“Architectural photography is dominated by empty, glossy, new buildings”

    [ad_1]

Architectural photographer Jim Stephenson explains how The Architect Has Left The Building exhibition at RIBA aims to draw attention to how people use buildings, in this interview.

Despite taking place at the Architecture Gallery at the Royal Institute of British Architects’ central London HQ, Stephenson told Dezeen that the exhibition is not focused on buildings.

“The installation is about people watching,” he said. “Although it’s at the RIBA and in the architecture gallery, it’s not really about the buildings – they’re just the backdrop, they’re the stage set really.”

“We wanted to create a meditative, large scale film piece that was all about how people use (and misuse) space once the architect’s work is done,” he continued.

The Architect Has Left The Building is an exhibition at RIBA

As the exhibition’s title suggests, the exhibition focuses on how buildings are used after the architect’s work is finished.

It aims to show buildings in use, in contrast to the majority of architectural photography that often portrays buildings empty, at their point of completion.

“When I used to work in architecture practices, we used to design everything around people and context,” explained Stephenson. “It felt like everything was dictated by those two things and then when we would get projects photographed we’d ask the photographer to omit those two things.”

“The buildings were empty objects – sculptures,” he continued. “It always jarred with me, so in our work we focus on people using space as much as possible.”

    Jim Stephenson's RIBA exhibition
The exhibition features the work of Jim Stephenson.

The exhibition include numerous photos taken by Stephenson, along with an enclosed screening room, where a film created for the exhibition was played on a dual screen.

“This film is all about the small interactions that occur in and around buildings – between individuals, groups of people and even between people and the buildings,” said Stephenson. “It’s all about the people!”

The film, which was created with artist Sofia Smith and has a soundtrack created by Simon James, contains numerous contemporary buildings from the past 15 years.

Among the buildings featured are Tintagel Castle Bridge by William Matthews Architects, Tate St Ives extension by Jamie Fobert, Sands End Arts and Community Centre by Mae Architects and London Bridge Station by Grimshaw, which were all shortlisted for the Stirling Prize.

The exhibition features a film screened on a dual screen

The film makes aims to makes people think about the connections between buildings and how people are connected to them.

“Watching Sofia make visual links between buildings that I hadn’t previously considered to have much in common was fascinating,” explained Stephenson.

“There’s a point in the film where we transition from Sands End Community Centre to Tintagel footbridge and it’s seamless – from a community centre in West London to a bridge over the sea in Cornwall!”

“And at London Bridge train station, Simon recorded not just the ambient sound that everyone can hear, but he also recorded the inner guts of the building with contact mics, as well as the sound in the electromagnetic spectrum,” he continued. “All those sounds get layered up in the show and I can’t go through that station now without thinking about them.”

Photo exhibition of Jim Stephenson's work
It also features photos taken by Jim Stephenson

Stephenson hopes that the film will demonstrate how people improve architectural spaces and how they are recorded.

“The history of architectural photography is dominated by empty, glossy, new buildings, photographed before people have come in,” said Stephenson.

“I think there was a fear amongst architects that people ‘mess up their building’ and photographing them empty somehow showed the architecture in a more pure and distilled way,” he continued.

“I think that’s mad. If the people you designed the building for are ‘messing it up’ then maybe there’s something wrong with the building? I’m half joking, but I’ve never documented a space that wasn’t improved by people, or at the very least a sign of life.”

One of the UK’s best-known architectural photographers, Stephenson co-founded film production studio Stephenson& with Smith. Recent projects photographed by Stephenson include a wood-lined community space in east London, a rammed-earth yoga studio to the gardens of Somerset hotel and a rolling bridge in London.

Recent buildings captured on film by Stephenson& include a visitor centre at the UK’s largest sawmill and a school theatre by Jonathan Tuckey Design in London.

The photography is by Agnese Sanvito, unless stated. The film is by Jim Stephenson and Sofia Smith with soundtrack by Simon James.

The Architect Has Left The Building is at RIBA in London until 12 August 2023. See Dezeen Events Guide for an up-to-date list of architecture and design events taking place around the world.

