New York studio Post Company has designed warm, wood-filled interiors for a boutique hotel in Aspen, Colorado, which offers a pared-back take on the Arts and Crafts style.
Mollie Aspen occupies a new timber-clad building designed by CCY Architects and developed and operated by HayMax in the mountain city’s downtown area.
With an open fireplace as a backdrop, the lobby lounge at Mollie Aspen features earth-toned furniture and a gridded wood ceiling
Post Company was tasked with creating the interiors for the 68-room hotel, combining contemporary Scandinavian and Japanese design elements for a serene take on Rocky Mountain luxury.
“Mollie is designed for those with a natural curiosity and appreciation for connection and offers visitors a unique, welcoming respite in the bustling mountain town,” said the hotel’s team.
An all-day cafe in the lobby serves pastries and beverages from a walnut-wrapped counter
An abundance of wood can be found throughout the different spaces, with numerous varieties creating a layered effect of different colours and grain patterns.
The timber is crafted into elements like gridded wall and ceiling panels with built-in lighting, which evoke an Arts and Crafts aesthetic, as well as fluted counterfronts and a range of furniture pieces.
Burl wood counters and displays present goods in the hotel’s retail space
The majority of the materials used in Mollie’s construction were sourced from the Western United States to reduce waste, according to the team.
Meanwhile, other accents like earthen ceramics, hand-dyed textiles and sand-casted brass add to the cosy atmosphere.
Guest rooms offer an even more pared-back take on the neutral decor palette
“These materials are incorporated throughout the hotel to mimic the area’s rough-hewn mountains while large windows frame views of the surrounding landscape and bring an abundance of light into the hotel,” said the team.
The lobby lounge is designed as a cosy gathering space for guests and the public, with a large open fireplace providing a backdrop.
Beige plaster walls and textured carpets complement the wood ceilings in the guest rooms
Chunky leather, velvet and boucle sofas and armchairs in a range of earthy hues form comfy conversation nooks.
At one end of the room, the black-topped bar spans the full width and is illuminated by a row of globe-shaped pendant lights suspended from thin brass bars.
Black leather furniture in the larger suites offers a contrast to the other furniture pieces and snowy mountain views
A repeated geometric pattern across the pale counter front is also found on door panels leading to other hotel areas.
An all-day cafe at the opposite end of the lobby serves pastries and an assortment of beverages from a walnut-wrapped counter, and the restaurant
Dark green tiles in the bathrooms match the spruce trees outside
In the adjacent retail space, burl wood counters and displays with curved edges, some of which are topped with glass vitrines.
On the third floor is a roof terrace with a bar and a spa pool set to open in Spring 2024, while a fitness facility and flexible meeting space are located at ground level.
The guest rooms continue the soft, neutral palette in a more pared-back style.
Beige plaster walls, textured carpets and green-grey curtains complement the wood ceilings and built-in furniture, while black leather chairs add contrast.
Mollie Aspen is located within a newly constructed building by CCY Architects
Dark green stacked tiles that line the bathrooms match the spruce trees outside and freestanding tubs beside the windows allow guests to enjoy the view while soaking.
“Guests are left with a sense of Aspen’s cultural and recreational history, providing a lens to appreciate its contemporary personality and influence,” the team said.
The building was constructed largely from materials sourced from the Western US
Arizona Republican lawmakers appear to be in full agreement: A guaranteed basic income is a disastrous idea.
The Arizona House of Representatives voted Thursday in favor of a bill that would prohibit guaranteed basic income programs in the state, despite Arizona grappling with the fourth-highest rate of homelessness in the nation.
No Democrat voted in favor of the bill. But the Republican majority voted unanimously.
Basic income programs, which offer segments of society no-strings-attached payments, are gaining traction across the nation as a way to address the wealth gap and reduce poverty.
The bill’s author, Republican Rep. Lupe Diaz, has compared such programs to socialism, calling the payments “unearned.” Diaz did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.
The legislation bans “any program where persons are provided with regular, periodic cash payments that are unearned and that may be used for any purpose.” It doesn’t include work or training programs.
The bill still needs to pass the state Senate before it can become law. The state Senate consists of 30 members, 16 Republicans and 14 Democrats.
Guaranteed basic income programs typically support qualifying families or individuals, often those living at or near the poverty line, with regular government payments for a set period. They are a more targeted version of a universal basic income, which gives funds to entire populations regardless of their income or other considerations.
Dozens of cities and states have toyed with various styles of no-strings-attached cash assistance in recent years.
A senior director at Point Source Youth, a national youth homelessness nonprofit that helped facilitate the Oregon program, told Business Insider that participants said they used the funds to obtain housing, enroll in school, and purchase cars.
Another program in Austin that gave $1,000 monthly payments to low-income families found that participants were “substantially more housing secure” one year into the program than when they enrolled. The report found that participants, on average, said they spent more than half of the payments they received on housing.
