If you’ve ever walked barefoot on hot pavement or done a polar plunge, you know the feeling of having extreme temperatures against your skin. Now imagine walking barefoot on hot pavement, rough terrain, and snow all the time (ouch!). While your dog’s paws and nose are designed to endure the elements, there are times when hot is too hot, cold is too cold, and everyday use warrants some tender love and care.

That’s where Bailey’s CBD Paw and Nose Balm comes in, a moisturizing balm formulated to soothe dry noses and cracked paws. Made from natural ingredients and infused with CBD, Bailey’s Paw and Nose Balm has all the amazing benefits of a moisturizing cream with the added benefit of having natural healing properties. But don’t stop there. If you’re looking for other products or shopping for a different pet, Bailey’s has a variety of other CBD (and non-CBD) products to choose from, like oils, chews, and treats, and has specific lines for dogs, cats, and horses. They even have options for humans too!

Whether you’re looking to ease your pet’s anxiety or soothe their dry nose, you can count on Bailey’s to keep your pet healthy and happy. I tried out the Paw and Nose Balm for my Goldendoodle, Micah, and can say that my happy boy is even happier now that his paws and nose are smooth.

Who Makes the Paw and Nose Balm and Where is it Produced?

Bailey’s CBD is a family business that was founded in 2017 with the goal of improving the health of nine-year-old pug, Bailey. Having watched Bailey deal with several health conditions, Bailey’s family formulated high-quality CBD products to not only improve Bailey’s health but stay on top of his long-term wellness.

Today, Bailey’s CBD is dedicated to making high-quality CBD products for pets. Their products are proudly made in the USA and shipped from their headquarters in Costa Mesa, CA, and all of their ingredients are non-GMO, vegan, and free of additives and preservatives. Who is the Paw and Nose Balm Best Suited For?

Any dog can benefit from having protected paws and a moisturized nose, which makes the balm great for dogs of all ages and breeds. The balm is especially beneficial for pups that are prone to having sensitive skin, cracked paws, and a dry nose (like Bailey!) and dog owners looking to protect their dog’s paws and noses during harsh weather conditions and outdoor adventures.

Even if you’re not an outdoor enthusiast, the medicinal properties of ingredients like aloe and CBD make it a great product to have on hand for minor wounds and for everyday use. The pocket-sized packaging and easy application also make it the perfect product to grab when you’re on the go, hitting the trails, or on the road.

    Overview

Bailey’s CBD Paw and Nose Balm - product open

Caring for your dog’s paws and nose isn’t just an act of love, it’s also necessary for their overall well-being. The team at Bailey’s knows this and created the Paw and Nose Balm as an all-around solution for your pet’s skincare needs. Whether you use the product as a luxury balm for everyday use, a moisturizing cream for harsh weather conditions, or an antidote for minor skin ailments, your pup will be thanking you for giving them smooth, healthy skin.

    Benefits

One of the best things about Bailey’s Paw and Nose Balm is its versatility. In addition to providing comfort and relief to sensitive areas (like your furry friend’s paws and nose), it can also be used on just about any area of inflamed or irritated skin.

A few ways the Paw and Nose Balm helps your pet include:

    • Soothes noses that are dry and chapped
    • Protects paws from harsh surfaces
    • Reduces inflammation and skin irritation
    • Heals rashes and minor wounds naturally
    • Hydrates skin and prevents dryness
    • Treats warts and small lesions

    How it works

For optimal results, apply a small amount of the balm to cracked, dry, or irritated areas on your dog’s skin. Once applied, the balm works its magic by soothing, moisturizing, protecting, and healing the affected area.

No worries if your dog licks it off either. Since the CBD Balm is made with natural, pet-safe ingredients, it’s okay if your pup has a quick taste and sneaks a few licks. That said, it’s best to keep your dog distracted for a few minutes after applying the balm to let it absorb fully (a few treats or an engaging toy should do the trick).

