was listed as number 11.

Linda attributes this popularity spike to their size. The Corgi weighs up to 30 pounds, which is acceptable for most apartment dog weight restrictions. Corgis can also thrive doing agility sports and herding on farms. “They are such a versatile breed,” Linda says.

Corgis are loyal and were the Queen’s true companions, Linda explains. One member of the PWCCA has family who lives in England and told Linda that they often saw the Queen walking around in the fields with her dogs.

“She was hands-on,” says the Queen’s former dog trainer Dr. Roger Mugford in an interview with CNN. The Queen would often drive her Corgi pack — on her own without security or staff — on the highway between Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace, he recalls.

She took them for walks and even picked up their poop, he adds.

However, when it comes to the Corgi’s heavy shedding, Linda says, she assumes that’s one area the queen did accept help to handle the hair cleanup.

Royal Corgis on the big screen

Corgis have been included in many shows and movies that feature royal life in England.

TV shows and movies that have featured royal Corgis include:

    • The King’s Speech (2010)
    • The Queen’s Corgi (2019)

Who will care for the Queen’s Corgis?

Multiple news outlets have reported that the queen’s Corgis, named Muick and Sandy, will live with the Duke and Duchess of York, Andrew and Sarah Ferguson. The Duke and Duchess are divorced but both live on the Windsor Estate and bonded with the Queen over their shared love of dogs.

Dr. Mugford says that the entire royal family are dog lovers, including Princess Ann, Prince Andrew, who has Terriers, and Prince William, who has a Labrador Retriever. Dr. Mugford is confident the Queen’s Corgis will be in good hands.

On Sept. 24, Linda will join other Pembroke Welsh Corgi lovers at the 2022 PSWCCA National Specialty in Wilmington, Ohio, where they plan to honor the Queen and her Corgis.

At The Rose House presents design at home of famed landscape architect

    [ad_1]

An exhibition of hand-crafted art and design pieces, including a seminal sculpture by Charles and Ray Eames, is on display at the former New Jersey home of 20th-century landscape architect James Rose.

At the Rose House is on show at the Ridgewood home that the late American modernist landscape architect designed and hand-built for himself and his family in 1953 and lived in for almost 40 years.

    At The Rose House exhibition
Pieces in the exhibition are displayed throughout the home as if they belong there

Organised by curatorial platform Object & Thing and furniture and interior design studio Green River Project LLC, the exhibition stemmed from Rose’s appreciation for craft and materials.

The show “emphasises the hand-made, beauty in nature and a sense of timelessness” according to the curators.

Living room of James Rose's Ridgewood home
Rose self-designed and hand-built the house, which features several Japanese design elements

Green River Project LLC founders Aaron Aujla and Benjamin Bloomstein, who have admired the landscape architect for some time, have produced a series of new designs based on his work.

Created in collaboration with a group of designers, these pieces include a side chair by both Bloomstein Industrial and Luck Carpentry, rice paper lamps from Preziosi Lighting and carved grooming items on shelves in the bathroom by Teague’s Path.

Ceramic pots displayed on wooden shelves
Artworks and designs were selected to reflect Rose’s appreciation for craft and materials

“The ease in which Rose expanded the home using ready-made materials was an early point of reference for our practice,” said Aujla.

“In particular, there is a kitchen with mahogany shelves and pegboard that we must have spent over 100 hours dissecting and referring back to over the last five years.”

Green River Project’s products are presented alongside the work of mid-century and contemporary designers, including Alvaro Barrington, Bode, Charles and Ray Eames, Louis Eisner, Hugh Hayden, Nancy Holt, Kiva Motnyk, Michele Oka Doner, Johnny Ortiz-Concha and Anne Truitt among others.

Clothing by Bose hung around the house
Clothing based on Rose’s personal style is hung in closets

The works are installed as if they belong in the rooms and garden, which – like many of Rose’s later projects – feature elements of Japanese design, including the exposed timber structure and shoji screens.

“[Rose] spent considerable amounts of time in Japan and became a Zen Buddhist,” said the curators. “This influence is evident in the Ridgewood house, especially on the upper floor, which contains a room for his daily mediation practice that The James Rose Center is currently restoring.”

Pieces on display include the Eames’ seminal 1943 Plywood Sculpture – the first time that this edition, which was made and released by Eames Office, is being presented in the US.

Among the designs created for the showcase are leather Adirondack chairs by Hugh Hayden, wood-fired micaceous pots by Johnny Ortiz-Concha and naturally-dyed framed textile works by Kiva Motnyk.

A selection of clothing by New York brand Bode, based on Rose’s “eccentric” personal style, is hung in the closets throughout the house.