Yet despite the apparent success of the programs, some state lawmakers — largely Republicans who say the programs discourage recipients from working — are trying to ban them.
One basic income program in Harris County, Texas — where Houston is located — is under constitutional review by the state’s attorney general after a Republican state lawmaker requested a review. The Uplift Harris program is using $20.5 million of COVID-19 relief funds to support $500 monthly payments for low-income families.
Republicans in other states have also introduced bans similar to the one proposed in Arizona. In Iowa, Republican state Rep. Steve Holt introduced a bill to ban basic income programs last month, calling them “socialism on steroids.”
Another basic income ban in South Dakota passed through a committee 8 to 1 along party lines on February 5 and is now headed to the state senate.
The bill’s sponsor, Sen. John Wiik, said basic income programs are a “socialist idea” during a committee meeting on February 5.
“Guaranteed income programs, also known as basic income, undercut the dignity in earning a dollar, and they’re a one-way ticket to government dependency,” Wiik said in the hearing.
Whether your dog simply had a battery in his mouth or fully ingested it, Dr. Anna Robinson, a small animal veterinarian in Texas, says to take swift action. The first thing to do is to flush the dog’s mouth out with tepid water, then call your veterinarian.
“Depending on the age and type of the battery ingested, there isn’t really any first aid you can do, unless your dog immediately vomits up the battery whole and unchewed,” says Dr. Robinson.
Signs after dog ate battery
“Batteries contain a variety of toxic metals which can generate local electrical currents causing cell damage in the body,” explains Dr. Robinson. “They have an ‘acid’ that is caustic and burns cells it encounters.”
If your dog ate a battery, it is an emergency. Don’t try to induce vomiting. Instead, contact your vet immediately. Here are some other common signs:
“It is important to note that unlike other poisonings, inducing vomiting to attempt to remove batteries can make these effects worse,” she warns. “Veterinarians have also found that activated charcoal is not sufficient to bind out the toxins, which would otherwise be the go-to option.”
What to expect at the veterinarian
Your veterinarian will ask you to call a poison control line, which will assign you a case number and assist the veterinarian (either your regular vet or emergency vet).
The poison control line will ask:
For a credit or debit card number up front.
Who you are and whether you are a legal owner of the pet you are calling about.
For your pet’s signalment (breed, age, sex and if spayed/neutered or not).
If you’re in route to a facility.
What the pet’s current signs are. They may direct you to sign specific first aid based on your response.
The number, brand and age of batteries ingested.
Finally, the representative will give you a case number and contact information for your veterinarian to use.
Treatment plan
Expect your pet to stay with the veterinarian for the healing process, especially if the battery is lodged in the esophagus in either the throat area, around the heart or diaphragm.
“This instance will warrant endoscopic removal requiring a small camera to go through your pet so the battery can be cleanly and effectively removed,” says Dr. Robinson. “Regardless of the individual veterinarian’s skill and equipment, if the battery is deep enough, surgical removal may be attempted but this is very uncommon for esophageal foreign bodies.”
Because batteries can leak chemicals, if it reaches the lower gastrointestinal tract, surgical removal is typically recommended if any portion of a battery is seen on radiography.
Your dog may require in-hospital chelation therapy for heavy metal exposure, regardless of battery location and sign. Other services include pain management, gastrointestinal protectants and digital imaging monitoring for patients or for dogs who chewed batteries as things can get worse before they get better.
Choosing a paint color for your kitchen cabinets is a decision that will influence the tone and style of the entire space. Stark white kitchen cabinets are giving way to more earthy and organic cabinet colors in 2024 and beyond. Design of the kitchen and the look you want to achieve should determine the color you choose. This color should also reflect your personal preferences and tastes, as well as the atmosphere you hope to create in your kitchen.
There are excellent options for every aesthetic, from warm and cozy neutrals that serve as a backdrop for other architectural elements to bold, vibrant colors that stand out. Browse through these options to find a color that is just right for your space.
Paint Color Trends for Kitchen Cabinets
Experimenting with different colors and taking into account your existing decor are both necessary steps in determining the best color for your kitchen cabinets.
Green kitchen cabinets have been trending for several years, but the trend remains strong for 2024 and beyond. Many people attribute the popularity of this trend to the connection between green colors and the natural world. Green produces an organic and calming vibe in the kitchen while also looking modern and vibrant. Green is available in a wide range of hues, including light and dark, moody and bright. Shades of green also look brilliant with hardware. Both dark or light green hues make an excellent contrast with brass or silver hardware.
Consider some of the current favorite green cabinet colors, including Benjamin Moore’s October Mist for a light silvery sage or their Forest Floor, which is slightly darker and has an olive shading. One of their most popular cabinet colors is Oil Cloth, which, though it is sage, has a slight yellow leaning.