To get the most out of the CBD Balm apply the cream to the following areas:

    • Paws
    • Nose
    • Ears (avoid applying to the inner ear canal)
    • Rashes, hot spots, and minor wounds
    • Inflamed and irritated skin

    Key Features

Bailey’s CBD Paw and Nose Balm - micah pawing product by the door

    Quality

An amazing thing about Bailey’s is their commitment to making high-quality products. Everything from their ingredients to their packaging is intentionally sourced and thoughtfully created with you and your pet in mind. There’s nothing artificial about the CBD Balm either. All of the ingredients are 100% natural and safe for pets of all ages. I could tell the Balm was high-quality based on the feel of the cream and the natural hemp smell.

    Natural Ingredients

If there’s one thing that stands out about the Paw and Nose Balm, it’s the clean ingredients. There are only five ingredients in the Balm (beeswax, sunflower seed oil, shea butter, aloe, and USDA organic hemp extract with naturally occurring CBD) and each one is naturally derived and ethically sourced. The hemp extract itself is sourced from a family-owned, organic hemp farm in Colorado and each product is formulated by Dr. Robert Silver, a respected veterinarian.

    Rescue Initiative

In addition to providing pet parents with high-quality products for their four-legged family members, Bailey’s is on a mission to help pets in need. In doing so, they’ve partnered with Spoof Dawg to the Rescue, a donation-based non-profit that provides pet supplies to pet rescues across the United States. This means that for every four items sold, Bailey’s donates one bottle of CBD oil to Spoof Dawg to help rescue pets needing a little extra love.

Is Bailey’s Paw and Nose Balm a Good Value?

The Paw and Nose Balm is a good value. In addition to being an effective moisturizer for your pup, the Balm also acts as a natural healer, so it’s like getting two products for the price of one. The effects are long-lasting too and a little bit goes a long way, which makes it a great value for the money. When looking at other pet CBD balms on the market, Bailey’s Paw and Nose Balm is competitively priced and stands out for its versatility and for having all-natural, non-GMO ingredients.

    FAQ

How often should I apply the Balm?

The CBD Balm can be applied multiple times a day or as needed. If you’re using the Balm as a preventative measure, you can apply it before and after taking your pup for a walk or before and after going outside during extreme weather conditions.

Is Bailey’s CBD safe for pets?

Yes! All of Bailey’s CBD products are non-toxic and safe for pets of all ages. The hemp extract is non-GMO and third-party lab-tested to ensure safety, purity, and potency, and all of Bailey’s CBD products are hemp-derived and contain less than 0.3% THC. While Bailey’s products are thoroughly vetted to ensure your pet’s safety, it’s always best to consult with a veterinarian before using CBD products.

Does the CBD Paw and Nose Balm come in multiple sizes?

Yes. The Paw and Nose Balm comes in two sizes, a 0.5oz tin (50mg CBD) and a 2oz tin (200mg CBD). You also have the option of buying the CBD Balm as a single product or in a bundle of three, six, or 12 tins. A discount is applied when you bundle your order of the CBD Balm.

Our Experience with Bailey’s CBD Paw and Nose Balm

I had a great experience trying out Bailey’s Paw and Nose Balm on Micah. We live in an area with hot summers and snowy winters, so protecting Micah’s paws and nose from harsh weather and extreme temperatures is important. We also live in a high-desert region where the air is extremely dry, so I’m always looking for ways to keep Micah’s skin hydrated and moisturized.

The balm arrived in a small tin that was easy to open and use. I found the compact size of the 2oz Tin (200mg CBD) to be perfect for everyday use and storing in a bag when I’m on the go. I love being able to slip the tin into my pocket whenever I take Micah out for walks and hikes, and after a day of playing and sniffing, his paws and nose can definitely use a little TLC.

