If you’re missing a condom and suspect your dog has eaten it, don’t panic. Dogs will eat all sorts of harmless and dangerous things; thankfully, most cases of condom ingestion don’t result in any issues.

Having said that, you might be left wondering a few things. Why do dogs eat condoms? And what are the signs that you should be watching for? Read on to find out!

    divider-dog

    Why Do Dogs Eat Condoms?

This is a good question. Ask most vets about the foreign materials they’ve recovered from dogs’ stomachs, and you’ll likely receive a long list of strange and wonderful things—underpants, tennis balls, batteries…you get the idea. This does beg the question—why do dogs eat these things? And why would a dog eat a condom?

We’ve listed some possible reasons below:

    • Nutritional deficiencies
    • Boredom (something to chew on)
    • Anxiety (a way to relieve stress)
    • Habit (never learned not to)
    • Curiosity (just being inquisitive)

Remember too, that some condoms are flavored or scented, and dogs have an incredible sense of smell. This might make condoms particularly appealing to dogs.

What Issues Can a Condom Cause?

While most condoms will pass through the digestive tract without causing major issues, small-breed dogs or dogs that have eaten multiple condoms may be more likely to develop problems. This is because they have smaller stomachs and bowels, putting them at greater risk of intestinal blockage or obstruction.

    Possible risks:

    • Irritation of the esophagus (particularly if swallowed in its packet)
    • Blockage of the stomach or intestines
    • Temporary vomiting and diarrhea (gut upset)
    • Straining to defecate
    • Lethargy
    • Loss of appetite

    When Should I Be Worried?

Generally speaking, you should only be worried if you have a small breed dog, or if your dog is showing signs of being unwell. If you have a small breed dog, the risk of the condom causing a blockage in the digestive tract is higher. A blockage of the digestive tract is an emergency that will require exploratory surgery to be removed. For these reasons, contacting a veterinarian is a safe bet.

Vets are able to give medications to induce vomiting, which will hopefully get rid of the condom before it can cause issues down the line. Similarly, if your dog is showing signs of being unwell, such as lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, or reduced appetite, you should seek veterinary attention.

My Dog Ate a Condom but Seems Fine – What Should I Do?

If your dog has eaten a condom but is not showing any signs of being unwell, it’s reasonable to wait and monitor closely. If this is the case, we have some homework for you. You’ll need to check each and every one of your dog’s stools to ensure the condom is passed. This may take up to 48 hours.

Additionally, you should be feeding your dog bland food, such as kibble or cooked chicken and rice, and watching for any signs of lethargy, vomiting, or diarrhea. We do not recommend making your dog vomit at home, as this is associated with significant risks unless it is an absolute last resort.

My Dog Ate a Condom and Seems Sick – What Should I Do?

If you think your dog has eaten a condom, or you saw it happen, and they are now showing signs of being unwell, don’t hesitate to contact your veterinarian. This could be a sign that the condom has caused a gut upset or a blockage, and your dog may need medical help. Within 4 hours of the condom ingestion, your vet may recommend inducing vomiting. If not, blood tests and X-rays may be useful screening tests to assess your dog’s health and check for evidence of an intestinal blockage.

    divider-paw

    Conclusion

Ingestion of a condom is usually more of a nuisance than anything else. Most of the time, the reason why your dog has done it will remain a mystery. If you want the condom out of the stomach to avoid possible issues, it’s best to arrange a consultation with a veterinarian. If you have a medium or large-breed dog, and he or she seems completely fine, it’s okay to wait and monitor closely.

If your dog is showing any signs of being unwell, particularly vomiting and/or diarrhea, we recommend contacting your vet. And, lastly, while it may seem embarrassing, always be honest with your vet about what happened, as this will give them the information they need to help your canine friend.

  • These 6 California Seats Poised to Determine US House Majority in 2024

These 6 California Seats Poised to Determine US House Majority in 2024

    [ad_1]

    • The road to the House majority will play out in a set of highly-competitive California contests.
    • The GOP has faltered in statewide races in California, but they found success with House races in 2020 and 2022.
    • Democrats are looking to flip several GOP-held seats that are much bluer at the presidential level.

California Republicans are often thought as of an endangered species.

But largely through the efforts of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy — a Bakersfield native who stepped down from the House last December — the GOP in recent years has been able to claw back some power in the Golden State by winning a set of highly-competitive swing districts in areas where the party still retains a sizable base of support.

And it is in these districts, from the Central Valley to the outskirts of Los Angeles and down to Orange County, where the House majority will likely be won or lost in 2024.

Republicans currently hold a slim 218-seat majority, a precarious position for the party as the 213-member House Democratic Caucus works to flip the chamber this year.

