The Power Of Yoga For Glowing Skin

    [ad_1]

Yoga is celebrated for its stress-busting and strength-building abilities. But did you know that it can also benefit your complexion? “Yoga glow” is a thing and, if you practice regularly, you’ve probably noticed the effects of exercise on your skin. Dr. Genieve Burley tells City Fit: “Moving your body is medicine. It allows for detoxification by flushing all of the organs, it increases respiration, it lubricates joints and strengthens muscles. Breathing and moving in yoga can help to balance hormones and move waste stagnating in the intestines.” All of this leads to healthier, happier skin.

Yoga and exercise pair beautifully with self care rituals that extend to skin care. Combining different self-care practices helps you boost your wellness by creating a holistic routine. A face mask or quick morning skin care routine encourages you to spend some quiet time focusing on yourself, much like yoga. Here is a closer look at the power of yoga for glowing skin, on and off the mat, as well as some complimentary skin care rituals you can include to feel renewed.

On The Mat: 5 Yoga Poses For Healthy Skin

Yoga benefits for the skin start on the mat. Dendy Engelman, MD tells SELF: “Yoga causes vasodilation (enlargement of the blood vessels), which leads to increased blood flow to the skin. This allows for more oxygen and nutrients to come to the skin’s surface, creating a cutaneous flushing or glow. Want that coveted yoga glow for yourself? Whether at home or in the studio, here are five yoga poses to inspire your practice and give you a glowing complexion.

    Tadasana (Mountain Pose)

    Yoga Tadasana Standing Pose

With its focus on deep, rhythmic breathing, this simple standing pose helps alleviate stress and improve oxygen flow. According to NDTV: “Getting in more oxygen through controlled breathing helps the body to release harmful toxins and keep the skin healthy and glowing.” By enhancing blood circulation, tadasana improves lymphatic drainage which brightens the complexion and reduces puffiness around the eye area.

    How To Do Mountain Pose:

    • Stand comfortably with your big toes touching and heels slightly apart
    • Press the soles of your feet into the floor and engage your thighs, drawing them inward and upward
    • Lengthen your tailbone toward the floor and draw in your belly
    • Keeping your chin parallel to the mat, draw your shoulders back and down
    • Soften your eyes and throat and let your arms hang beside your torso
    • Optional: Raise your hands into a prayer position in front of your chest
    • Close your eyes
    • Inhale and exhale deeply for 5 breaths

    Uttanasana (Standing Forward Fold)

    Uttanasana Forward Fold Yoga Pose

Inversions are one of the best exercises to bring blood flow to the face and increase oxygen supply to skin cells. If you don’t have an opportunity for an entire yoga practice, take at least five minutes and turn upside down — it’s anti-gravity and gives the skin a healthy-looking glow.

How To Do A Standing Forward Fold:

    • Stand in Mountain Pose with your hands resting on your hips
    • Slowly exhale and bend forward from your hips (not your waist)
    • Bend your knees as much as you need to relieve tension from your lower back
    • Allow your head to hang heavy
    • If possible, bring your palms to rest on the floor or against the back of your ankles; if not, cross your arms in front of you, holding your elbows
    • With each inhalation, slightly lift and lengthen your torso; be mindful to avoid rounding your back
    • Inhale and exhale deeply for 5 breaths

    Parivrtta Sukhasana (Simple Seated Twist)

    Seated Twist Yoga Pose

A healthy gut is essential for healthy skin. Dendy Engelman tells SELF: “Toxins not cleared from the body often get deposited in adipose fat tissue and in the skin, which can lead to acne, discoloration and accelerated aging.” Parivrtta sukhasana is a gentle, seated twist that assists in digestion and toxin removal by increasing circulation and energy to the stomach, small intestine, large intestine and liver.

How To Do A Simple Seated Twist:

    • Sit on the floor in a cross-legged position (if your hips are tight, you may need to sit on a block or pillow)
    • Align your head, neck and spine and lengthen your tailbone toward the floor
    • Place your right hand flat on the floor behind you
    • Place your left hand on the outside of your right knee
    • As you exhale, gently twist to the right and gaze over your right shoulder
    • On each inhale, lengthen your spine; on each exhale, twist more deeply
    • Practice this for 5 breaths, then switch sides

    Matsyasana (Fish Pose)

    Yoga Fish Pose

Another yoga pose for better skin is matsyasana, or fish pose. By gently stretching the throat muscles, fish pose helps flush your thyroid and parathyroid glands, thereby keeping hormones in check. Additionally, matsyasana has great anti-aging benefits. The Social says: “This pose gives a good stretch to the muscles of the face and throat which makes it one of the beneficial exercises to reduce the appearance of a double chin.”