Other well-loved shades of green include Sherwin Williams’ Cascades, a rich deep green with an undertone of blue, and Portsmouth, a gorgeous green-blue with a generous portion of gray to calm the color saturation. Farrow & Ball produces a wide variety of greens that work well for cabinets, including Mizzle, a soft gray green, and Green Smoke, a calm but deep green blue.
Warm and earthy tones such as sand or taupe may appear to be returning to the ubiquitous shades of 1990s beige, but the updated earth tones have richer and more complex undertones. These new, earth-toned shades appear sophisticated yet approachable in today’s kitchens. Sand and taupe are also versatile in terms of complementary tones and hardware, allowing you to tailor these shades to your specific kitchen design preferences.
Some of the best loved earth tones for kitchen cabinets include shades of taupe like Farrow & Ball’s Jitney, Benjamin Moore Pashmina, and Sherwin Williams’ Fawn Brindle. Deeper shades, like chocolate brown, are also becoming trendy for kitchen cabinets. Some of the best deep brown color options are Urbane Bronze from Sherwin Williams, which has a significant presence of gray, and London Clay from Farrow & Ball, which has significant warmth.
If you want a warmer earth tone, consider a shaded pink or an elegant terracotta like Smoked Trout, which is a warm mushroom shade from Farrow & Ball with a noticeable warmth, or their slightly more obvious pink shade, Dead Salmon, which can appear as either an aged pink or brown depending on your light.
Bright white kitchens will always have a place in kitchen design, but many designers are moving away from stark white and toward warmer light neutrals like ivory, cream, and ecru. These warm light neutrals reflect light in a similar way that brighter whites do, but they have a more approachable and welcoming appearance. These also pair well with the organic and earthy greens, blues, and browns that are trending in interior design today.
There is a rich array of warm, light neutrals that look stunning on kitchen cabinetry. Some tried and true options, according to designers, are warm whites like White Dove, a clean and balanced white from Benjamin Moore, and Shoji White, a complex, earthy white from Sherwin Williams.
Light neutrals for cabinets that aren’t white include options like beige and pale gray. Popular beige colors for kitchens include Accessible Beige, a warm beige with gray undertones from Sherwin Williams, and the fresh and sophisticated Manchester Tan from Benjamin Moore. Warm grays or greiges are also still well-loved colors for kitchen cabinets. Common options in these shades include the ubiquitous Revere Pewter, a soothing and elegant greige and Boothbay Gray, a light gray with a hint of blue, both from Benjamin Moore. For a Sherwin Williams equivalent, consider Mineral Deposit, a cool gray with green undertones to warm it.
Designers and homeowners are becoming more daring in their use of color throughout the home. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the growing trend of using yellow paint for kitchen cabinetry. Yellow comes in a variety of shades, from creamy yellow to rich gold and ochre. Even a small amount of yellow cabinetry can brighten up a kitchen.
Pale and buttery yellow paint colors for kitchen cabinets are available from Farrow & Ball. Some of these include Farrow’s Cream, which is a light cream with a touch of black to soften the brightness of the hue, and Hay, a dusty yellow that looks lighter in bright rooms and more yellow in darker spaces.
Dark yellows can also look stunning on kitchen cabinets. Popular yellow paint options for cabinets include Vintage Gold from Sherwin Williams and India Yellow, a rich ochre, from Farrow & Ball.
Blue kitchen cabinets remain a well-loved kitchen trend because shades of blue have a stylish but classic look that few other colors possess. Light blue cabinetry has long been prevalent, but homeowners are increasingly exploring richer and deeper shades of blue for their cabinets.
Some common light blue options that designers are always returning to are Parma Gray and Light Blue from Farrow & Ball. Parma Gray is a cool, mid tone blue, despite its name. Light Blue is lighter and more silvery, with a touch of green.
There is a wide range of gorgeous deep blue colors that you can choose from for kitchen cabinetry. Hale Navy from Benjamin Moore is deep and rich, as is Van Deusen Blue, which is a true blue that works well in historic and modern spaces. Gale Force is a lovable Sherwin Williams blue. This is a deep and moody blue with cool gray green undertones.
People who want to create a dramatic kitchen design with minimal color should consider dark neutrals such as charcoal or black. These dark, moody hues will continue to be popular in kitchen designs in 2024, but dark neutral cabinets will always look classic. These colors have a wide range of undertones that you need to consider when choosing your perfect cabinet color. As a general rule, colors that lean toward blue or purple have a cool undertone and work well as a complement for cooler shades. Dark neutrals that have green or brown undertones pair best with warm colors.
Dark gray tones are complex, and their undertones will be more or less apparent depending on the available light. Downpipe, a rich, deep gray with blue and green undertones, is a favorite color from Farrow & Ball. This color is cool, but it is balanced enough to work well with warm color accents as well as cool ones. Peppercorn, from Sherwin Williams, is commonly used on cabinets because it is well-balanced and also works with warm and cool accents. One of the best warm, dark grays on the market is Chelsea Gray from Benjamin Moore. The brown undertones of this color mean that it works well with rich, earthy colors.