Here’s a look at the six California congressional districts held by Republicans — five of which were won by President Joe Biden in 2020 — which will have an outsized role in which party holds the speaker’s gavel in 2025:

    Young Kim

    Rep. Young Kim.

Bill Clark/CQ-Roll Call, Inc via Getty Images

    Young Kim, 40th District

First elected to the House: 2020

Kim, a former member of the California State Assembly and onetime aide to former congressman Ed Royce, first ran for Congress in 2018 in hopes of succeeding her longtime boss. But she lost to Gil Cisneros in what was a banner year for Democrats, especially in the suburbs.

With the strong backing of McCarthy and other GOP leaders, Kim ran again in 2020 and defeated Cisneros in a rematch, becoming one of the first Korean-American women to serve in the House. After the 2020 Census, her congressional district, which now includes parts of Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino counties, was reconfigured into one that would have narrowly backed Biden.

Kim won reelection by nearly 14 points in 2022, but Democrats see the contest as winnable. She’ll now take on retired Orange County fire captain Joe Kerr in November.

    Michelle Steel

    Rep. Michelle Steel.

Bill Clark/CQ-Roll Call, Inc via Getty Images

    Michelle Steel, 45th District

First elected to the House: 2020

In 2020, Steel, a former Orange County supervisor, narrowly defeated then-Democratic Rep. Harley Rouda in a district that had long favored Republicans. (Two years earlier, Rouda flipped the district by defeating then-Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, a conservative fixture in Congress.)

Steel has staked out socially-conservative positions on issues like abortion and same-sex marriage, and in 2022, she won reelection over Democratic nominee Jay Chen by nearly 5 points.

But Biden would have won the current configuration of Steel’s district, which includes parts of Orange and Los Angeles counties, by 6 points.

In the November election, Steel will face Democrat Derek Tran, a consumer rights attorney.

    Mike Garcia

    Rep. Mike Garcia.

Tom Williams/CQ-Roll Call, Inc via Getty Images

    Mike Garcia, 27th District

First elected to the House: 2020 special election

Garcia, a former Navy fighter pilot, has proven to be an adept candidate in his northern Los Angeles County-anchored district. In all three of Garcia’s races, including the May 2020 special election triggered by the resignation of Democrat Katie Hill, he defeated former Democratic state lawmaker Christy Smith.

In November 2020, Garcia narrowly defeated Smith by 333 votes out of nearly 340,000 ballots cast (a 0.1% edge), but in 2022 he won by a much more decisive 6 points.

So the district, which would have voted for Biden by 12 points under its new lines, remains a top priority for both parties headed into the 2024 elections. Republicans need to retain a foothold in suburban districts like the 27th to have any shot of retaining their majority, while Democrats see the district as a key pickup opportunity given its bluer lean at the presidential level.

Democrats — including early-endorser Smith — are lined up behind George Whitesides, a former NASA chief of staff and onetime Virgin Galactic chief executive.

    Ken Calvert

    Rep. Ken Calvert.

Tom Williams/CQ-Roll Call, Inc via Getty Images

    Ken Calvert, 41st District

First elected to the House: 1992

Calvert is the longest-serving California Republican in Congress. A former local GOP county party chair, he’s represented parts of Riverside County in Congress since 1993. His seat spans several Coachella Valley cities, along with parts of the Inland Empire, including Corona.

The 15-term incumbent has been a mostly reliable vote for GOP leadership. Calvert was among the 147 Republicans who voted to overturn at least one state’s election results after the 2020 presidential election.

Calvert won most of his races by large margins before redistricting, and he last faced a truly competitive reelection fight in 2008. But in 2022, Calvert defeated Democrat Will Rollins, a former federal prosecutor, by just under 5 points.

Calvert and Rollins will face off in a rematch this fall.

    John Duarte

    Rep. John Duarte.

Tom Williams/CQ-Roll Call, Inc via Getty Images

    John Duarte, 13th District

First elected to the House: 2022

Duarte isn’t just a Republican in what would have been a Biden-won district in 2020. The businessman and pistachio farmer holds a Central Valley seat in one of the most pro-Biden districts that is currently held by a Republican.

House Democrats have been eager to take shots at Duarte, including his decision to support House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan’s onetime bid for the speakership. Jordan failed to win the speakership, eventually paving the way for Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana.

In 2022, Duarte defeated Democrat Adam Gray, a former state assembly member, by just 564 votes, in what was one of the closest congressional races in the nation that year.

Duarte and Gray will face each other again in November.

    David Valadao

    Rep. David Valadao.