    How to do Fish Pose:

    • Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor
    • Lift your hips and tuck your hands beneath your buttocks, palms down
    • Draw your forearms and elbows in tight towards your body
    • On your inhale, press your forearms and elbows into the floor and gently arch your back to lift your torso up and away from the floor
    • Elongate your spine by firming your shoulder blades and lifting your chest higher
    • Gently tilt your head backward, letting the crown of your head rest on the floor
    • Keep your legs engaged
    • Inhale and exhale for 5 breaths

    Bhujangasana (Cobra)
    Cobra Yoga Pose

Stress is one of the worst offenders for skin woes. Genieve tells us: “Emotional stress takes a huge toll on your hormones and your skin. When you live in harmony with work, friends and commitments, your stress is reduced and your skin can glow.” Cobra pose helps reduce tension, stress and fatigue by opening your lungs and energizing your body. This pose, and others in yoga, help your wellness by lowering cortisol (the “stress hormone”) and reducing oxidative stress. An added benefit?  This also minimizes and prevents the visible signs of skin aging brought on by dehydration and loss of elasticity.

    How to do Cobra Pose:

    • Lie on your belly
    • Stretch your legs out behind you with your knees touching and the tops of your feet resting on the floor
    • Spread your hands on the floor beneath your shoulders and hug your elbows into your sides
    • Press your feet and thighs firmly into the floor
    • On your inhale, gently straighten your arms to push your chest forward and up off the floor. Arms may still hold a bend if you have reduced flexibility.
    • Slowly roll your shoulders back and away from your ears to elongate your neck
    • Hold for 5 breaths

Exercise is crucial for a healthy body, healthy mind and glowing skin. There are a few more ways that you can reach these goals for optimal results.

Off The Mat: Healthy Body, Healthy Skin

The benefits of yoga for skin are just one aspect of overall wellness. Yoga Teacher Becky Stefani appreciates the value of yoga but also maintains a nourishing skin care routine as an essential part of her approach to health and wellbeing. You can watch her skin care routine below.

In addition to enjoying a yoga session, our Lead Skin Care Trainer, Natalie Pergar, believes a scalp massage or a holistic skin care routine also offers relaxation benefits. Watch this In The Mix video to learn about the benefits of different wellness activities.

    Tip 1: Embrace Yoga Principles

Yoga isn’t just about poses. It has principles that you can bring into your daily life for benefits for your skin and wellbeing. One of yoga’s core principles is the five niyamas (observances) which are tools for cultivating happiness, humility, self-discipline and inner strength. The niyamas are the second limb of the “Eight Limbs of Yoga.” You can find ways to practice them in everyday situations in life.

The first niyama, Shaucha, means “purification” or “cleanliness.” According to Yoga International, shaucha offers techniques for cleansing the body and mind, creates the foundation for bodily health and acts as the pathway to deeper states of meditation.

The second is Samtosha (contentment). This refers to looking to yourself for contentment and happiness rather than yearning for the things you don’t have and coveting the possessions of others. You can practice this through gratitude and by not blaming yourself for circumstances beyond your control.

Have you ever tried to break a bad habit? Or free yourself of particular thoughts? The third principle is Tapas (self-discipline), a yogic practice of intense self-discipline and will power. This principle involves disrupting habitual thought and behavioral patterns to better your life and breakthrough discomfort. For example, wanting to adopt dietary habits that support your skin and body’s health. Genieve says: “We have layers of the epidermis in the gut and in the skin, so what we put in the gut will reflect on your skin.” A diet rich in plant-based foods and antioxidants can help to minimize wear and tear on your skin caused by environmental stressors like the sun, seasonal changes and pollution.

The fourth principle is Svadhyaya, the study of the self, and the practice of self-reflection and self-study. Unlike the Western understanding of self-study, which carries the concept of psychoanalysis, yogis have a different interpretation in mind. As Yoga International states: “Like the waves of the sea, it is said that individual awareness is never separate from the infinite consciousness in which it has its being. Each mind is a wave in a vast expanse of consciousness. Individual minds have distinctive qualities, preferences and colorings, but they are not entirely autonomous. The aim of svadhyaya is to bring the experience of that immense Consciousness, the Self, to awareness.”

And lastly, Ishvara Pranidhana is the 5th principle, often translated as “surrendering to God.” Regardless of your beliefs, think of this as either devoting one’s work to a higher power or ridding oneself of ego-focused desires. The Niyamas give ethical guidelines that lead to inner peace, which reduces stress and affects the skin positively for a healthy, clear complexion.

Tip 2: Wind Down With A Skin Care Mask

Regular facial masking will keep your skin soft and supple. Plus, masks treat any type of skin issue you may have: aging skin, oily skin, dehydrated skin, problem skin, uneven skin — never fear, there’s a formula for it. With so many options out there, it might seem overwhelming to choose the right face mask. That’s why we’ve collated a face mask guide to narrow down the options for your specific complexion.

We suggest including a face mask in your self-care routine once or twice a week, perhaps while meditating or during a gentle yoga session. Masking should occur after cleansing and toning. These steps ensure you have clean skin before locking in the nutrients from a mask.

When masking, it’s also fun to play around with mixologies that layer and blend a variety of treatments. Our face mask guide provides recommendations on how to mix and match your masks depending on your concerns. So, unroll your mat, get into the lotus position and let your skin absorb the benefits of a mask.