Civil Rights Groups Warn Threads Could ‘Become As Toxic As Twitter’

    [ad_1]

    • Civil rights groups warn that Threads will “become as toxic as Twitter” without better moderation.
    • In a letter, the groups urged Mark Zuckerberg to implement more rigorous moderation standards.
    • They said hateful speech and disinformation has already been rising on the brand-new platform.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg needs to better moderate his new Threads platform, or it could “become as toxic as Twitter,” civil rights, digital justice, and pro-democracy groups warned in an open letter to Zuckerberg and the head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri.

The letter — led by Free Press, Accountable Tech, and Media Matters for America — says the groups have already seen indications that “new users have been testing the boundaries of the platform’s moderation and enforcement.”

The letter cites “neo-Nazi rhetoric,” “election lies,” “bigoted slurs,” “COVID-19 conspiracies,” and more as examples of hateful speech that they have seen rising on Threads, which launched last week

Meta’s press team did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.

“Meta must implement basic moderation safeguards on Threads now or the platform will become as toxic as Twitter,” Nora Benavidez, senior counsel at Free Press, said in a press release about the letter.

She added that it’s imperative for Meta to establish better content moderation in the lead-up to the 2024 election to prevent the spread of hateful speech and disinformation.

The civil rights groups also accused Meta of “purposefully not extending Instagram’s fact-checking program to the platform and capitulating to bad actors.”

  • How To Help Your Client With Home Care Products And Routines

How To Help Your Client With Home Care Products And Routines

    [ad_1]

Whether your Clients book treatments for self-care, skin issues, relaxation – or a combination of all three – they visit your spa knowing they will leave their appointment looking and feeling better. And while ideally they will see you in person as often as possible, the best way to keep them coming back is to send Clients home with recommendations for products that will help extend the benefits and results from their spa treatments. After all, long-term skin care results are not achieved in the treatment room alone.

There are a few simple steps that you can take to make sure you and your Clients get the most out of your time together — and that those benefits extend far beyond the spa. Read on for some simple and useful tips that will allow you to make your Clients happy while increasing your sales.

    Why Is Home Care Important?

While your Clients undoubtedly leave their treatments with a glow, we all know that long-term skin care goals require more than just regular spa visits. Building on post-spa results requires some home care, which is why equipping them with the tools to maintain their results between appointments is an important part of the process.

Did you know that 89% of retail customers welcome home care recommendations and that over 85% of spa Clients reported purchasing skin care products after being given recommendations by spa staff? In other words, Clients want to be educated about how to make their post-appointment results last and they’re happy to spend money to make that happen. By recommending retail products to Clients, you can help them attain their beauty goals while you achieve your sales goals. So how do you go about it? We’ve outlined some best practices that will make the process as smooth as your skin after a body wrap.

    Ask questions

Having your Client fill out a skin care consultation form is a great first step in getting to know their needs, concerns, preferences and habits. All of these details will help you zero in on the best spa treatment to meet those needs, as well as the products to recommend for home use. Eminence provides tools like the custom Eminence Skin Care Consultation and Home Care Routine forms which help spa professionals create at-home protocols that will address Clients’ skin concerns and goals.

    Explore Client Needs

Ask questions to get to the root of their problems or pain points. It can be helpful to get a feel for the types of products they have used in the past, including what they liked or disliked and why. If you have a list of questions prepared, this will help you fine-tune the home care protocol and suggest products that will help your Client achieve their skin and self-care goals.

    Step-By-Step

Some Clients love to hear all about their treatments in real time. They’re eager to learn which products you’re using and why, and to ask questions about their own specific skin. This kind of play-by-play also allows you to tweak the treatment based on things like scent and texture preferences, as well as optimal outcomes. The more they enjoy the treatment and hear about the benefits of the products you’re using, the more likely they are to make a purchase on their way out.

    Provide Product Experience

A great way to get a Client to fall in love with a product is to let them experience it. Things like scent, texture and ease of application can all be demonstrated either during a treatment or after. A swatch on the back of the hand can do wonders, as can sending a couple of samples home with them.