Black remains a common choice for kitchen cabinets in 2024. Tricorn Black, from Sherwin Williams, is a true and balanced black, which makes it a stand-by for kitchen designers. Railings, a more nuanced black from Farrow & Ball, has a slight blue shading, which can appear more blue or black depending on the lighting.
Most House Republicans have cosponsored a bill declaring that life begins from the moment of conception, a position under increased scrutiny after the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that frozen embryos are “unborn children.”
This Congress, 125 House Republicans — including Speaker Mike Johnson — have cosponsored the “Life at Conception Act,” which states that the term “human being” includes “all stages of life, including the moment of fertilization, cloning, or other moment at which an individual member of the human species comes into being.”
The bill does not include any exception for in vitro fertilization (IVF), a reproductive treatment that allows mothers to fertilize several eggs outside the womb in order to increase the chances of a viable pregnancy.
Several healthcare providers in Alabama have already halted IVF programs in the wake of the ruling, given that IVF treatments may include the discarding of fertilized eggs, which may now violate the state’s Wrongful Death of a Minor Act.
The lack of an IVF exception is notable, given the carveout contained within a previous version of the Life at Conception Act introduced by Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky in 2017.
“Nothing in this Act shall be construed to require the prosecution of any woman for the death of her unborn child, a prohibition on in vitro fertilization, or a prohibition on use of birth control or another means of preventing fertilization,” reads the 2017 bill.
Republican Rep. Alexander Mooney, the main House sponsor of the bill, did not respond to Business Insider’s request for comment on why that exception was not included.
Neither did spokespeople for Speaker Johnson, who largely controls the House floor and whose evangelical Christian views have entailed staunch opposition to abortion in the past.
“When a woman is pregnant, science tells us the new life she carries is a completely separate and fully new human being from the moment of fertilization,” Johnson said during a 2021 hearing on Texas’s 6-week abortion ban.
In the wake of the Alabama ruling, some Republicans have scrambled to declare their support for IVF treatments, recognizing the unpopularity of any potential ban.
That includes GOP Senate candidates in competitive battleground states, who quickly moved to issue pro-IVF statements on Friday with the encouragement of Senate Republicans’ campaign arm.
Some House Republicans in swing seats who have previously cosponsored the Life at Conception Act have done the same, including current cosponsor Reps. Michelle Steel of California and past cosponsor David Schweikert of Arizona.
As someone who struggled to get pregnant, I believe all life is a gift. IVF allowed me, as it has so many others, to start my family. I believe there is nothing more pro-life than helping families have children, and I do not support federal restrictions on IVF.
My wife and I struggled for years to have children. Today, we are blessed to have two beautiful children. IVF is a valuable and important tool for many Arizona families. I will oppose any effort to restrict it.
But Democratic groups have quickly moved to point out their sponsorship of the bill, noting the lack of an IVF exception.
“House Republicans have made clear they will stop at nothing — including outlawing in vitro fertilization — to reach their ultimate goal: banning abortion and restricting reproductive rights nationwide,” said Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee spokesperson Courtney Rice. “Their anti-family agenda, which elevates these dangerously out-of-touch positions into the mainstream, will cost them their majority this fall.”
House Majority PAC, an outside group aligned with House Democrats, distributed a memo on Friday noting that several other vulnerable Republicans have supported the bill, either currently or in previous Congresses.
That includes Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina, who told Axios that her office is “drafting a resolution” to express support for IVF.
“The fact is that ANY vulnerable House Republican who cosponsored the Life at Conception Act supported putting IVF and fertility treatments at risk,” reads the memo from the Democratic group. “HMP can guarantee that their support will be used against them over paid media in competitive House districts across the country this fall.”
Dog fur comes in many shapes, lengths, and textures. Many canines have curly hair across their whole body, while others just have curly hair on their ears (at least when they are cut traditionally). It doesn’t take much for a curly-eared dog to steal your heart, especially when groomed properly.
Here are some of the cutest dogs with curly ears!
How Are Dogs with Curly Ears Defined?
Of course, dogs cannot really have curly ears. However, they can have curly hair on their ears, which is typically what we mean when we mention curly ears.
Dogs have all sorts of coat textures. Many dogs have very straight fur, while others have not-so-straight fur. However, outside of the straight category, there are tons of other categories. Some dogs only have wavy fur, while others have extremely small ringlets. We’d count only those on the curlier side as “curly,” though you may have a different opinion.
To make matters even more complicated, some dog breeds have a scale of different fur textures. Not all purebred dogs have the exact same texture, so some dogs in a breed may have curly ears while others may not.
Below, we’ve listed dog breeds that typically have curly ears.