    Tip 3: Adopt Meditation

Meditation is a part of yoga that teaches you mental relaxation and concentration. The goal is to break free from digressive thinking so that we are not held hostage to our emotions and merely react. Neuroscientist and Waking Up meditation founder Sam Harris breaks down the practice to these beginner meditation instructions:

    1. Sit comfortably, with your spine erect, either in a chair or cross-legged on a cushion.

    2. Close your eyes, take a few deep breaths and feel the points of contact between your body and the chair or floor. Notice the sensations associated with sitting — feelings of pressure, warmth, tingling, vibration, etc.

    3. Gradually become aware of the process of breathing. Pay attention to wherever you feel the breath most clearly — either at the nostrils, or in the rising and falling your abdomen.

    4. Allow your attention to rest in the mere sensation of breathing. (There is no need to control your breath. Just let it come and go naturally.)

    5. Every time your mind wanders in thought, gently return it to the sensation of breathing.

    6. As you focus on the breath, you will notice that other perceptions and sensations continue to appear: sounds, feelings in the body, emotions, etc. Simply notice these phenomena as they emerge in the field of awareness, and then return to the sensation of breathing.

    7. The moment you observe that you have been lost in thought, notice the present thought itself as an object of consciousness. Then return your attention to the breath — or to whatever sounds or sensations arise in the next moment.

    8. Continue in this way until you can merely witness all objects of consciousness such as sights, sounds, sensations, emotions and even thoughts themselves as they arise and pass away.

    9. Don’t fall.

Meditating for just a few minutes a day can relieve stress in our daily lives, which in turn can help our skin. If we look at severe skin issues and cases of psoriasis, one study tested the hypothesis that stress reduction methods based on mindfulness meditation can positively influence the rate at which psoriasis clears in patients. The results supported this hypothesis. Scholarly articles also state: “As part of the total care of the psoriasis patient, physicians are urged to augment traditional psoriasis treatment regimens with stress-reduction strategies, such as biofeedback, meditation and self help approaches.”

Tip 4: Skin Rejuvenating Product Ideas

Equally important to your health is treating your skin from the outside in. Genieve tells us: “We need products that are packed with nutrients and made with natural ingredients, like plants. Our skin recognizes elements from nature, not synthetics.” Natural and organic products filled with vitamins, minerals and antioxidant-rich ingredients are extremely beneficial for a healthy and youthful-looking complexion.

Yoga Journal’s beauty experts recommend our Firm Skin Acai Exfoliating PeelFacial Recovery Oil and Rosehip & Lemongrass Lip Balm to keep your skin looking healthy and youthful. Packed with antioxidants sourced from acai berry, grapefruit and goji, the Firm Skin Acai Exfoliating Peel leaves your skin looking tighter and firmer. To feel calmer and more balanced, follow up with the hydrating and revitalizing Facial Recovery Oil, formulated with clary sage oil and ylang ylang. Finally, complete your mini stress-relieving skin care routine with the Rosehip & Lemongrass Lip Balm, an all-natural SPF 15 formula that defends dry lips.

  • This Chart Shows Why No One Is Beating Netflix in the Streaming Wars

This Chart Shows Why No One Is Beating Netflix in the Streaming Wars

    [ad_1]

    • Netflix is crushing its competitors when it comes to “churn.”
    • That’s the ratio of people who cancel their subscriptions each month vs. those who stay.
    • Starz has the worst churn rate, according to Antenna data shared with BI; Netflix has the best.

Netflix competitors have spent billions of dollars chasing the company. They’re still nowhere near it.

On Tuesday we’ll see another reminder of the gap between Netflix and its peers when it releases earnings: The streamer is expected to say it has something like 250 million paid subscribers and made about a billion dollars in profit last quarter — numbers none of its competitors can come close to.

But you don’t need to focus on financials to see the gap between Netflix and its peers. Here’s one easy way to visualize it: Look at Netflix’s churn rate — the percentage of customers who quit each month — and compare it to the other streamers.

This data comes to us via Antenna, a company that tracks subscription services. And it shows that Netflix consistently has a churn rate of about 2%. That’s way, way below all of its competitors, who at the moment have a weighted average of 5.3%.

Churn, obviously, tells you how satisfied customers are with the product. And it’s particularly important for streamers since their customers have become increasingly likely to quit over the last year.

But even though Netflix has had blips, its churn rate has remained remarkably steady and well below anyone else. Meaning: No matter how often you hear people say they can’t find something to watch on Netflix, they must be finding something to watch.

And they must be liking it because they keep their subscriptions.

None of its peers can say the same.

  • Ideas of Order selects bright colours for New York apartment renovation

Ideas of Order selects bright colours for New York apartment renovation

    [ad_1]

Bright hues define the different interventions that New York architecture studio Ideas of Order has made in this apartment at the northern tip of Manhattan.