    Educate On Product

You are the expert and your Client is often very interested to learn more. Lean into the unique features of the products and highlight the results you’ve seen. Often this is their first interaction with a specific ingredient or treatment type, and your expertise and deep knowledge can help convert them into a retail customer.

    Encourage Use At Home

Asking your Clients about their at-home routines is a great way to help fill in the gaps and recommend products that they may be missing. Again, you’re the expert and Clients are looking to maintain the results achieved by their treatments after they’ve left the spa. Introduce them to a step or product that may not currently be part of their routine (like a toner, essence, eye cream or mask) and explain the benefits of adding it to their regimen.

    Samples

Include a sample or two that pairs well with any products they’re purchasing. Once they get a chance to try it at home, chances are higher that they’ll purchase it next time. And if you’ve recommended a few products but they decline to purchase on the spot, sending a few samples home with Clients gives them a chance to try the products in their own time and notice the results, which ultimately could lead them back to the spa to purchase in the future.

    Positive Retail Space

The look and feel of the space is such an important part of the experience. Strategically merchandising products with a clear, uncluttered display – and incorporating brand assets, stands, samples and Eminence materials – can go a long way towards getting Clients interested in making a purchase.

    Home Care Routine

Whether you have talked the Client through every step of the treatment or you’re going over the routine afterwards, providing a detailed list of the products used, along with a completed Home Care Routine handout, is perhaps the most important step in the process. Not only will it list every product you used and give them a guide for home care, it will also stay in their file or future reference. If they misplace the list or come back asking about a certain product or routine, you or your staff will be able to refer to it easily and help them reap the benefits again.

    After The Treatment

When the Client’s treatment is over, make sure the last interactions are pleasant, informative and positive, as they are the final impression they will be left with. Choose three products to showcase at the front desk and inform the front desk staff of the “why” behind those recommendations. When polled, over 80% of Spa Directors said that it is very important that their staff are effective at recommending home care.

The products should also be listed on the consultation form that you’ll send home with the Client. All of this attention will help the Client to feel cared for, have all questions answered and have a sense that the whole spa supports their wellness.

Jewelry to the Rescue – Dogster

What do jewelry sales and animal adoption have in common? For dog lovers, everything, says award winning TV personality Allyson Spellman.

Shop and adopt is the theme of Allyson’s new Jewelry Television (JTV) live stream series, Jewelry to the Rescue, which features adoptable, homeless animals at the Young- Williams Animal Center in Tennessee and an array of animal-themed jewelry.

“Jewelry is such a connector of dog lovers,” she says. “It automatically elicits conversation and emotion.”

Allyson, who tries to promote animal advocacy whenever she can, brainstormed the idea from feedback after selling animal-centric jewelry on the various JTV shows she’s hosted for five years.

This pawprint is Allyson’s favorite piece of animal-themed jewelry © Allyson Spellman

“Our viewers would connect with me and post pictures and share stories,” she says. “They’d say, ‘This (piece) reminds me of my rescue!’”

She grabbed the opportunity to combine both her passions.

Three to four adoptable animals are featured during the weekly live stream at the shelter, along with other perks, like waived rescue fees and jewelry giveaways. Viewers nationwide can submit real-time questions about the animals and share their rescue stories.

“It’s interactive,” says Allyson. “I get so inspired by our viewers.”

In the few months it’s aired, adoptions are up, including “the cutest tri-pod dog,” says Allyson. The show also recently won a Telly Award.

You really have to ask yourself, she says, “Who rescued who?”

  • You Can Already Buy Fake Threads Followers for Instagram Twitter Clone

You Can Already Buy Fake Threads Followers for Instagram Twitter Clone

    [ad_1]

    • You can already buy followers for Instagram’s Threads.
    • Insider viewed several websites offering to sell followers for Threads accounts.
    • Instagram has long battled troves of fake followers, purchases likes, and bots.

We are now a week into the existence of Threads and there’s already a robust menu of followers you can buy on the internet.