Bill Clark/CQ-Roll Call, Inc via Getty Images

    David Valadao, 22nd District

    House tenure: 2013-2019, 2021-present

Valadao was narrowly booted from Congress during the anti-Trump 2018 wave. Two years later, the wealthy dairy farmer defeated Democratic Rep. TJ Cox in a rematch.

Valadao’s return to Congress was overshadowed by his decision to become one of 10 House Republicans to vote to impeach President Donald Trump in the aftermath of the Capitol riot. Unlike his colleagues, Valadao grew largely silent after the vote. As a result, Trump didn’t train his ire on the Californian to the extent that he targeted the other nine GOP lawmakers.

In 2022, Valadao bested Democrat Rudy Salas, a former state assembly member, by 3 points.

The congressman will face Salas again in the general election.

Vaginitis is a condition that all female dogs can experience in their lifetime. The underlying causes of vaginitis can be difficult to diagnose, and it may be challenging to recognize clinical signs associated with this condition. Intact and altered female dogs are susceptible to the development of vaginitis. Continue reading to learn more about vaginitis in dogs.

    divider-dog

    What Is Vaginitis?

Vaginitis is the inflammation of the vagina and/or the vestibule, the lower portions of the reproductive tract. Vaginitis can occur in all female dogs regardless of age and reproductive status. Inflammation can occur in the vagina for a variety of reasons, from growths to urinary incontinence.

What Are the Signs of Vaginitis?

Dogs with vaginitis can experience several signs, including:

    • Discharge from the vulva
    • Excessive licking/grooming of the vulva
    • Frequent urination
    • Scooting
    • Straining to urinate
    • Inflammation of the skin surrounding the vulva
    • Attracting the attention of male dogs

What Are the Causes of Vaginitis?

As mentioned, there are a lot of different reasons vaginitis occurs. Very uncommonly, vaginitis is caused by a primary bacterial infection. Although primary bacterial infections are uncommon, the normal bacteria found in the vagina can ramp up if recent antibiotics have been administered, leading to a bacterial imbalance. Some cases of vaginitis are considered idiopathic, meaning there is not an identifiable underlying cause. Below are some possible causes of vaginitis development in dogs:

    Common causes include:

    • Trauma from recent mating, birth
    • Foreign body within the vagina
    • Physical abnormalities like double vagina, ectopic ureters, persistent hymen, etc
    • Urinary tract infections
    • Herpes infection
    • Decreased estrogen
    • Urine pooling

    How Is Vaginitis Diagnosed?

If you have suspicion that your dog may be experiencing problems due to observed clinical signs, you should schedule an appointment with your veterinarian. Your veterinarian will perform a physical examination on your dog and will discuss diagnostics.

    Physical Exam

Often, dogs with vaginitis will experience discharge from the vulva that is white or yellow in coloration. The vulva may also appear inflamed due to ongoing irritation from licking or scooting. Patients rarely show signs of systemic illness. Clinical signs and history are often supportive of vaginitis.

    Urinalysis

A urinalysis may also be used as a way of ruling in or out a urinary tract infection. It is helpful to obtain a urine sample by cystocentesis instead of a voided sample. A cystocentesis sample of urine is obtained directly from the bladder with a needle and syringe. If urine pulled from the bladder shows bacteria, it can be trusted, as there have not been opportunities for contamination. Bacterial contamination of urine can occur during the voiding process when urine meets normal bacteria living within the vagina.

    Cytology

A swab may be obtained from the vagina and the cells can be evaluated under the microscope. In vaginitis, there will be an increased amount of white blood cells present and often bacteria as well. Again, it is critical to note that bacteria presence in the vagina is normal, but increased numbers of bacteria may be suggestive of vaginitis.

It is important to know if the patient is intact and if the patient has recently gone through a heat cycle, as this can influence how the results are interpreted.

    Further Testing

Additional tests may be recommended to determine the underlying causes of vaginitis. For instance, scoping may be done to evaluate for the presence of a mass. An ultrasound might be helpful in showing an ectopic ureter.

    divider-paw

How Do I Care for a Dog With Vaginitis?

The first step in being able to care for a dog with vaginitis is going to be identifying the underlying cause. Once the underlying cause has been found, proper treatment options will be discussed. Examples of treatment options may be surgical correction of a physical abnormality or potentially estrogen supplementation if the problem is linked to low hormone levels.

Care should be taken to closely monitor your dog for signs of recurrence, which may include excessive licking, increased urgency to urinate, and discharge from the vulva, along with others. If these signs are noted, it is important to schedule an appointment with your veterinarian.

If your veterinarian feels that your dog is uncomfortable, anti-inflammatories and pain medications may be prescribed. There may also be a benefit to administering probiotics.

It is important that the vulva remains clean and free of debris. Ensuring that the vulva is clean can help prevent secondary bacterial infections.