The 1,000-square-foot primary residence in Hudson Heights was partially renovated for a couple, who had been living in the space for several years before deciding to invest in making it better suited to their needs, rather than buying another apartment.

Apartment with green bedroom, blue kitchen and pink storage
One side of this Manhattan apartment was overhauled by Ideas of Order to make it function better for its owners

“Their sons had been sharing a room, but were beginning to need their own spaces,” Ideas of Order told Dezeen.

“They also wanted a space that could be designed for flexibility for when their children left for college.”

Bedroom with lime green built-ins housing a bed, a desk and storage
In the newly created bedroom, a lime green built-in houses a bed, a desk and storage

The kitchen also needed updating, to make it more suitable for entertaining, and more efficient storage space was required in the entryway.

So the architects reworked one side of the open living area, adding a bedroom on one side of the kitchen and refreshing the other areas.

Blue and purple kitchen cabinets behind a concrete counter
A new wall divides the bedroom from the kitchen

The husband is French, and the couple spent several years living together in France.

During this period, they both became enamoured by the midcentury architecture and design in the country and wanted to apply this style to their own home.

“Inspired by their stories and the history of how colour was used by French midcentury designers like Charlotte Perriand, we suggested a series of polychrome millwork pieces inspired by Perriand’s design language, but updated for a contemporary home,” said Ideas of Order.

The different areas of the home were therefore given their own identities by applying bright hues.

Kitchen with cabinets on two sides and a porthole in the end wall
A porthole looks through from the bedroom into the kitchen, which has rubber flooring

Lime green is used in the bedroom across a full wall of built-ins that incorporate a single bed, a workstation and plenty of storage.

Sliding doors with fritted glass panels pull across to enclose the slightly raised room, while a porthole window with double shutters looks through the new wall that separates the kitchen.

Pink and grey built-in storage in an entryway
Storage in the entryway was made more efficient by new pink and grey built-ins

This adjacent space is denoted by raspberry and periwinkle millwork, which surrounds a small preparation area with an aluminium backsplash and matching panels above.

The same metal also fronts the bar counter between an arched opening to the living area, which is topped with concrete.

Kitchen viewed through an arched opening
Archways between spaces throughout the apartment have curved corners

Rubber flooring in the kitchen offers a practical alternative to the wood used through the rest of the apartment.

Finally, in the entryway – which is again raised slightly higher than the living area – an L-shaped cabinet system was constructed in a corner beside the door.

Pale pink is applied to the frames, while the doors and drawer fronts are finished in light grey and walnut is used for the trim. Choosing the right hues was a challenge that took many iterations to find the right balance, according to the architects.

“It was important that each pair of colours in the millwork work together, but that the colours also harmonise when viewed as a whole,” they said. “We wanted the colours to be bright, but not overpowering. And we wanted the colour pairings to feel timeless and not too trendy.”

Lime green bedroom to the left and blue kitchen to the right
The architects went through many iterations to find the right balance of colours

Another challenge was the budget, which was modest by New York City standards and required some conscientious spending – particularly on small details that would make a big impact.

“We love the custom pulls for the millwork, the shutters for the circular window, and the rounded end to the partition between bedroom and kitchen, which reflects the rounded openings throughout the apartment,” the architects said.

The couple had been living in the space for several years before deciding to invest in making it better suited to their needs

Ideas of Order was founded by Jacob Esocoff and Henry Ng, who are both Fosters + Partners and WORKac alumni.

Their renovation is one of the most colourful interiors we’ve featured in New York City of late, compared to a neutral show apartment inside the One Wall Street skyscraper and a loft in Dumbo with a subdued palette.

  • Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis Is Ending His 2024 Presidential Campaign

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis Is Ending His 2024 Presidential Campaign

    [ad_1]

    • Ron DeSantis is ending his 2024 presidential campaign.
    • DeSantis entered the race with lofty expectations, with many conservatives seeing him as a next-generation GOP figure.
    • But Trump has had a disciplined campaign, and DeSantis lost key support in many early-voting states.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Sunday suspended his presidential campaign, a stunning fall for the conservative leader who had long been seen as the biggest threat to former President Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign.

“I can’t ask our supporters to volunteer their time and donate their resources if we don’t have a clear path to victory,” DeSantis said in a message to supporters. “It’s clear to me that a majority of Republican primary voters want to give Donald Trump another chance.”

“While this campaign has ended, the mission continues,” he continued. “Down here in Florida, we will continue to show the country how to lead.”

DeSantis, who entered the presidential race last May, sought to build on the national profile that he had built for himself as an immigration hard-liner and as a politician who had fought against COVID-19 mandates. After winning reelection in November 2022 in a 19-point landslide, DeSantis’ profile exploded, and he was immediately viewed by many Republicans as the conservative who could go toe-to-toe against Trump and capture the GOP nomination.

In several polls taken before DeSantis entered the race, the governor actually polled ahead of Trump, which at the time revealed the vulnerable state that the former president found himself in politically after Republicans faltered in the 2022 midterm elections.