From an offer of $7.50 for 100 followers, to $1,900 for 50,000 followers on Instagram’s Threads app, paid engagement services and bot farms are pouncing on a new market, according to a review of a handful of sites by Insider.

Instagram has long battled bots and juiced engagement on the app. The platform has been deleting fake followers and likes for years, and Instagram even has a section about this behavior in its community guidelines.

“Help us stay spam-free by not artificially collecting likes, followers, or shares, posting repetitive comments or content, or repeatedly contacting people for commercial purposes without their consent,” Instagram’s community guidelines page reads.

Screengrab of different prices for fake followers on Threads

FameSavy is one of many services offering packages for followers on Threads.

    Screengrab/FameSavy

According to the influencer-marketing platform HypeAuditor, on average, about 13.8% of influencers’ Instagram followers are categorized as “suspicious” accounts. HypeAuditor defines suspicious accounts as any Instagram page that appear to be bots or “use specific services for likes, comments, and followers,” the company told Insider.

While the follower count metric still holds some weight, especially when it comes to securing and negotiating brand deals as an influencer, it isn’t so clear how important follower count will be for Threads.

To start, followers aren’t as prominently showcased on Threads as they are on Instagram (or Twitter, for that matter). The number itself is at the bottom of the bio and appears muted when stacked with other vibrant buttons and text. And when it comes to algorithms, ranking on Threads is more dependent on what content someone interacts with.

“We do rank posts lightly and show recommendations (posts from accounts you don’t follow) in feed, which is particularly important for a new app before people follow enough accounts,” head of Instagram Adam Mosseri wrote in a recent Thread reply.

Buying an influx of spam followers on Threads could very well do nothing to help an account grow or find success as a creator.

Meta did not respond to Insider’s request for comment.

  • Herding Dog Breeds – Dogster

    Herding Dog Breeds – Dogster

    [ad_1]

Herding dog breeds are wicked smart and originally bred to round up and protect livestock. These high energy breeds will keep you on your toes In addition to herding livestock these breeds were bred for intelligence and working closely with humans.

Some of the most popular pet herding breeds are:

The most popular smallest herding dog breeds are:

The American Kennel Club (AKC) currently recognizes 32 herding dog breeds in the Herding Group. The AKC organizes dogs into groups based on the jobs a particular breed was originally bred to perform. Initially part of the Working Dog group, a more specific grouping for herding breeds was created in 1983.

    Herding dog behavior

Instinctually, herding dogs are driven to control livestock by gathering and protecting them, so these dogs flourish working on farms. Some herding breeds, such as the Shepherds and Belgian Malinois, flourish at protection work, such as Schutzhund, and various police work roles like narcotics detection and cadaver searches.

Key traits of herding dog breeds:

    • high energy
    • highly intelligent
    • loyal
    • athletic
    • active
    • protective
    • fun to train
    • industrious
    • very responsive to their handlers

Training is a must for herding dogs, and they’ll need to go beyond basic obedience skills, especially since they tend to nip as part of their instinctual behaviors. You need to work to minimize this tendency from the outset. Bored herding dogs can often be a behavior challenge and may start to herd children or even adults without solid training and proper outlets for their instinctual drive. Also called stock dogs, they are sensitive to sound and especially movement, so they may chase wildlife and even cars; therefore, training and adequate and appropriate stimulation and engagement are key.

Since herding dogs’ needs are best met by giving them a job, they do best in an active family with time to devote to meeting their mental and physical needs. But even if your working dog doesn’t have a flock to tend to, he can still get his genius groove on with mental/physical activities you can try in your backyard or with a class/group.

The best activities for herding dog breeds:

The American public came to love smart and family-oriented herding dogs like Lassie, the Collie and Rin Tin, the German Shepherd Dog. More recently we fell in love with Chaser, behavior psychologist John W. Pilley’s Border Collie, who knew over 1000 words! Today these brainy and spirited dogs are part of many families.

Herding dog breeds make great companions, but they’re not couch potatoes, spa day divas or walk-around-the-block dogs: herding dogs require a lot of mental stimulation and physical activity to thrive emotionally, physically and behaviorally. Herding is in their DNA, so finding your stock dog a job will keep you both active and happy for the long haul.