The 13 Dogs with Curly Ears
1. Poodles
Origin:
Germany
Lifespan:
10 – 14 years
Height:
10 – 24 inches
Poodles are the quintessential curly-haired dog breed. Their whole body is covered in curly fur, including their ears. They come in three different sizes: standard, miniature, and toy. All of these sizes have the same curly hair and very similar temperaments. The only huge difference is their size, which differs widely.
Poodles also come in many different colors, like white, black, red, brown, and even apricot. While they may be known for their funky hairdos, many pet owners get them trimmed into a puppy cut, which is much easier to take care of than a show cut.
2. Portuguese Water Dogs
Origin:
Portugal
Lifespan:
12 – 15 years
Height:
15 – 22 inches
As Portuguese Water Dog’s name suggests, these dogs are from Portugal, where they were utilized by fishermen for all sorts of tasks. Like the Poodle, their curly coat was developed because it is surprisingly water-resistant, keeping the dog warm even after they got wet. Their whole coat is curly, including the fur on their ears. They often look a bit more ragged than your average Poodle, though.
These dogs are typically described as loyal and intelligent, making them easy to train. They can make great family dogs if you can keep up with their exercise needs.
3. Bichon Frise
Origin:
France
Lifespan:
12 – 15 years
Height:
9 – 11 inches
Bichon Frises may not be as obviously curly as other breeds on this list. Their fur looks much more “poofy” than anything. However, their name actually means “curly toy dog,” and their coat is made up of countless tiny ringlets. Their undercoat is very fluffy, but their top coat is about as curly as it gets.
Many people get these dogs trimmed relatively short, as their very curly coats are also prone to matting. However, you can keep their fur longer, making them very fluffy.
These dogs are companion dogs, through and through. They were bred solely to be companion animals, and they’re exceptionally good for families as a result. They’re incredibly happy, playful dogs that get along equally well with children and adults.
4. Bedlington Terrier
Origin:
England
Lifespan:
14 – 17 years
Height:
16 – 18 inches
The Bedlington Terrier is known for its very strange haircut. Often, the fur on the top of its head and snout is kept long, while most of its body is shaved very short. However, if you aren’t showing these dogs, you can get them cut however you’d like. Many pets aren’t given the traditional show cut, as it can be a lot to take care of.
When their ears aren’t cut very short, these dogs do have curls. However, they’re the very small, poofy curls that look a bit like a Bichon Frise’s fur. Therefore, they may not have the larger curls you’re expecting.
Their coat is pretty prone to matting due to its very curly texture. Therefore, getting them cut shorter is often recommended for most dog owners.
5. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Origin:
England
Lifespan:
12 – 14 years
Height:
12 – 13 inches
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dogs may be what you imagine when you think of a dog with curly ears. However, their fur can vary in texture a little bit. You may find one of these spaniels with fairly straight ear hair, while another may have exceptionally curly ear fur. It all depends on the dog’s genetics.
Either way, these dogs do need a bit of grooming, though they aren’t as prone to matting as some other breeds on this list. They come in many different colors, ranging from tricolor to black and tan. They were originally bred as hunting dogs. However, they’re mostly kept as companions today. They may be wonderful lap dogs and bond very closely with their owners.
6. Lagotto Romagnolo
Lagotto Romagnolo courtesy Shutterstock
Origin:
Italy
Lifespan:
14 – 16 years
Height:
14 – 17 inches
Compared to other dogs on this list, the Lagotto Romagnolo isn’t very popular. In fact, you’d be hard-pressed to find it outside of its home region of Italy. It was bred to be the Italian version of a water dog. Like many water dogs, they have a very curly, waterproof coat to keep dry while they swim. Its curls are very evident and cover its whole body, including the ears.
While these dogs technically come in many different colors, you typically only see them in white or apricot. Anything else is quite rare, especially given how rare this breed is in general.
This breed is known for their intelligence and ease of training. They’re a bit like a Poodle in this manner. They’re also very active, like a Poodle, so we only recommend them for active families.
7. Pumi
Origin:
Hungary
Lifespan:
12 – 15 years
Height:
14 – 17 inches
The Pumi is a Hungarian breed. Like many Hungarian breeds, it has exceptionally curly hair. In fact, many of these dogs are corded, which involves forming the fur into very thick cords as the dog ages. Developing these cords can take quite a bit of time as the dog matures. However, once the cords are formed, they’re much easier to take care of than the dog’s natural coat.
Because it is so curly, the dog’s fur is very prone to matting. Around the ears, it tends to be particularly tight, causing problems with mats.
Despite their unusual and somewhat pampered look, these dogs were bred to work. They’re exceptionally alert and energetic for this reason. This breed absolutely isn’t for the faint of heart.