When I first tried the balm, I was surprised by how fast it worked. The results were almost immediate and I could see and feel a difference in Micah’s paws and nose after just one use. Micah’s paws had the most noticeable change and went from dry and cracked to smooth and soft within seconds. I also loved that the balm absorbed quickly and didn’t stain the carpet or leave a greasy residue on the floor.

The CBD Balm is easy to apply and is like rubbing lotion into your skin. It does have a thicker consistency though, and took a minute to rub into Micah’s skin and fully absorb. Micah is also a bit of a drama king when it comes to having his paws and nose touched and started licking his paws the second I applied the Balm. While it’s perfectly safe for your dog to lick the Balm, the product works best when it’s able to absorb fully. So, if your dog is like Micah and decides to give it a taste test, it’s best to distract your pup for a couple of minutes to give the Balm a chance to soak in. Treats worked as a great distraction for us!

One of my favorite things about the Balm is the clean ingredients. There are a lot of pet care products that have artificial ingredients to make the product look or smell a certain way, but that’s not the case with Bailey’s. Bailey’s CBD Balm is made with 100% natural ingredients that are free of additives and preservatives. This gives me peace of mind since the Balm is something that goes directly on Micah’s skin. I’m also incredibly reassured to know that the product is non-toxic and safe for consumption, especially since Micah eagerly ingested some of the Balm while I was applying it.

I really can’t say enough great things about Bailey’s CBD Balm. From the packaging to the ingredients, it’s an all-around amazing product. I know Micah loves having soft paws and a smooth nose too!

    Conclusion

If you’re looking for a great product to help combat your pup’s dry and irritated skin, I would highly recommend Bailey’s CBD Paw and Nose Balm. Not only is it an amazing natural healing ointment but it’s highly effective at soothing cracked paws and dry noses. Micah’s paws and nose feel so much smoother and look so much healthier now that we’re using Bailey’s CBD Balm. Between Bailey’s high standards and their sustainably sourced ingredients, the Paw and Nose Balm is the perfect safe and natural remedy for keeping your pup happy and their skin healthy.

11 Best Enzyme Cleaners for Dog Urine in 2024

    [ad_1]

Imagine that you’re planning on having some close friends over for dinner tonight. Directly after work, you drive to the grocery store to get the ingredients to make a delicious meal. You open the door to your home, grocery bags in hand, greet your dog, and that is when the smell hits you—dog urine.

If this scenario sounds familiar, we feel your frustration! It is not easy to house-train a dog or puppy, especially when you need to leave the house for a few hours. You have done your best to walk them before you head out, or even have a litter pan or tray that smaller dogs can use when nature calls and they cannot get outside. Cleaning up dog urine is never fun, so we have compiled a list of the top 11 best enzyme cleaners for dog urine. Enzyme cleaners have bacteria that release enzymes that help break down molecules found in bio-waste, like urine, feces, or vomit. This article reviews the pros and cons of highly-rated enzyme cleaners that can help get the stink and stain out of your home!

    1. Hepper Advanced Bio-Enzyme Pet Stain & Odor Eliminator Spray – Best Overall

Bulldog on Carpet with Hepper spray

Ingredients: Contains Live and Beneficial Bio-Enzymes to Fight Odors and Stains
Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) Approved: Yes

Cleaning up dog urine stains with a product that truly eliminates odors can be a difficult balancing act, but our Hepper Advanced Bio-Enzyme Pet Stain & Odor Eliminator Spray makes cleaning up easy. This product binds, lifts, and completely removes both odors and stains. It can be used on just about any surface that needs urine odors or stains removed, including furniture, floors, and carpets. Make sure to spot test before use in a large area since there is the potential for discoloration, as with any product of this type.

This product can also be used for other stains and odors, like vomit and feces. It comes in a 32-ounce bottle, and since the product is highly effective, that bottle should last you a long time. It has a neutral scent, so the product itself won’t overwhelm your home with odors, and it won’t simply cover up unpleasant pet odors.