Landscape paintings, rice paper drawings, flower vases, terracotta sculptures, and a screening of Nancy Holt’s 1975 film Pine Barrens that “portrays the New Jersey wilderness” also feature.

Green River Project LLC is also producing new editions of one of Rose’s lanterns to coincide with this exhibition.

These will be sold to benefit The James Rose Center – a non-profit landscape research and study foundation, which is based at the house and has preserved Rose’s legacy since his death in 1991.

“Rose was an impossible maverick, called by one author, ‘The James Dean of Landscape Architecture,’ but I think he would be very happy with the vision Green River Project LLC and Object & Thing have brought to his house,” said foundation director Dean Cardasis.

At the Rose House runs until 2 October 2022. This is the latest in a series of exhibitions organised by Object & Thing within the homes of notable 20th-century artists and architects, following presentations at the houses of Gerald Luss, Robert Dash and Eliot Noyes.

Other exhibitions that showcase the work of modernist designers include an exhibition of Le Corbusier’s tapestries in Manhattan.

  • Donald Trump Called Ron DeSantis ‘Fat’ and ‘Whiny’ in Private: Book

Donald Trump Called Ron DeSantis ‘Fat’ and ‘Whiny’ in Private: Book

    [ad_1]

    • Trump slammed DeSantis in private, wrote New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman in her new book.
    • Citing sources, Haberman wrote that Trump had called DeSantis “fat” and “whiny.”
    • He also said Chris Christie, another rival, had a “weight problem,” per Haberman’s book.

Former President Donald Trump has been making rude comments in private about Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, according to a new book by New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman.

In an excerpt from “Confidence Man: The Making of Donald Trump and the Breaking of America,” published by The Atlantic on Sunday, Haberman detailed a meeting she had in the summer with Trump at the latter’s golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey.

During the meeting, she spoke with Trump about Christie, one of his 2016 election rivals.

“I was compared to him? Why? I didn’t know I had that big of a weight problem,” Trump told Haberman, per her account. He also called Christie an “opportunist.”

Haberman also wrote that she had heard of Trump using similar terms to describe DeSantis. She also recalled learning from sources that Trump had called DeSantis “fat,” “phony,” and “whiny” while also taking credit for the latter clinching the governor’s seat in 2018.

Per the excerpt, Trump told Haberman that the question he most often received was whether he would be running for president again.

“The answer is, yeah, I think so. Because here’s the way I look at it. I have so many rich friends and nobody knows who they are,” Haberman wrote of Trump’s response.

She added: “Reflecting on the meaning of having been president of the United States, his first impulse was not to mention public service, or what he felt he’d accomplished, only that it appeared to be a vehicle for fame, and that many experiences were only worth having if someone else envied them.”

Representatives for DeSantis and Christie and an aide at Trump’s post-presidential press office did not immediately respond to Insider’s requests for comment.

DeSantis and Trump have been posited as leading contenders for the 2024 Republican presidential ticket, though neither has made a formal declaration about running in the next election.

In July, a DeSantis representative told Insider that DeSantis remains “focused on Florida and running for reelection as governor this year.” However, the governor has been boosting his political profile — launching a fundraising blitz that included selling a gold “Florida First Fighter” card that appeared to resemble the Trump Card.

DeSantis also has high-profile supporters, such as podcast host Joe Rogan, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, and billionaire and Trump megadonor Peter Thiel.

Trump has reacted harshly to the idea that DeSantis might be a potential competitor for the 2024 GOP ticket.

In July, the former president slammed “Fox & Friends” for reporting on polls that showed DeSantis taking the lead over him, accusing the show’s hosts of having “gone to the dark side.” Earlier this month, Trump took a swipe at DeSantis, sharing an Insider story about his polling lead over DeSantis via his Save America political action committee.

Rolling Stone also recently reported that Trump was irritated that DeSantis was stealing his limelight with a political stunt that involved two planeloads of migrants being flown to Martha’s Vineyard, a Democratic enclave.

Meanwhile, Trump also fat-shamed Christie on Truth Social after Christie gave an unflattering interview to ABC News’ “This Week” about the Mar-a-Lago raid.

  • Taurine In Dog Food | Sources of Taurine for Dogs

Taurine In Dog Food | Sources of Taurine for Dogs

    [ad_1]

Taurine is a sulfur-based amino acid that is one of the building blocks of protein, which is critical to your dog’s cardiovascular system, brain, eyes and immune system. Wondering if your dog needs a special dog food with taurine? Dr. Richard Hill, a board-certified veterinary nutritionist at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine, recommends a standard diet for all healthy dogs. Most don’t need a special diet, unless recommended by a veterinarian. He says the important thing for dog owners to know is that your pet’s diet must be complete and balanced.