After DeSantis entered the race, he was competitive in the early-voting states, but as the summer and fall went on, his numbers slipped precipitously across the country. He staked his campaign on winning the Iowa caucuses, but Trump’s standing in the state only strengthened by the end of last year.

Trump’s myriad legal issues seemingly had the effect of boosting his polling numbers with GOP primary voters, which in turn iced out DeSantis as the leading alternative to the former president.

Trump would go on to win the Iowa caucuses, taking 51% of the vote to DeSantis’ 21% share and former UN ambassador Nikki Haley’s 19%. Despite campaigning in all 99 of Iowa’s counties, DeSantis did not win a single county in the state.

DeSantis’ exit from the race also comes two days before the New Hampshire primary, a contest where he was struggling for relevancy, with most his polling numbers mired in the single digits.

The governor in recent days had sought to pivot to the South Carolina Republican primary on Feb. 24, but with Trump riding high there and Haley have a sizable level of support in her home state, his pathway to continuing in the race became incredibly murky.

  • What are Zellige Tiles?

    What are Zellige Tiles?

    [ad_1]

Zellige tiles, which originate from Morocco’s ancient mosaic tradition, are one of the most popular kitchen and bathroom tile trends today. Beyond their trendy appeal, zellige tiles have a distinct beauty and handcrafted appearance, making them a long-lasting home trend. These handmade tiles are renowned for their vibrant colors, geometric patterns, and meticulous craftsmanship. Aside from their beauty, zellige tiles have a long history and tradition that contribute to their unique appeal. This exploration will equip you with the knowledge you need to decide if you are ready to get in on this exclusive tile trend.

    Zellige Tiles

Zellige tiles are a traditional type of Moroccan tile. The term zellige is derived from an Arabic word meaning “little polished stone.” These tiles served as the foundation for the intricate mosaic patterns found in Moroccan architecture and design, both historic and modern.

Authentic zellige tiles are ceramic tiles made from a special clay. Each tile is made by hand using a unique cutting, shaping, and polishing technique. This handcrafted process results in slight imperfections in each tile, which contribute to their unique charm. Zellige tiles have a glazed surface, which produces luminous colors and adds depth and character.

    Zellige Tile Style Guide

Tile trends change over time, but the zellige tile trend appears to be particularly durable due to its elegant style, handmade aesthetic, and versatility. See how some homeowners and designers have embraced the trend.

Green Zellige Tile in a Neutral Kitchen

Colorful zellige tile provides a striking contrast in a neutral colored space, making the design more balanced, vibrant, and dynamic. This soft green zellige tile provides an instant focal point in this all white kitchen and is the ideal backdrop for the vent hood and bright brass wall sconces.

    Tone-on-Tone Home Bar

    Elle Du Monde

Because of their slightly variable color and luminosity, zellige tiles are excellent for creating a tone-on-tone look. Designer Elle du Monde used black zellige tile as a backsplash for this black cabinet home bar. The black tiles give the bar enough glowing depth to keep the design interesting and unexpected.

    Vertical Zellige Tiles

These blush pink zellige tiles elevate the style of this simple white kitchen. Laying them vertically gives the kitchen a more modern look, but it also visually expands the space.

    Ombre Bathroom Wall

Rather than try to work around the color differences in zellige tiles, this designer embraced the ombre look by using zellige tiles in three different color variations. This gives the bathroom a contemporary look but also pays homage to the mosaic history of zellige tile.

    A Luminescent Glow

Zellige tiles feature an iridescent quality that makes them appear to glow in soft light. This makes them especially effective, even in neutral colored spaces, at creating dynamism and interest.

    Scalloped Zellige Tiles

Zellige tiles are available in a variety of shapes. The most popular are square tiles, which come in a variety of sizes, but you can also find rectangle, fish scale, cross, star, hexagon, and trapezoid shapes.

    All-Encompassing Zellige Tile

    All-Encompassing Zellige Tile
    M. Elle Design

This designer used blue zellige tiles to cover the entire bathroom from floor to ceiling. This may result in monotony with some tile types, but the variability and imperfections of zellige tiles provide inherent interest.

    Considerations Before Using Zellige Tiles

We all agree that zellige tiles are striking, but due to their distinctive style and nature, they will not work in every application or space. Here are some ideas to consider before implementing them in your home.

    Zellige Tiles

    Inherent Imperfections

Authentic zellige tiles are still handmade in Morocco. This means that no two tiles are exactly alike in size, depth, or color. Therefore, if you want a tile wall with flawless uniformity, zellige tiles are not for you. Instead, zellige tiles produce a tile wall or floor where corners do not exactly meet and there are slight color changes across the tiles.

People who use zellige tile should embrace its imperfections. One important tip from tile manufacturers is to mix the tiles from all the boxes you get for your project. This will spread out the slight color and shape differences in the boxes.