    Puppy Vaginitis

Puppy vaginitis is a common occurrence in young female dogs. This is typically seen in dogs less than 1 year of age and can resolve on its own. Resolution typically occurs after the first heat cycle. Although vaginitis in young dogs is not uncommon, other diagnostics, like a urinalysis, will likely be done to ensure that your puppy isn’t battling something more serious.

    PK paw divider

    Frequently Asked Questions

Should all dogs experiencing vaginitis be placed on antibiotics?

No! Most dogs will not need antibiotics for treatment. Unnecessary use of antibiotics may lead to problems.

Will my dog have recurring episodes of vaginitis?

It really depends on the underlying cause of vaginitis. Dogs with a physical abnormality that has led to vaginitis will likely continue having reoccurrence until the problem is corrected. A dog with a foreign body that has it appropriately removed will likely not go on to have recurrence of vaginitis.

    divider-dog

    In Conclusion

Vaginitis occurs in intact and spayed female dogs. Although common, treatment for vaginitis can be complicated, as it is dependent on the underlying cause. Identifying the cause enables clinical improvement through correct treatment. Improper use of antibiotics can further worsen problems in dogs and should be avoided. A veterinarian can help guide pet owners through recommended diagnostics and supportive care.

Arches of light warmly illuminate this Korean fried chicken restaurant in New York‘s Flatiron district, designed by Rockwell Group.

Coqodaq is the brainchild of restauranteur Simon Kim’s Gracious Hospitality Management, the group behind the Michelin-starred and James Beard-nominated COTE Korean Steakhouse.

The new restaurant offers an elevated take on traditional Korean-style fried chicken, encouraging diners to indulge in nuggets topped with caviar and to pair its “bucket” dishes with champagne.

“Designed by Rockwell Group as ‘the cathedral of fried chicken’, the restaurant design delivers a daring, yet refined dining experience that skillfully integrates Korean and American influences, placing them at the forefront of this enticing culinary adventure,” said the restaurant team.

To create the right atmosphere for this experience, Rockwell Group opted for a dark and moody interior of rich materials and low, warm lighting.

“Our goal was to capture the essence of this unique concept and innovative approach to fried chicken and translate it into a memorable dining experience,” said founder David Rockwell.

At the end of this procession, a mirrored wall reflects glowing arches and creates the illusion of doubled space. Meanwhile, plaster wall panels feature a crackled effect, nodding to the crispy skin of the fried chicken.

“The material palette was driven by a desire to surround diners in an envelope of warmth, creating a joyful place to be at any time,” Rockwell said.

  • New Database Lets Law Clerks Rate How Judges Perform As Bosses

New Database Lets Law Clerks Rate How Judges Perform As Bosses

    [ad_1]

Imagine a workplace in a field with minimal regulation or oversight, with managers treated with reverence and respect by all manner of law enforcement. Managers whose job is to interpret the law and weigh in on matters of guilt or innocence.

Now imagine one of those managers harasses or belittles an employee — or worse — and with impunity, threatens their career if they complain.

Attorney Aliza Shatzman knows exactly how it feels, and she’s made it her mission to help prevent anyone else from having the same experience. That’s why, after sharing her story in congressional testimony to lobby for more protections for clerks and other judiciary employees, she started the Legal Accountability Project.

This month, LAP launched a new database for law clerks to leave reviews of their experiences working for their powerful bosses: state and federal judges.

    Judges gone wild

From local jurisdictions to the Supreme Court, judges nationwide conduct their business with little regulatory oversight. They are supervisors of both their courtrooms and the clerks they manage. Still, despite their tremendous authority and a long history of abuses of power in the judiciary, judges are all but immune from disciplinary action due to misconduct.

“I wanted to formalize some of the informal resources and networks out there that exist,” Shatzman told Business Insider, who said clerks — who are usually law students and recent graduates at the beginning of their careers — often rely on word-of-mouth referrals and warnings about their prospective bosses to decide where to work. “There’s a lot of fear surrounding the judiciary, there’s a real culture of silence, and so our resources and our work are aimed at combating that.”

The database collects both positive and negative evaluations from clerks, and it is protected from liability issues stemming from the reviews by a law known as Section 230, which prevents sites like Yelp and Glassdoor from being held liable for the user-generated content hosted on their platforms.

“There could be two sides to any of these stories,” Judge Douglas Nazarian, a state appellate judge in Maryland who sits on LAP’s board, told The Washington Post about the database. “The purpose is to democratize and improve the clerkship experience, not to find ways to get judges in trouble.”