The best part about this product is that it comes with a 100% satisfaction guarantee and you will be provided a refund if you aren’t satisfied with the product. It’s also made in the USA with eco-kind components, which means that it’s made to minimize its environmental impact and be safer for your home.

At Pet Keen, we’ve admired Hepper for many years and decided to take a controlling ownership interest so that we could benefit from the outstanding designs of this cool pet company!

    2. Shout Pets Enzymatic Stain & Odor Remover – Budget Buy

Shout Pets Enzymatic Stain & Odor Remover

Ingredients: Water, C12-15, Pareth-9, sodium xylene sulfonate, fragrance
Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) Approved: No
    100% Satisfaction Guarantee: No

The Shout brand is well-known for its cleaning products, so if you do not want to spend too much on an enzymatic spray, our recommendation for a good value spray is Shout Pets Enzymatic Stain & Odor Remover. You can use this standard all-around pet mess cleaner on furniture, hard floors, and carpets. It also has a fragrance, but some people find it too strong. However, other people find the odor pleasant. While this spray says it is designed for carpeting and upholstery, it is advised to do a spot test before applying the formula to the area. This spray does not have a guarantee for carpet protection.

    Pros

    • Budget-friendly
    • Used on multiple surfaces
    • All-around pet mess cleaner

    Cons

    • Strong odor
    • Must test on carpet first

    3. Nature’s Miracle Advanced Stain & Odor Eliminator

Nature's Miracle Advanced Dog Enzymatic Severe Mess Stain & Odor Eliminator

Ingredients: Water, surfactants, isopropyl alcohol, enzymatic blend, fresh fragrance
Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) Approved: No
    100% Satisfaction Guarantee: Yes

Another great premium spray is the Nature’s Miracle Advanced Dog Enzymatic Severe Mess Stain & Odor Eliminator. This spray is multipurpose, so it can be used on various surfaces, even clothes. However, this product should not be on leather, silk, specialty wool, or suede. The blend of ingredients discourages your pet from soiling the area again. Nature’s Miracle products have a good reputation for having light and pleasant scents. However, some people with sensitive sinuses have stated that the smell was a bit too strong to be used in enclosed areas.

    Pros

    • Fast-drying formula
    • Can be used on clothes
    • Money-back guarantee

    Cons

    • Strong odor
    • Cannot be used on untreated hardwood

    4. Bubba’s Super Strength Pet Odor Eliminator Carpet Shampoo

BUBBAS Super Strength Commercial Enzyme Cleaner

Ingredients: Water, Advanced Biological Blend. Non-ionic Surfactant, Fragrance, Polystyrene
Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) Approved: Yes
    100% Satisfaction Guarantee: Yes

Bubba’s Super Strength Pet Odor Eliminator Carpet Shampoo is known for its industrial strength, and while you might not be cleaning up the bio-messes of a kennel of dogs, you might feel that way when cleaning up after your puppy. Since you will probably be cleaning up messes at least once a day (good thing your pup is adorable!), you want to make sure your surfaces will not get damaged. Bubba’s has a CRI approval and a money-back guarantee on this product. This product also has a longer shelf-life than most other cleaners on the market. While this formula says it deters pets from urinating or defecating in the same spot, some pet owners find that their pooch still returns to the same area.

    Pros

    • Long shelf life
    • CRI approved, money-back guarantee
    • Pleasant smell

    Cons

    • Does not always deter pets from areas

    5. Angry Orange Enzyme Cleaner & Pet Stain Remover Spray

ANGRY ORANGE Enzyme Cleaner & Pet Stain Remover Spray

Ingredients: Water, orange peel oil, concentrated all-natural enzymes
Carpet & Rug Institute (CRI) Approved: No
    100% Satisfaction Guarantee: Yes

Angry Orange Enzyme Cleaner & Pet Stain Remover Spray gets an honorable mention for recommended cleaners because of its signature orange smell. Citrus has always been regarded as an effective natural deterrent for house pets, hence how Angry Orange got its name. This product’s enzymatic formula omits bacteria for up to 80 hours, continually fighting smells and stains. One application can help start to break down the most unpleasant of messes. One con to this product is that there is no clear list of ingredients. Many people find this product very effective on odors and stains; however, people with allergies and other sensitivities are hesitant to use this product around the house. Avoid using it if you are not fond of citrus scents.