    Maintenance

Glazed zellige tiles require just a regular cleaning with mild soap or stone cleaner and water in order to keep them looking beautiful for years. Wipe up all spills quickly, and keep the tile free from abrasives that might scratch or mar the surface of the tiles. Slight imperfections in the tiles cause certain corners to stick out, so be aware of this while you clean. Never use harsh chemicals or abrasives because these will damage the glaze. Glazed zellige tiles do not need to be resealed; however, unglazed zellige tiles require regular application of a sealer.

    Adhesive and Grout

Many designers and tile professionals recommend that zellige tiles be installed with no grout line visible. Zellige tiles are installed on a substrate covered in a thin-set adhesive. Because of their irregular shape, some contractors opt to use wedge-shaped spacers to get the tiles as evenly spaced as needed through the laying process. Allow the thin-set to cure and apply an unsanded grout with a tile float at a 45-degree angle. Allow to sit for 10-20 minutes, and then clean and wipe down according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Be sure to clean and buff the tiles completely to avoid grout haze on the tiles.

    Where to Use Them

Zellige tiles appear delicate, but they are surprisingly durable. They are heat and moisture resistant and can withstand wear and tear. Zellige tile manufacturers insist that these tiles can be used anywhere, including walls, floors, fireplaces, and outdoors. This is true with a few caveats. Although zellige tiles are durable, some have slightly raised edges that can cause problems on certain floors.

The raised edges of zellige tiles are prone to scratches and other damage, so they are best used in low-traffic areas. Some people also claim that the glazing on zellige tiles makes them slippery. Use small-scale zellige tiles on floors so that the grout lines can provide additional traction.

    Finding Zellige Tile

It is easy to find authentic zellige tiles, but it is vital that you know what you should look for. Choose a reputable supplier with a proven track record for distributing zellige tiles. Some popular distributors include Cle Tile, Riad Tile, Zia Tile, and Badia Design. Some suppliers may provide you with documentation or a certificate that verifies the traditional and handmade origin of their tiles. Look for the hallmarks of authenticity, including a handmade look, glossy and “cracked” surface glazing, a variation of colors, and being made using traditional methods in Morocco.

    Timeless or Trendy?

Zellige tiles are currently one of the most popular tile trends in kitchen and bath design. While trend directions are always difficult to predict, zellige tile has characteristics that argue for its timeless appeal. Zellige tiles have been around for hundreds, if not a thousand, years. The fact that we are still using them today is proof of their timelessness. These tiles are handcrafted from natural materials. Their authenticity distinguishes them as a classic and elegant choice. So, while we can not predict whether zellige tiles will be used in all of the latest kitchen and bathroom designs in ten years, we can say that they will always be beautiful and will not be disappearing from kitchens and bathrooms any time soon.

Wealth Inequality Is so Bad Poverty Will Take 230 Years to End: Oxfam

    [ad_1]

    • Oxfam International published its inequality report, finding it could take 230 years to end poverty.
    • Meanwhile, it will be just a few years before the world has its first trillionaire
    • The report called on nations to invest more in public services such as education and healthcare.

It will take multiple centuries to end poverty at the rate we’re going, according to a recently published report.

Oxfam International published its inequality report this month, detailing a slew of grim predictions about the ever-widening wealth gap.

“At current rates, it will take 230 years to end poverty, but we could have our first trillionaire in 10 years,” the Oxfam report said, laying the blame on billionaires and monopoly-like corporations that are “exacerbating inequality” across the global economy.

The Oxfam report detailed how some of the world’s top billionaires multiplied their wealth since 2020 becoming $3.3 trillion richer collectively as billions of other people just got poorer, suffering from skyrocketing inflation and stagnant wages. Some 60% of the global population has gotten poorer since 2020, the report added.

“To end extreme inequality, governments must radically redistribute the power of billionaires and corporations back to ordinary people,” the report’s authors concluded. (The five lead authors listed are Rebecca Riddell, Nabil Ahmed, Alex Maitland, Max Lawson, and Anjela Taneja.)

The report called on governments to step up to the plate and invest more in public services, such as education, housing, transportation, and healthcare, just to name a few.

The authors also called on governments to heighten their oversight of corporations, increase transparency, and “radically increase taxes on corporates and rich individuals.”

Other speakers on the topic, such as economist Oded Galor, have suggested reflection on the past is critical to changing the future, BI previously reported. Galor argued global inequality has surged in the last 200 years, and to combat it, key nations like the US need to ensure they have infrastructures that support diversity and don’t regress politically, which Galor argued damages global prosperity.

The participation of global governments in the initiative to decrease wealth inequality will determine whether the world lapses into a future of “billionaire supremacy” or public power, the Oxfam report concluded.

Sam Crawford Architects tops Sydney home renovation with “garden oasis”

A private roof terrace enclosed by greenery features in Hidden Garden House, a Sydney home reconfigured by Australian studio Sam Crawford Architects.

Situated within a conservation zone, the home has been updated by Sam Crawford Architects to brighten its dark interior and transform it into an urban “sanctuary”.