    Accountability born from congressional testimony

Shatzman said LAP’s review database is the resource she wished existed when she was a student at Washington University in St. Louis School of Law applying for a clerkship and later, as a law clerk experiencing mistreatment and unsure where to turn for help.

In her 2022 congressional testimony about the need for statutory change to protect federal judiciary employees, Shatzman said the judge she clerked for from August 2019 until May 2020 would call her names, describing her as “aggressive,” “nasty,” and a “disappointment,” and berate her for what he described as her “personality issues” when no one was around. Shatzman said the judge gave her unfavorable work assignments, regularly made her stay late in the office after her colleagues had left to yell at her, and ultimately terminated her clerkship early, saying she “lacked respect” for him.

The judge Shatzman clerked for has not made any public statement regarding her clerkship or complaint or his subsequent retirement. Emails from Business Insider seeking comment sent to accounts associated with the judge bounced back, and phone calls went unreturned.

But it didn’t stop there. She testified to Congress that the judge she worked for later gave a prospective employer a negative reference despite assuring Shatzman he’d be neutral if contacted about her in the future.

    The job offer was revoked.

“I could not believe that one person could have such enormous power and influence over my career and reputation,” Shatzman testified, adding that the US Attorney’s Office, where she’d been hired, would not disclose what the judge had said about her, even after she told them that she had been the victim of gender discrimination and harassment. The office refused to reconsider its position, and, she said, “the damage had been done.”

Human resources for the courts told her nothing could be done because “HR doesn’t regulate judges,” Shatzman testified. The federal judiciary is exempt from protections offered by Title VII of the Civil Rights Act — which means employees like clerks can’t sue if they experience employment discrimination based on race or sex.

While Shatzman submitted a complaint with the District of Columbia Commission on Judicial Disabilities and Tenure about the judge’s conduct toward her, the complaint was ultimately dismissed. According to disciplinary records reviewed by BI, the judge was later removed from the bench for unrelated conduct violations and health reasons in an “uncontested order of involuntary retirement.”

    A whisper network legitimized

Since beginning to collect reviews in 2022, LAP has gathered over 800 surveys from former law clerks about their experiences working for state and federal judges nationwide.

Shatzman personally vets each review. While reviews can be published to the database anonymously, she confirms the identity of each reviewer via their verified law school email addresses and work history before adding the reviews to the index.

The database collects information about the overall clerkship experience, as well as how each judge performs as a manager, gathering information about their overall conduct as well as what Shatzman calls the “mundane stuff” like hours and assigned tasks, which helps potential clerks identify the right work environment for them.

“We’re getting the full range of clerkship experiences because there is a full range of clerkship experiences,” Shatzman told BI, adding that the database is not intended to be a list of judicial misconduct incidents but encourages positive reviews as well.

“Anybody who wants to say that clerkships are universally positive is untruthful or deluded at this point,” she continued, adding, “I think many clerkships are actually pretty neutral and nuanced. And that’s why our survey elucidates a lot of that great nuance.”

Current law school students and recent alumni can access the database for $20 — with no judges, circuit executives, or reporters allowed in. Shatzman plans to partner with law schools to bolster participation and said she has already seen a higher rate of involvement in the project than students can typically expect from their alumni networks.

“I hope that judges will take this to heart. I know I have spoken with judges who’ve heard about the project and gone back to their clerks and said, ‘So, how do you feel about the chamber’s culture? How am I as a manager? How can I do better?’” Shatzman said. “And that’s important because absolutely everybody can improve. And this is a really important relationship, so it’s important to get it right.”

Can Dogs Eat Salami? Vet-Reviewed Facts & FAQ – Dogster

When it comes to food, canines are not typically picky. They don’t even mind sorting through the garbage! So, it should be no surprise if your pup shows interest in eating any food that you prepare for yourself in the kitchen.

For instance, they might want to snag a slice of your salami. So, is it okay to feed salami to a dog? While eating a piece of salami shouldn’t be hazardous, there are good reasons to avoid giving this food to your dog and to opt for other snacks instead.

    divider-dog

Why Salami Isn’t Ideal for Dogs

Salami is a type of cured meat that contains a variety of seasonings, plenty of salt, and is typically high in fat. While it may provide some protein for your dog, that healthy benefit is far outweighed by the risks. High fat diets provide excess calories that can contribute to weight gain and obesity, which in turn may lead to diabetes and joint issues.

High amounts of salt can lead to dehydration and even salt toxicity in high enough levels. Salami may also contain seasonings and spices that are actually toxic to dogs. Onions and garlic, if consumed in high enough amounts, are toxic and lead to issues such as:

    • Diarrhea
    • Vomiting
    • Abdominal discomfort
    • Anemia
    Salami

What if Your Dog Eats Salami?