8. Barbet
Origin:
France
Lifespan:
12 – 15 years
Height:
15 – 22 inches
France’s water dog has the same curly hair as most other water dogs in the world. The Barbet has a long, curly coat that is usually kept in one of two ways. Like a Poodle, their fur can be cut regularly to prevent mating and keep it at a manageable length. However, traditionally, this breed’s fur was usually worked into cords like a Puli. This makes their fur a bit easier to take care of.
That said, this coat isn’t seen in cords quite as often as a Puli’s is, so you still see many dogs with exceptionally curly haircuts. What haircut you choose largely depends on your preferences, skills, and grooming schedule.
9. Kerry Blue Terrier
Origin:
Ireland
Lifespan:
12 – 15 years
Height:
17 – 19 inches
Kerry Blue Terrier has a very soft, single coat. Unlike most breeds, their coat varies widely in texture. Most of the time, it is at least wavy. Other times, it can be very curly, though. Often, dogs with a curly coat are more prone to matting, though it does depend on the fur’s exact texture and the dog’s lifestyle. Either way, these dogs are often trimmed to have shorter fur than they would otherwise.
Their ear fur may be cut particularly short, or the dog may not grow it out as much as other breeds. While these dogs absolutely do have curly fur on their ears, it isn’t nearly as obvious as some of the other breeds on this list.
10. Komondor
Origin:
Hungary
Lifespan:
10 – 12 years
Height:
25 – 28 inches
The Komondor is another Hungarian breed. Like practically all breeds from Hungary, this canine has very curly hair that is often corded to resemble dreadlocks. They’re known for their particularly long cords, which are formed all over their body and often rub against the ground. It takes these dogs a little bit to develop their cords, and they often get longer as they age.
Therefore, the Komondors with the very long cords that you see are also likely pretty old themselves.
These dogs have a truly unique appearance. They’re also very active and can be a bit stubborn. Therefore, it’s important not to purchase one based on one’s unique appearance alone.
11. American Water Spaniel
Origin:
United States
Lifespan:
10 – 14 years
Height:
15 – 18 inches
Like practically all water spaniels out there, the American Water Spaniel also has a dense, curly coat that keeps the breed warm in cold water. The dense curls make their coat pretty waterproof, helping them stay alive while swimming. Their ears are also covered in curly fur, of course, though many dog owners decide to get their fur cut shorter to make it more manageable.
Because these dogs were made to work, they are extremely energetic. They excel at just about any job, but they particularly like to swim. They’re also on the friendlier side, making them a great choice for active families.
Sadly, they are rarer than most breeds out there. You may have to wait a bit before a puppy becomes available.
12. Curly-Coated Retriever
Origin:
England
Lifespan:
10 – 12 years
Height:
24– 27 inches
As their name suggests, these Curly-Coated Retrievers have curly fur. They were bred to retrieve waterfowl out of lakes and ponds, similar to the Poodle. Their fur is a lot like a Poodle, and their ears are covered in very small curls.
Like many retrievers, they are exceptionally smart and loyal. They’re pretty easy to train, though they don’t necessarily rival the Poodle in intelligence.
Their fur requires consistent grooming, and they tend to be pretty active. Therefore, they aren’t the easiest breed to take care of, though their friendliness can make them wonderful family pets. They need quite a bit of time dedicated to them, so be sure you can take care of them properly before adopting one.
13. German Water Spaniel
Origin:
Germany
Lifespan:
12 – 14 years
Height:
18 – 21 inches
The German Water Spaniel has more wavy fur than extremely curly fur. However, their ear hair is still plenty curly for them to end up on this list! They were bred to be all-around hunting dogs, though they’re particularly known for their tracking skills. Today, they’re most commonly kept as companion animals, as they’re very friendly and tend to get along well with just about everyone.
Weekly brushing is required to prevent matting. Like many dogs with curly hair, they’re much more prone to matting than other breeds.
Final Thoughts
If you want a curly-haired dog, be prepared for the extra grooming that often comes with them. The vast majority of dogs with curly ears also require regular trimming, like the Poodle. Many also mat and tangle more easily, so you’ll need to brush them at least once a week, if not more.
Beyond that, curly-eared dogs come in all shapes, sizes, and temperaments. Just about everyone can find a dog for them on this list.

Harnessing soft whites and gently curving plaster forms, interior designer Johanna Amatoury has brought a holiday-house feel to this apartment in the peaceful Paris suburb of Neuilly-sur-Seine.
The duplex belongs to a couple who work in real estate and their three young children – a globetrotting family with a particular love for the Greek islands.
Interior designer Johanna Amatoury has renovated a Paris duplex
Amatoury designed their apartment as a homage to the region’s vernacular architecture.
“Because of their love for this part of the world, we arrived in this apartment and imagined a holiday house feeling, using warm and textural materials – very unlike typical Parisian apartments,” she told Dezeen.
“We worked with mineral materials, textures and raw colours in the apartment to provide depth and achieve the desired ambience.”