How to Use the Top 4 Options

    [ad_1]

There are four standard butcher block sealer options: mineral oil, an oil and beeswax combo, Waterlox, and polyurethane. The product you choose will determine how often you need to seal your countertops, ranging from weekly to up to ten years.

    Why Seal Butcher Block Countertops

    Why Seal Butcher Block Countertops

Butcher block counters contain several strips of wood glued together. While these counters offer a natural texture to your kitchen, they are porous, requiring sealant on a regular basis. A sealer protects the counter from absorbing liquid, staining, and growing bacteria. Sealers also offer some protection against divots.

Choosing a food-safe sealer for your butcher block is essential, especially if you use your counter as a cutting board.

How to Use Each Type of Butcher Block Sealer

The butcher block sealer you choose will affect the appearance of your counter and how often you need to reseal it.

    • Mineral Oil – Leaves a matte finish, use once daily for the first week and then switch to every 1-4 weeks, depending on use.
    • Oil and Beeswax Combo – Leaves a soft shine. Apply every week for a month and then apply every 3-4 weeks afterward.
    • Waterlox – Available in gloss, semi-gloss, and satin sheens. It can offer protection for up to ten years.
    • Polyurethane – Comes in various finishes. It can last up to 1-2 years, depending on the frequency of use.

Food-safe mineral oil works by soaking into the butcher block and creating a barrier on the surface. It’s one of the easiest butcher block sealers to apply but requires frequent application.

For a brand-new butcher block, you’ll need to apply a coat of mineral oil every day for the first week, then every week for the following month. From there, apply a coat of mineral oil every week or two to prevent your wood counters from drying out or warping.

If your butcher block counters have a polyurethane or wax coating, you must sand it off before using mineral oil. The oil can’t penetrate through a wax, Waterlox, or polyurethane coating.

    1. Clean Your Counters

Scrape off any food residue, clean your counters, and allow them to dry. If there was a previous finish on the counters, sand it off and clean them again.

    1. Apply the Mineral Oil

Apply a liberal amount of oil to your countertops with a lint-free cloth, ensuring you coat the entire counter and edges. Allow the oil to set for fifteen minutes, then wipe off the excess with a fresh cloth.

How to Seal a Butcher Block Counter with an Oil and Beeswax Combo

A combination of mineral wax and beeswax (also known as butcher block conditioner) will fill in small divots in the wood and leave a waterproof coating on the countertop. Many homeowners prefer a butcher block conditioner over mineral oil for dark-colored wood.

If your counter has a stain, polyurethane, or film finish, you’ll need to sand it off before applying a butcher block conditioner.

Howard’s Butcher Block Conditioner is one of the most popular oil and beeswax sealers for butcher block. It contains food-grade mineral oil, beeswax, and carnauba wax. Here’s how to use it.

    1. Clean Your Butcher Block

Ensure your counters are free from all food debris, clean, and dry.

    1. Apply Butcher Block Conditioner and Allow to Sit Overnight

Use a soft, clean cloth to apply the product to the countertop and edges. Allow to sit overnight, and wipe away excess in the morning.

    1. Apply a Total of 3-4 Coats for Brand New Counters

If your counters are brand new, repeat the process, adding a total of 3-4 coats.

    1. Reapply as Needed

When the counters start to look or feel dry, reapply one coat of the product.

How to Seal Butcher Block with WaterLox

Waterlox is a resin-modified tung oil product. It will leave a protective film on your countertops that can last 7-10 years. It’s food safe when cured but contains VOCs, so be sure to work in a well-ventilated area and wear safety goggles and a mask.

For the first coats, you’ll use the WaterLox original formula, which has a medium sheen. If you want a different sheen, such as semi-gloss, satin, or gloss, you’ll use that as your last coat.

    1. Sand and Clean Your Butcher Block Counters

Sand your butcher block counters to remove the previous finish, then clean them with mineral spirits.

    1. Apply Your First Coat of WaterLox

Apply the first coat of WaterLox with a soft cloth or buffing pad. Wipe off excess and allow the first coat to dry overnight.