If your dog snags a small piece of salami, there is usually no need to panic. One slice occasionally is not likely to cause any serious issues. It’s when a dog eats salami slices regularly or devours a whole package at once that you might have reason for concern. Contact your veterinarian if your dog happens to eat more than a few slices of salami, especially if they are showing signs of vomiting, diarrhea, not eating, or stomach pain.

If you’ve already been giving your dog salami on a regular basis, consider other healthier snack options such as lean, cooked meats, commercial dog treats, or safe vegetables.

The Type of Salami Doesn’t Matter

Salami comes in various forms and types, but they all have about the same nutritional values. Some have less sodium and fat than others, depending on how they are made, but they all have more than enough of each to make this food less than ideal for dogs. Whether it’s a salami stick, turkey salami, cotto salami, dry salami, or hard salami, it should be treated the same way when it comes to feeding it to your dog.

    FAQ

Is Any Amount of Salami Okay for Dogs to Eat?

Most dogs will be fine if they happen to grab a small slice of salami. Others may experience mild digestive upset after eating it, and still others may develop serious issues if they happen to get too much. To be on the safe side, don’t give your dog salami as a treat. Choose a healthier option instead.

What If a Dog Eats a Whole Pack of Salami?

It is a good idea to contact your veterinarian and let them know about the situation. They may make recommendations to help ease signs like gastrointestinal distress. If health problems develop, a visit to the vet might be necessary.

    What Are Alternatives to Salami?

There are no perfect replacements for salami, as this food is rich, salty, and fatty, and dogs shouldn’t have foods that are high in salt and fat. The best thing to do is choose a healthier snack all together. Lean, cooked beef or chicken are decent snack options to consider instead.

    divider-dog

    A Quick Recap

Foods like salami can be very enticing for dogs, however, salami is not a good choice to feed them. If they happen to eat a slice here and there, they will likely be fine, just don’t make it part of their regular meal or treat selection.

  • Parents Are Returning Worn-Out Children’s Clothing to Target

Parents Are Returning Worn-Out Children’s Clothing to Target

    [ad_1]

    • Target offers one-year returns on own-brand items, including Cat & Jack children’s clothing.
    • Some parents use the policy to get cash back or new outfits when their kids outgrow their clothes.
    • While some retailers are introducing limits on returns, Target is trying to make the process easier.

Kids can grow fast, and the cost of keeping them well-dressed can add up quickly.

Some parents have taken advantage of Target’s apparent version of the infinite-money glitch to save money.

“Attention all moms,” Jazmine Valdivia, a Target shopper and TikTok user, said in a video posted on TikTok in 2022. “If you guys buy Cat & Jack for your kids, there is a one-year warranty that Cat & Jack offers if your kid outgrows the clothes, whether it’s stained, ripped, whatever it is, they’ll refund you.”

In the video — which has racked up 1.2 million views, almost 85,000 likes, and 26,000 shares — Valdivia shows receipts from returning a large bag of clothing used by her three children for a total of $537.80.

A screenshot of a TikTok video about Cat & Jack returns

    TikTok

“Didn’t spend a single dollar for back-to-school clothes,” she added in an overlay.

Valdivia declined a request for an interview.

Other TikTok users have uploaded similar — albeit smaller — refund journeys in which they test out the company’s policy for themselves.

“Reason number 16293836286 why we love Target!” the user JMS_Steph captioned on a video showing return receipts worth $164.21.

A screenshot of the Cat & Jack page on Target.com

    Target

While some videos and comments suggest the company is cracking down on the practice, Target’s return policy for Cat & Jack products remains the same as for its more than 45 private-label brands. Workers told Business Insider they continue to process returns on large batches of used children’s clothing.

The employees requested anonymity as they were not authorized to speak to the media.

A hugely popular brand with an unusually generous policy

Target says its Cat & Jack label is the biggest kids’ clothing brand in the US.

“We sell well over 300 million units of Cat & Jack a year, which comes out to about eight Cat & Jack items for every child in America under the age of 12,” said Jill Sando, Target’s head of apparel merchandising, during the company’s annual meeting in March.

Like all of Target’s private label offerings, the brand is backed by an unusually generous one-year return policy.

“If you’re not satisfied with any Target Owned Brand item, return it within one year with a receipt for an exchange or a refund,” the policy states.

A Target spokesperson said the return policy reflects the company’s confidence in the value of its private-label offerings.

Chief Growth Officer Christina Hennington highlighted the brand on an earnings call last year, emphasizing the policy of “one full year with free returns should anything not meet our guests’ expectations.”

Some returns are unwashed or in ‘terrible condition.’

A worker in Illinois said the largest receipt she processed was about $300. “Absolutely used and in terrible condition.”