    Pros

    • Emits enzymatic bacteria for up to 80 hours.
    • Pleasant orange scent
    • Effective on odors

    Cons

    • The scent may be too strong for some people

    6. Rocco & Roxie Supply Co. Stain and Odor Eliminator

Rocco & Roxie Stain & Odor Eliminator

Ingredients: Water, advanced biological blend, non-ionic surfactant, fragrance
Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) Approved: Yes
    100% Satisfaction Guarantee: Yes

Rocco & Roxie Supply Co. Stain and Odor Eliminator is another great enzyme cleaner for dog urine for a few reasons. First, it comes with CRI’s approval that it is carpet safe; your carpet will not get ruined when using this cleaner. Since most dogs will do their business on the rug, people often use these urine cleaners on carpets. Second, the particular blend of ingredients helps deter your dog from returning to the same spot to urinate again. Third, you can spray this cleaner on other items in your home: furniture, tiles, or clothing. Plus, the scent of the spray has been described as pleasant and not overwhelming. The benefits of this spray do make it a bit more expensive than some other ones on the market. Some older stains might need several applications.

    Pros

    • CRI approved
    • Money-back guarantee
    • Pleasant scent
    • Can be used on multiple surfaces

    Cons

    • Higher in price
    • Old stains need a few cleanings

    7. Life Miracle Enzyme Cleaner & Pet Odor Eliminator Concentrate – Best Concentrate

Life Miracle Enzyme Cleaner & Pet Odor Eliminator Concentrate

    Ingredients: Concentrated all-natural enzymes, water
Carpet & Rug Institute (CRI) Approved: No
    100% Satisfaction Guarantee: Yes

People are becoming more aware of their waste from disposable bottles and containers from pet cleaning products. While some bottles are recyclable, people want to avoid buying too many plastic bottles altogether. Life Miracle Enzyme Cleaner & Pet Odor Eliminator Concentrate is a great way to reduce waste and get rid of stains and smells from your pet’s waste. When diluted with water, this 8-ounce bottle of concentrate can make about a gallon of cleaner. This saves plastic waste and money. The exact ingredients are not listed, which might concern some people who have allergies. However, the product states that they use all-natural enzymes and scents, so it should not cause too many sinus issues. In addition, there have been some mixed reviews on the overall effectiveness of the concentrate. People have added less water to the concentrate with better results.

    Pros

    • Saves waste
    • Made with all-natural enzymes
    • Gentle scent

    Cons

    • Questionable effectiveness

    8. Simple Solution Pet Stain & Odor Remover with Pro-Bacteria and Enzyme Formula

    Simple Solution Stain Remover

Ingredients: Water, natural non-pathogenic bacteria, denatured ethanol, natural enzymes, detergent, and fragrance.
Carpet & Rug Institute (CRI) Approved: Yes
    100% Satisfaction Guarantee: No

Simple Solution Pet Stain & Odor Remover with Pro-Bacteria and Enzyme Formula is a top choice for a multipurpose cleaner because, unfortunately, your dog or puppy can urinate just about anywhere in your home. You want to have a cleaner that can work on different surfaces. This formula is effective on carpets, bedding, fabric toys, and other water-safe objects and areas. With a CRI approval rating, you can feel confident using this almost anywhere in your home. Simple Solution is safe to use around your pets and children. Although this formula has a gentle floral scent, some purchasers of the product say the smell is a bit too strong. People with sinus sensitivities might not like using this product in rooms with little air circulation. Some enzymatic cleaners can be used on cat urine as well as dog urine, but this product is only effective with canine messes.