    1. Apply the Second Coat

Apply the second coat with a brush or pad and allow it to dry for 24 hours.

According to the WaterLox website, after 24 hours, you must dampen a microfiber pad with mineral spirits and gently wipe the counter to remove any sanding residue before moving to the next step. Allow the mineral spirits to evaporate (about 30 min) before applying the last coat.

    1. Apply the Third Coat

For your final coat, switch to your desired sheen if applicable. Apply with a brush or finishing pad and allow it to dry for 24 hours.

Don’t use your countertops for at least 24 hours after the last coat, and continue with light use for seven days.

How to Seal Butcher Block with Polyurethane

Polyurethane forms a protective waterproof coating, preventing your butcher block from absorbing water and staining. One of the benefits of polyurethane is that you can get multiple finishes, allowing you to customize the sheen of your countertops.

    1. Sand and Clean Your Counters

Sand your countertops to remove any previous finish. Then clean them with mineral spirits and allow them to dry.

    1. Apply the First Coat

Use a brush to apply the first coat of polyurethane, coating the top of the counter and edges. Work fast so you don’t leave brush marks on the counter. Be mindful of drips.

Wait at least six hours before applying the second coat.

    1. Apply the Second Coat

Apply a second coat of polyurethane with your brush. Again, don’t overwork the product or brush strokes will be visible.

Refer to the product’s package for full dry/cure time before using your countertops.

The Sallie Mae SmartyPig Account pays a high interest rate — just not quite as high as the Sallie Mae High-Yield Savings Account. Still, it’s a good choice if you want a savings account that helps you actively save. You can save for individual savings goals within the account, such as “Emergency Fund” or “Vacation,” and set a deadline for each.

Although Sallie Mae doesn’t have a checking account, you can set up automatic transfers from an external account to this one, so you’ll stay on top of your savings goals.

You’ll need at least $2,500 to open a CD with Sallie Mae. If you don’t have that much money, you can find a bank that requires less.

Sallie Mae’s CD rates are pretty competitive, but the best CD rates are still at other online banks.

Sallie Mae pays a competitive rate on its money market account, and unlike most banks, there is a $0 minimum deposit.

The main draw of a money market account over a savings account is that the former makes it easier to access your savings. Sallie Mae does this by sending you paper checks, but it doesn’t send you a debit or ATM card as some banks do.

    How Sallie Mae Bank works

Sallie Mae is an online bank that offers savings accounts, a money market account, and CDs. Sallie Mae doesn’t have a checking account, which can make it difficult to access your savings quickly.

The Sallie Mae mobile app has received 4.5 out of 5 stars in the Apple store and 3.8 out of 5 stars in the Google Play store.

You can speak with a live customer service representative Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET. Sallie Mae doesn’t offer customer support on weekends, and there’s no live online chat feature.

Your deposits are FDIC insured for up to $250,000, or $500,000 for a joint account.

    Is Sallie Mae trustworthy?

The Better Business Bureau gives Sallie Mae an A+ rating. A strong BBB score indicates a company responds effectively to customer complaints, is transparent about business practices, and is honest in advertising.

Sallie Mae doesn’t have any recent public scandals, so you may decide you’re comfortable keeping your money with this bank.

    Sallie Mae vs. Ally

If you’re planning on opening a checking account in addition to a saving account, Ally will be your strongest option. Ally is the only one out of the two that offers a checking account.

The Ally Savings Account also has the benefits of both the Sallie Mae High-Yield Savings and SmartyPig accounts. It pays a little more than SmartyPig, but it also lets you save for individual goals through Savings Buckets.

If you want to open a CD, the better choice may come down to which term length you open.

    Sallie Mae vs. Marcus

If you’d like to open a money market account, Sallie Mae will be your default choice because Marcus doesn’t have one.

Marcus has lower minimum deposits for CDs than Sallie Mae, as well as more CD variety — you can open a Marcus No-Penalty CD or a Marcus 20-month Rate Bump CD, which gives you the option to increase your rate once during your term.