A lot of the clothing is returned without being washed, she added, and those products get tossed straight into the trash.

A worker in California said she had seen the trend increasing this year as parents returned for another year, and their friends decided to try it for the first time.

The largest receipt she processed was about $417 — higher than normal because it included a lot of shoes. She said the thing that bothered her wasn’t the monetary value; it was the slow process of manually typing in item codes on the computer. Even working quickly, the return took nearly 20 minutes to complete.

Returns without proof of purchase are capped at $100 a year per customer, but items with a receipt or purchased with a Target Circle membership are basically unrestricted.

Some shoppers say on social media their locations have begun taking a somewhat stricter stance in response to the TikTok trend, including requiring more specific documentation of purchases. Others focus more on the “satisfaction” angle of the guarantee, with heavy use indicating that a customer was satisfied with the product.

Receipts showing the value of Cat & Jack returns at Target

    TikTok

Still, the California worker said many people were disappointed by the value of their returns, which tended to be smaller than they expected due to various discounts at the time of purchase.

Either way, the total value of Cat & Jack returns is almost certainly a small percentage of the total revenue generated by the brand, which now pulls in more than $3 billion a year for Target.

Besides, what do many shoppers do right after returning a batch of Cat & Jack? Buy more Cat & Jack.

If you are a Target worker who wants to share your perspective, please or call/text/Signal at 646.768.4750. Responses will be kept confidential, and Insider strongly recommends using a personal email and a non-work device when reaching out.

Puppies are great fun to bring home for the first time. They’re playful, loving, needy, and they happen to like sleeping. Sleep is a requirement for animals just as much as it is for humans.  But the big questions are: How much sleep does a puppy need and why do they sleep so much? Let’s answer these!

    divider-dog

How Much Sleep Should Puppies Get Each Day?

Believe it or not, the average healthy puppy will sleep between 18 and 20 hours a day! Considering how quickly they grow, it makes sense that so much is needed. That said, many factors play a role when it comes to exactly how much sleep a specific pup needs to encourage and maintain good health. Age, size and energy level will all play a role.

That said, if your puppy sleeps only 15 hours or more than 21, there is likely no reason for concern, provided they seem otherwise well. The 18- to 20-hour estimate is just that and not a rule set in stone.

As puppies grow, their sleeping needs will also change. Most adult dogs will average about 12 to 14 hours a day, while seniors tend to dip back toward the 18- to 20-hour range.

    divider-paw

The 5 Reasons That Your Puppy Is Sleeping So Much

    1. It’s for Growth and Development

cavalier dog sleeping on owners lap

Puppies spend day and night physically growing. All their bones, tendons, and soft tissues are constantly expanding and growing stronger. The central nervous system works hard to keep the entire body regulated and ensure good health. The blood cells, the brain, the skin, and even the toenails all require large amounts of energy to grow.

Sleep aids a puppy’s body in growth and development because it enables the system to shut down, repair and process. No energy is being expended for walking, eating, or even holding up their head. The more a puppy sleeps, the more energy their little body can spend on building up the bones, brain, and other aspects to ensure a strong and healthy life as an adult.

    2. It’s Tied to the Number of Meals

We’ve all had that after lunch slump when you feel more like sleeping than working. That’s because after eating the body releases certain chemicals, like hormones, that can make you sleepy. It’s sort of the body’s way of shunting energy to digestion rather than other activities.

Puppies have small tummies which require more frequent feedings than adult dogs.  This just means they have even more meals in which they feel tired after, potentially increasing the amount of sleep they get during the day.

    3. It’s Hot or Rainy Outside

    Happy Sleep puppy corgi dog

When it gets hot, a dog wants to lie down and rest, no matter their age. This helps them stay calm and cool. If a puppy is playing around in warm weather and suddenly decides to take a nap, they are likely resting as a way to relieve themselves from the heat.

When it’s rainy outside and everything seems dreary and quiet, a puppy is likely to comfort themselves by curling up for a long nap in a comfy bed or lap. This extra napping can make it seem as if they’re sleeping “too much.” However, this extra sleep isn’t likely anything more than just indulgent rest.

    4. It’s Been an Eventful Day

Being a puppy is hard work—everything is tough to do! It takes extra work to try to get on the couch, and it requires a great deal of strength to refrain from jumping all over the kids when they come home from school.

When a puppy spends even just an hour excited, vigorous, and playful, especially when it’s a more rambunctious experience than usual, chances are that the pup is going to spend plenty of hours sleeping all the joy and excitement off afterward. A busy and eventful morning, noon, or night is sure to result in a nice, long slumber later.