    Pros

    • Budget-friendly
    • Can be used on many surfaces

    9. Sunny and Honey Pet Stain & Odor Miracle

    Pet Stain & Odor Miracle

Ingredients: Water, enzymes, nonionic surfactant, fragrance, opacifier
Carpet & Rug Institute (CRI) Approved: No
    100% Satisfaction Guarantee: Yes

There has been an increase in all-natural cleaning products on the market for your home, including pet cleaning products. Some cleaning products that target large stains and strong odors often contain a blend of harsh chemicals, causing allergies or damaging fabrics. All-natural products can be a great alternative, and we recommend Sunny and Honey Pet Stain & Odor Miracle. This cleaner can be used on a variety of surfaces and is safe for pets, children, and people with allergies. Using all-natural products is also an eco-friendly choice. Buyers have a choice of three different scents: spring mint, autumn spice, or light lavender. One con to this product is that it is more expensive than standard cleaners. If you have many pets that have accidents in the house, you might end up buying a few bottles of this product.

    Pros

    • Certified cruelty-free
    • Can be used on many surfaces
    • Comes in three different scents

    10. Naturally It’s Clean Natural Floor Cleaner

Naturally It's Clean Floor Enzyme Floor Cleaner

Ingredients: Water, plant-based enzyme blend, plant-based surfactant, biodegradable anti-spotting agent, natural stabilizer, orange essential oil fragrance
Carpet & Rug Institute (CRI) Approved: No
    100% Satisfaction Guarantee: No

Many enzyme products for dogs focus on carpets as being the main target area. How about floors in general? If you have a dog that is not yet house-trained and a beautiful wood floor that you do not want to be ruined, our recommendation is Naturally It’s Clean Floor Enzyme Floor Cleaner. This plant-based, non-caustic cleaner is safe for pets, children, and different floor surfaces. It is safe and effective to use on hardwood floors as well as tile, bamboo, marble, stone, linoleum, and even cork surfaces. Spray some of the concentrate on the soiled area and then mop over it with the diluted formula. One 24-ounce bottle makes 24 gallons of diluted formula. However, an issue some people had with Naturally It’s Clean Floor Enzyme Floor Cleaner was that they had to add more of the concentrate to get rid of odors effectively.

    Pros

    • Plant-based
    • Can be safely used on various surfaces
    • Does not need to be washed off

    Cons

    • Needs more than recommended to clean effectively

    11. BioTurf BioS+ Artificial Turf Pet Odor Eliminator Concentrate – Best for Artificial Grass

BioTurf BioS+ Artificial Turf Pet Odor Eliminator

    Ingredients: Bio-enzymes
Carpet & Rug Institute (CRI) Approved: No
    100% Satisfaction Guarantee: Yes

There are only a handful of enzyme cleaners that are designed for artificial turf and other outdoor spaces, and we recommend BioTurf BioS+ Artificial Turf Pet Odor Eliminator Concentrate. If your dog urinates on artificial turf, it can be a nightmare to clean with just water. BioTurf is eco-friendly and made with natural enzymes that will not harm any surrounding plant life. This formula can also be used on stones, concrete, tiles, and walls. Some consumers have had success using it indoors as well. One complaint that people had with the product was the smell. BioTurf is scented, but people feel the scent is a bit chemical-y, even when used outdoors.

    Pros

    • Can be used indoors and outdoors
    • Does not damage real plants and trees

Buyer’s Guide: Finding the Best Enzyme Cleaners for Dog Urine

Now that you have looked over our review of recommended enzyme cleaners, there are a few other things to consider before deciding on the specific cleaner.