    Sources of taurine

Like with humans, the main source of taurine for dogs is in their regular complete and balanced diet. Dr. Hill says a complete diet is one that contains all the essential nutrients to maintain a normal body weight or growth. This includes amino acids methionine and cysteine that automatically generate taurine. Taurine is not required in dog diets because pups can get it by getting enough methionine and cysteine in their food. The American Association of Feed Control Officials and National Research Council have a minimum recommendation for methionine and cysteine in dog food.

Your dog also gets taurine from the meat protein in his diet, and from eggs and seafood in his food.

So how do you know if your pet’s food is complete and balanced? It’s usually clearly marked on pet food packaging. Dr. Hill also urges dog owners to not pick food with the lowest protein content (unless your dog requires very few calories recommended by your veterinarian). Your best bet is to feed a diet that keeps your canine lean and healthy.

You can also get the amino acid taurine in a nutritional supplement specifically made for dogs. These come in powders, liquids or tablets. However, this should only be done under the recommendation of your veterinarian as you don’t want to oversupplement your dog. Breeds that need taurine in dog food

Dr. Julie Steller, a faculty member at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine, says some dog breeds may have more taurine-deficiency issues than others, but that research may be inconclusive. She says Golden Retrievers are overrepresented with DCM cases and are a dog breed known to have problems metabolizing taurine. Other dog breeds that have DCM issues include:

While these bigger dogs have had more issues with DCM, Dr. Steller says overall any canine is susceptible to the condition.

The history of taurine in dog food

Dr. Steller says for about 20 years prior to World War II, dog food was primarily meat based and in cans. When metal was needed for war, companies reverted to dry food, which was still primarily meat based. In the 1950s a machine called the extruder was introduced to pet food manufacturing, which made a nice crunchy kibble that required more starches. That began the trend of including less meat and more carbohydrates. Dr. Steller believes that was much to the detriment of the health of cats and dogs at the time. But now pet companies have reversed that trend and are adding more meat into their products and including essential nutrients, which ultimately gives standard pet food more sources of taurine.

Is grain-free food with taurine necessary?

Dr. Hill says no and urges dog owners to be cautious when giving pets grain-free food. Grain-free diets are primarily made up of lentils, peas, legume seeds and potatoes, which are not good sources of taurine for dogs. Natural sources of taurine are animal meats like beef, turkey, eggs or fish.

    Taurine in dog food research

Dr. Hill believes most pet foods sold in the United States are fine to feed your pets. He does think larger manufacturers tend to have more extensive research teams, which include veterinarians who are helping determine what ingredients and supplements are best for a dog’s body. Some companies don’t have the same research resources and may have more issues, but the veterinary nutritionist says mistakes can happen to any pet food maker.

The veterinary professor is also wary of false advertising and the use of cute names to lure pet parents to certain products. He believes if you see an advertisement that inflates or demonizes ingredients, that is a clear red flag.

Dr. Steller advises that her patients eat a standard diet of regular dry kibble or canned wet food. She doesn’t believe in fad diets, such as grain-free or raw, and says too much is unknown to feed them anything else. That said, she believes exceptions exist, and some animals do need a special diet, such as dogs with allergies.

Changing your animal’s food should always be done in consultation with your veterinarian, who will have her own thoughts about taurine and grain-free diets in regard to your specific dog’s nutritional needs. If you have concerns or need help with your dog’s diet, try consulting a board certified veterinary nutritionist, who specializes in nutritional management. They have the designation ACVN (American College of Veterinary Nutrition) after their name and a list of them can be found here. Also, when looking for a food for your dog, check to make sure that the dog food company works directly with veterinary nutritionists and does its own nutritional studies.

Be an advocate: know where taurine in dog food is coming from

The DCM scare affected sales of grain-free dog food in the United States. As a result, many grain-free only companies started manufacturing standard dog food, which means there is more variety than ever. However, if you are worried that your dog is not getting enough taurine in his diet, know that veterinarians can easily test a dog’s taurine levels to make sure a pet is not deficient.

Overall, Dr. Hill and Dr. Steller both believe positives can come out of any negative situation. There are now more resources and experts looking into the safety of pet food in the industry. Sometimes working out what went wrong can lead to changes that not only make the pet food industry safer, but the human food industry as well.

The bottom line is while researchers are still investigating if grain-free diets are the cause of DCM, most veterinarians agree that it’s better to be safe than sorry. Know what your animal is eating. Be an advocate for their health. With so many options, take the time to educate yourself so you can ensure your pet lives a long, happy life.