Curving plaster-covered surfaces feature heavily in the entryway
The design of the home was also shaped by its layout, arranged over the ground and first floors of a large 1980s building that opens onto a small garden.
This encouraged Amatoury to model the apartment on a single-family house.
The design draws on the vernacular architecture of the Greek islands
“We wanted to imagine it as a house, to create a more outside-in atmosphere, increasing all the size of the windows,” she said.
“The apartment is on the garden level, so my guideline was to open as much as possible to the outside and the planting there.”
Violetta marble tables anchor the living room
The apartment’s whole floorplan was reworked in order to create a living room, dining room and kitchen that all look onto the gardens outside.
The staircase was relocated to a more logical location close to the entrance, while upstairs the space was completely reconfigured to create four bedroom suites.
Artworks reflect the Grecian theme of the interior
As a homage to Greek island architecture, Amatoury used Roman plaster to soften the forms within the apartment, particularly in the entrance hall.
“We used warm, textural materials including lots of softly curving and tactile plaster finishes that give the space a sculptural look,” she said.
“Roman plaster is a very ancient technique that has a mineral appearance with a smooth, soft and slightly glossy finish, which catches the eye and dresses the wall through classic mineral colours while also embracing brighter nuances.”
In the kitchen, smoked walnut timber cabinetry is paired with splashbacks and worktops made of Navona travertine.
Set in an otherwise open-plan space, the area is enclosed in glazed panels.
“The family entertains a lot and cooks a lot, both the parents and the children,” Amatoury said. “As a result, it was necessary to be able to close off the kitchen while maintaining this visual openness.”
The kitchen is enclosed by glazed partitions
Much like a window, the glazed panels feature curved grilles and are set on an oak base that creates a visual link with the built-in oak banquette upholstered in white boucle wool.
“We create a lot of benches because they’re so practical, incorporating storage chests, but most importantly for their cosy appeal,” Amatoury said. “Benches introduce a mix of fabrics and through these fabrics, the space becomes more welcoming.”

For Amatoury, the furniture edit was a balancing act between creating a “harmonious yet eclectic atmosphere” that blends sophistication and comfort.
Taking a central role is the curving sofa in the living room, which is upholstered in off-white linen and paired with monolithic Violetta marble tables.
A staircase leads up to the second floor
“Its design not only provided a focal point but also added a touch of elegance and softness to the space,” she said.
“The curving shape offered a sense of flow and organic grace, enhancing the room’s visual appeal. The choice of off-white linen contributed to a serene ambience here, promoting a feeling of openness and lightness.”
The upper level houses four bedroom suites
Amatoury, who has worked on several residential and commercial interiors across Paris, says she was tasked with the project after the owners admired a home she had completed for friends of theirs.
“They liked our work and especially the warmth we bring to our projects, almost like a cocoon,” she said.
In 1987, astronomers recorded the only supernova visible to the naked eye in the last 400 years.
Astronomers have since wondered about what the massive explosion left behind in its wake.
Using JWST, astronomers finally have the answer to the question they’ve been chasing for decades.

In a nearby galaxy, 160,000 light years away, a massive star exploded in a brilliant supernova, spewing its guts across the universe. The explosion was so bright that humans could see it with the naked eye.
That was 37 years ago, and astronomers have been studying that same patch of sky ever since, chasing down the answer to a single question: What’s left?
There are two possible scenarios for what went down after the explosion. Now, armed with James Webb, the most powerful telescope ever built, scientists finally think they know what happened.

Research published today in the peer-reviewed journal Sciencehas settled the decades-long mystery. It offers the most compelling evidence, to date, that what lurks behind the clouds of residual gas and debris is one of the densest objects in the universe — a neutron star.
A neutron star is the collapsed core of a supergiant star that’s gone supernova. It’s essentially a city-sized sphere of densely-packed neutrons, co-author Patrick Kavanagh, an experimental physicist from Maynooth University, said in a press briefing.
“It’s more massive than the sun. A teaspoon of it weighs more than Mount Everest,” he said.

If the supernova of 1987, aka SN 1987A, hadn’t created a neutron star, the other possible scenario was that it produced a black hole. But Kavanagh seemed pleased with the outcome.
Identifying the neutron star left behind by SN 1987A, he said in the briefing, will now give astronomers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to study one in the early stages of its life.
“It feels absolutely amazing,” Kavanagh said.
The most studied supernova in history
Explosions like SN 1987A don’t happen often. The last time Earth witnessed such a brilliant cosmic event was about 400 years ago.
So, when SN1987A lit up the skies, astronomers studied it with as many instruments as they could including Hubble, Chandra, ALMA, and much more.
Eventually, SN 1987A became known as the most studied supernova in history.
“It’s the gift that keeps on giving,” Kavanagh said in the briefing.
Studying SN 1987A has deepened astronomers’ understanding of supernovae and the role they play in our ever-evolving universe.