An open-tread staircase has been added to the hallway

Alterations to the 198-square-metre home’s interior are first seen in its entrance, where a stair with open treads and a white-steel balustrade replaces a solid timber structure that previously restricted light from a skylight above.

Down from the entry hall is a spacious ground-floor kitchen and dining area, which is illuminated by 4.5-metre-high glass openings that lead out to a landscaped patio. The patio is paved with limestone tiles that extend out from the interior.

“By extending the ground floor finishes through the full-width doors into the rear yard, the garden and high-level green trellises at the rear of the site form the fourth wall to the rear wing,” studio director Sam Crawford told Dezeen.

“They create a sense of enclosure that draws the occupant’s eye up to the expanse of the sky rather than surrounding suburbia.”

Angled timber screens and greenery ensure privacy for the bathroom

A concrete ceiling in Hidden Garden House’s kitchen curves upwards to help draw in the winter sun and provide summer shading, while operable clerestory windows allow natural ventilation.

Above, this curved ceiling forms a sloped roof terrace filled with plants, which is situated off the main bedroom on the upper floor.

An ensuite bathroom, also lined with limestone floor tiles, has expansive openings offering a scenic yet private bathing experience enabled by angled timber screens and the terrace’s greenery.

“The rolling green roof serves as a visual barrier to the surrounding suburb, whilst allowing the occupants to occupy their private garden oasis,” added Crawford.

White walls and wooden furniture feature throughout the interior

Hidden Garden House’s consistent material palette of bright white walls and wooden furniture ties its living spaces together, while decorative square tiles line both the kitchen and bathrooms.

Curved details, such as the patio’s shape and the kitchen island and splashback, also feature throughout.

Other alterations that were made to improve Hidden Garden House’s layout include the relocation of entrances to the ground floor laundry room and bathroom.

Elsewhere, Sam Crawford Architects has also created a restaurant topped with an oversized steel roof and a bridge modelled on the curving shape of eels.

  • Stanley Cups Are Tearing Apart Gen Alpha

Stanley Cups Are Tearing Apart Gen Alpha

    [ad_1]

I’m not sure it’s hyperbole to say that Stanley cups — the colorful 40-ounce water vessels — are tearing apart the fabric of our society.

There were near-riots to get limited-edition colors of the Stanleys at Target, and people snapped up a Stanley-Starbucks collab cup and resold them at sky-high prices.

Now, Stanleys have come for our nation’s children.

The Cut reports that Stanleys have become the new status symbols for middle school girls. Julia Reinstein talked to teachers, parents, and kids who told about how Stanley mania is wreaking havoc on schools:

“Every day when I get into school at like 7:45 a.m., everybody comes over to me like, ‘Oh my God, I like your Stanley!’ or ‘It’s so cool, I want a Stanley just like yours!’” the 13-year-old, who is in eighth grade, said. “It makes me feel like I’m famous and being swarmed by paparazzi.”

The Stanley company has been making insulated cups for 100 years, but their 40-ounce straw Quencher cup blew up in the last few years thanks to a blog called The Buy Guide. The cup became a hallmark of the TikTok “clean girl” aesthetic.

Stanley cups for sale on a shelf

Stanley Quenchers are so popular that some stores limit the number sold. They’re now a big hit with Gen Alpha.

    Matt Fowler KC/Shutterstock

The Stanley may have reached its peak popularity this holiday season when it seemed to be the most common gift that Gen Z talked about wanting and receiving for Christmas.

But Casey Lewis, who reports on youth consumer trends, warned that the fact that younger Gen Zers were getting the cup might mean the Stanley trend has peaked.

Basically, once middle schoolers have it, the teens and college kids will move on to something new. (Probably the Owala Cup.)

Lewis’s prediction seems spot-on: The cup is now the hot item for middle school girls — a demographic not exactly known for kind behavior if you deviate from the norm.

God forbid you have a Stanley “dupe.”

    Reinstein reports:

Another woman, Jamie Sherman, said her 11-year-old niece was bullied by her classmates for bringing an off-brand version of the cup to her New Hampshire middle school — basically the exact same product, minus the Stanley logo.
“When girls pass her in the hallway, they laugh and point, and they say, ‘That’s not real,’” Sherman said. “Now, she doesn’t want to bring it to school and she doesn’t want to use it.”

Middle school is when kids can be ruthless about who has or doesn’t have some arbitrary status symbol, whether it’s Uggs or folding the waistband of your gym shorts the right way.

But the fact that a water bottle is such an object of obsession for Gen Alpha (kids currently 13 and under) might make some sense if you consider that these are the kids who grew up with their own water bottles with them at all times since they were toddlers. (Back in MY day, we — gasp — used the school water fountain).

And finally, one last quote that will leave you feeling icier than water in a Stanley cup left in a car that caught on fire:

Dahlia, in Dallas, loves her cup, but has mixed feelings about her newfound popularity. “I wouldn’t say any of them are actually my friends,” she said. “They only talk to me in the morning when I’m holding my Stanley.”