    5. Illness

The above list are all normal reasons that a puppy may sleep so much. Now, let’s take a look at a couple of reasons that will require some attention.

Along with their body, a puppy’s immune system is still developing. When you couple that with a puppy’s need to investigate every new dog and pile of dog poop, puppies have the potential to get sick-a lot. Whether it be a bacterial, viral or congenital illness, it may cause a puppy to sleep more. Sleeping helps the body focus on fighting the disease rather than barking at the mailperson.  Other signs of illness that you may see are vomiting, diarrhea, fever, not eating, and not growing. If you think your puppy is sick, be sure to contact your veterinarian. Also, keeping your puppy up to date on at least the core vaccines can help ward off illnesses that may make them more sleepy.

A little side note here for small breed dog parents: these little pups are especially susceptible to hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar. Stress or long periods of not eating can deplete their small stores of glucose, potentially leading to lethargy and sleeping a lot, weakness, twitching and convulsions. Hypoglycemia can quickly become serious, so be sure to contact your vet immediately if you notice your puppy showing any of these signs.

How to Make Sure Your Puppy Gets Enough Sleep

Puppies are curious, playful, and interactive, just like human babies and toddlers. They also happen to be known for fighting sleep like toddlers do. Although they should be sleeping for between 18 and 20 hours a day, they are likely to try to break the rules with a few minutes of extra playtime or interaction throughout the day.

If a great deal of activity is going on in their vicinity and it’s enticing to them, chances are that they will try to skip the nap that they would take and join in on the festivities instead. If a puppy doesn’t get enough sleep throughout the day and night, they are likely to develop signs like humans would when lacking sleep.

    These include:

    • Lethargy
    • Lack of focus
    • Irritability/grumpiness

Of course, puppies show these signs differently than humans would, aside from the lethargy. They might lack interest in a game or toy that they usually like, be careless where they relieve themselves, become impatient and/or aggressive with other pets in the household, or act “grumpy” toward their human companions.

Encourage your puppy to nap by setting up a comfy bed in a quiet place in your house. Try to keep it out of the main stream of activities so that your puppy won’t be enticed to play instead of sleep. Stick to a schedule of interaction and playtime mixed with some downtime so that they know a little sleep now means more play later and be less likely to fight their nap.

    Conclusion

Puppies require a large amount of sleep to keep up with their growth and developmental needs. They may also sleep a little more depending on the weather or if they are sick. If your puppy seems happy, spunky, and healthy when they are awake, chances are that they’re doing fine. However, if you have any concerns or questions at all, don’t hesitate to schedule a consultation appointment with your veterinarian.

Architecture studio Linehouse has wrapped a food market in a Shanghai laneway neighbourhood around a central atrium informed by Victorian greenhouses.

Named Foodie Social, the 2,000-square-metre food market is located within the Hong Shou Fang community – a residential area in Shanghai’s Putuo district known for its classic “longtang” laneway architecture.

The food market is in a two-storey grey brick building in Shanghai

The entrance to the two-storey market was framed by a double-height arrangement of stacked recycled red bricks, with a corten steel canopy added to provide shelter.

The same recycled red bricks sourced from demolished houses in China can also be found on the interior walls, stacked to create three dimensional patterns.

A large glass door can be pulled open on warm days, with patterned paving from the laneway outside extending to the interior of the market, fully connecting the interior and exterior.

The interior of the market was designed to resemble a greenhouse, with shops and cafe’s arrranged around a central, double-height atrium.

The glass pitched roof above the atrium was lined with gently curved metal truss, in reference to Victorian greenhouses, with three large fans hanging from the metal truss to improve the air circulation.

A cafe in the atrium, which contains an olive tree planted into the ground, integrates a metal staircase that leads to the upper floor.

A area describes as a “stage” is located by the staircase with a series of undulating balconies wrapped around the atrium on the upper floor.

Various typologies of food vendors are arranged in the open atrium on the ground floor, some of which are designed to be retractable, allowing flexibility for different types of vendors as well as a large open event space to be formed at the centre.

“This new typology brings together the local with more curated food offerings in a contemporary yet humble and sustainable way,” explained Linehouse‘s Shanghai team who are responsible for the design.

Smaller snack shops were positioned on the ground floor, while larger restaurants occupy the upper floor.

Each stall was assembled from a kit of parts, so that the vendors are able to create their own signage and layout, but maintain a consistent material and lighting palette.

Linehouse is a Hong Kong and Shanghai-based architecture and interior design studio established in 2013 by Alex Mok and Briar Hickling. The duo won the emerging interior designer of the year category at the 2019 Dezeen Awards.

The studio has also recently designed the facade of a shopping centre in Bangkok and the interiors for a Hong Kong residence that respond to coastal views.