The Hubble telescope captured this image of SN 1987A back in 2011, but astronomers needed a more powerful instrument to find what lies at its center.

For example, SN 1987A’s proximity to Earth allowed astronomers to track the remnant molecules and dust that are essential for the formation of life-sustaining planets like Earth, Kavanagh said.
But all those years of observation were limited by the technology of the time. Before JWST, astronomers lacked a telescope powerful enough to observe the compact object that SN 1987A left behind.
Hunting for a neutron star
To discover what lies at the center of SN 1987A, astronomers needed a telescope big enough and advanced enough to detect evidence of radiation from a hidden neutron star.
Enter the James Webb Space Telescope: the largest, most powerful telescope ever launched into space that is already revolutionizing our understanding of the universe within its first two years of operation.

With JWST, researchers led by astronomer Claes Fransson of Stockholm University were finally able to see past SN 1987A’s gas and debris at infrared wavelengths, using spectroscopy to examine the composition and movement of the gas cloud surrounding its center.
“During the initial scan through the data, a bright feature right in the center of 1987A jumped off the screen,” Kavanagh said. It was radiation emission lines from argon gas.

The presence of these emission lines could only be explained by a neutron star, not a black hole, Kavanagh said.
“We interpreted this as being conclusive evidence that the emission lines we were seeing were the result of radiation from the neutron center,” Kavanagh said.
Supernovae happen about every 50-100 years, or so, in our galaxy. And they need to happen close enough to Earth for astronomers to be able to observe their remnants.
“Our great hope is that these observations and future observations will simulate more developed and detailed models for supernovae,” Kavanagh said.
Huskies have a lot of fur and shed twice a year, but don’t let it intimidate you: Grooming is easy if you know the secrets (hint: never shave your Husky’s coat!). Tim Vogel, CEO of dog grooming franchise Scenthound, combs through his top three Husky grooming tips.
How to Groom a Husky
Tip 1: Never shave a Husky’s coat
Huskies are double-coated, meaning they have a top coat of longer, harsh hairs and a soft, down-like hair undercoat that provides heating, cooling, and protection. Shaving a Husky can make him hotter and cause his skin to sunburn. Shaving also damages the top coat and disrupts the hair growth cycle, meaning it may take years to grow back correctly, Tim shares.
Because Huskies naturally shed, there’s no need for regular trips to the groomer. Focus on brushing and quickening the shedding process with the right tools (listed below) to keep your Husky’s hair and skin looking healthy.
To maintain healthy nails, read our guide on trimming your dog’s nails at home, or visit your professional groomer every 4 to 6 weeks.
Husky grooming should include monthly baths and weekly brushing, at the least. This keeps the undercoat from matting, Tim says. A tangled coat is more than just unsightly — it’s straight-up painful, says Tim.
Keeping track of your weekly grooming schedule in a journal helps establish and maintain good habits.
Tip 3: Groom more often during the shedding season
Lastly, Tim urges Husky parents to do extra grooming during shedding seasons, which typically occur twice a year in the Spring and Fall. During this time, Huskies shed their undercoats, also referred to as blowing their coats, which regulates their body temperatures during different seasons. Bathe them weekly and brush them daily. This removes the loosened coat and prevents matting, Tim says.
Shedding seasons also means hair everywhere! Here are our top picks for cleaning up dog hair.

But not all fragrance fans are breaking the bank to do so.
On TikTok, shoppers are praising Target and its line of perfumes called Fine’ry, which are said to smell exactly like famous scents from designer brands.
The brand is exclusive to Target — sold both online and in stores — and its products range in price between $13 and $30 each.
One of the line’s most popular scents, as pointed out by perfume TikToker @zachdeparfum, is called Not Another Cherry.
Fans of the perfume say it smells just like Tom Ford’s famous scent, Lost Cherry, which includes notes of black cherry, tonka bean, and almond.
Target’s version, which is vegan and made without parabens and phthalates, has similar notes: wild cherry, almond amaretto, and Turkish rose.
But whereas a 1.7-ounce bottle of the designer scent retails for $395 at Sephora, the 2.02-ounce Fine’ry perfume at Target costs $30.
Other Fine’ry scents are said to be dupes of beloved perfumes like Santal 33, YSL Black Opium, and Baccarat Rouge, the famously luxurious fragrance loved by celebrities and wealthy beauty fans.
Target shoppers also say that many of the Fine’ry versions smell better and last longer than the pricier options.
“I have Not Another Cherry and I swear I can smell it on my clothes for DAYS! Best money spent,” one TikToker commented on a video from @zachdeparfum.
“I have the real one and think they nailed this,” a Target reviewer wrote about Fine’ry’s The New Rouge scent, a supposed dupe of Baccarat Rouge.
So, the next time someone smells expensive, remember that it might not be luxury perfume on their skin. It might just be one from Target.