    Brrrrrrr….. 🥶🥶🥶🥶

  • What Is Desincrustation? Unclogging The Truth About Congested Pores

What Is Desincrustation? Unclogging The Truth About Congested Pores

    [ad_1]

Desincrustation, a term familiar to skin care experts but less known outside the spa world, is a process for deeply cleansing pores and preparing the skin for extractions. This technique involves applying a unique solution to help unclog oily or congested skin, which is particularly beneficial for acne-prone or oily skin types. By removing blockages that could lead to acne, desincrustation is essential for addressing problem skin. Read on and find out more about the specifics of desincrustation and how it benefits the skin.

    What Is Desincrustation?

Desincrustation is a deep cleansing treatment that’s effective in preparing oily or congested skin for extractions. It uses alkaline-based products to soften and break down sebum and keratin inside the skin’s follicles. Often accompanied by a gentle massage, the technique removes built-up sebum, debris and other impurities, keeping pores clear and reducing acne. This key treatment leaves the skin with improved skin texture and health, making it an ideal choice for oily or congested skin. Now, let’s explore the advantages desincrustation offers, which extend far beyond its immediate cleansing effects.

    The Benefits Of Desincrustation

Desincrustation offers numerous benefits for skin care, particularly for those with oily or congested skin types. In summary, this treatment:

    • Softens & Breaks Down Sebum: Desincrustation helps break down the sebum that accumulates in the pores and contributes to the formation of blackheads and whiteheads. It prepares the skin for extractions by dilating pores and softening sebum.
    • Enhances Skin Care Absorption: Desincrustation prepares the skin for subsequent treatments. By thoroughly cleansing and opening up the pores, the treatment ensures that skin care products penetrate deeper and work more effectively.
    • Improves Skin Texture & Appearance: Desincrustation is much more than a cleansing process; it plays a crucial role in enhancing the skin’s overall appearance. By effectively removing impurities and excess oil, this treatment can lead to smoother-looking skin. It directly addresses and reduces skin congestion, paving the way for a visibly clearer, more vibrant skin tone.

Desincrustation enhances skin texture and appearance, but it’s not for everyone. Let’s look at when this treatment should be avoided.

    woman looking at mirror

    When to Avoid Desincrustation

For spa professionals, it’s critical to conduct a detailed skin assessment before proceeding with desincrustation. This treatment is not recommended for certain skin conditions due to the risks of exacerbating skin issues. Key conditions include:

    • Cystic & Inflammatory Acne: The intense cleansing process can aggravate these conditions, leading to increased inflammation.
    • Rosacea: The treatment’s intensity might intensify the redness and sensitivity associated with rosacea.
    • Irritated Skin or Open Wounds: Desincrustation can cause further irritation or even infection in these cases.
    • Eczema & Psoriasis: The process might trigger flareups or worsen symptoms in these skin disorders.

Understanding these exceptions is essential for ensuring the safety and effectiveness of the treatment for each Client. Be sure to connect with an Eminence Organics Team-member for comprehensive training on using this professional product.

    Professional Tips for Effective Practice

Desincrustation is a key technique for spa professionals to master, offering a path to improved skin health and appearance for Clients. Understanding and applying this method effectively can make a significant difference in your Clients’ skin.

    • Start with a thorough cleansing to remove surface dirt and oil.
    • Choose a desincrustation solution. Apply 2 to 3 pumps directly to the area to be treated using a fan brush or fingertips and leave on for 3 minutes. Remove any excess gel with warm water. If your Spa does not perform extractions or if extractions are not appropriate for the Client, the Desincrustation Gel can still be used as a second cleanse on the main areas of congestion to help break down sebum that accumulates in pores.
    • Be cautious not to overdo the massage to prevent skin irritation.
    • Ensure complete removal of the solution and follow up with hydration.
    • Advise your Clients on post-treatment care, including avoiding harsh soaps and unnecessary face touching.

Why Pores Love Charcoal & Black Seed

As a spa professional, you may be wondering about the typical ingredients in desincrustation products. Charcoal has long been celebrated for its properties as a tried-and-true detox ingredient for the skin, useful for targeting congested pores. Its ability to absorb impurities and unclog pores makes it an essential ingredient in skin care, particularly for desincrustation treatments.

Another potent ingredient is black seed, or Nigella sativa, known for its antioxidant properties and omega fatty acids. In desincrustation treatments, black seed is valued for its ability to cleanse deeply, even out skin tone and reduce pore clogging, complementing the effects of charcoal.

When combined in desincrustation treatments, charcoal and black seed offer a powerful dual-action approach to skin care. Charcoal works to detox and clear the skin of impurities, while black seed targets the appearance of dark spots and pore congestion. This synergistic effect leads to a more comprehensive and effective treatment for achieving clear, balanced skin. Together, charcoal and black seed are a formidable pair in addressing skin congestion and impurities. These ingredients are not only beneficial in professional spa treatments but also in complementary at-home skin care products, allowing for consistent care in managing pore congestion and maintaining skin health.