    • Scents and fragrances. The scent of the cleaner seems to be the biggest issue for consumers of these products. While the manufacturers aim to make the cleaner’s scent mild and pleasant, there are still going to be people who find the smell overpowering or for whom the product causes irritation. If you have sensitive sinuses, it is recommended to go to the pet store and smell the cleaner before purchasing it.
    • Age of stain or odor. As much as we wish these cleaners were a magical solution to weeks-old stains and odors, they are not. One application might not be enough for stains and smells from your dog’s mess that is old. These cleaners are the most effective when used as early as possible. If the stain and smell are several days old, expect to clean the area twice to get rid of it.
    • Location of scents and fragrances. Many enzyme cleaners for dog urine state that they are multiple-purpose. But it is often a better idea to have an enzyme cleaner that targets a specific type of material. For example, some of the enzyme cleaners have the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) seal of approval to be used on carpets. If you want something specific for your carpet, look for those labels.
    • Always spot test. Enzyme cleaners will have a list of places to use this product and places to avoid it. Even though it says it is fabric-safe, do a spot test just to verify. Better safe than sorry! Go for all-natural cleaners when you can, as those are not made with strong commercial chemicals.

    Final Thoughts

When you decide you want to adopt a dog or puppy, it’s a good idea to add an enzyme cleaner to the list of pet accessories for purchase. We think that the Hepper Advanced Bio-Enzyme Pet Stain & Odor Eliminator Spray is the best. This is because it has a neutral scent, requires no mixing, and works effectively on more than just dog urine stains and odors.

Second place goes to the Shout Pets Enzymatic Stain & Odor Remover. And the third place goes to Nature’s Miracle.

The best way to get rid of stains and smells is to apply the spray or cleaner as soon as you notice it. You don’t want to have to run out to the store and buy one when you notice an accident on the floor or in other places in your home. Do not let dog urine ruin your day or your dinner party!

Buyer’s Guide – How to Choose the Best Dog Urine Removers

Choosing the Right Urine Remover for Your Home

There are lots of similar and duplicating ingredients in urine remover products, so it will sometimes come down to your personal preferences for scents or consistency of the product itself. However, there are some notable differences between various products.

    Bleaching Agents vs Bio-Enzymes

If you are looking for something that will work well on stains but you don’t have many concerns about odors or you aren’t worried that your dog will re-soil the area, then something with hydrogen peroxide or another bleaching agent is a good option. These products will work on odors but are primarily formulated to treat stains.

However, if odors are a big concern, then enzymatic products and baking soda-based products are great options because the enzymes literally consume the chemicals causing the negative odor reaction, and baking soda is well known for its ability to absorb odors and neutralize acidic compounds.

    Buyers Guide

When investing your money into any product, you will want to make sure it is worth it for you. If there is something specific you want out of a conditioner, don’t compromise. There are plenty of products on the market that can match your dog’s needs and keep you happy, too.

Below are a few key selling points we think you should consider before you make your final decision.

    Purpose

The purpose of many conditioners is simply to soften the coat—but that’s not all! Some of them also nourish sensitive skin to prevent dryness or irritation. If the conditioner is very thin or doesn’t seem to really penetrate the coat, it won’t be worth your hard-earned money.

    De-Shedding

Some conditioners, such as our second choice, combat shed by helping you remove dead fur during washing. It penetrates deeply to remove any dander, dirt, debris, or shed in the undercoat. It is especially useful for double-coated breeds—or those that shed profusely.

Hypoallergenic or non-shedding dogs might not have the same benefit from these types of conditioners.

    Skin Nourishing

Not only can conditioners soften the coat, but they can also work wonders for the skin. So, if your pup is prone to dryness, itching, or flaking, adding conditioner into the grooming routine can work wonders. Of course, many of these are specialized conditioners, so be sure to read the labels!

    Quality

Quality is key when buying pet products. Not only will you want safe, reliable products, but you also want them to impress you. You can very easily tell the difference between cheaply made conditioners and premium kinds—all from the texture to the smell.

Often, cheap products will have a chemical or even rancid smell. They might be thin and hard to coat the fur. They might also wash out very easily and not visibly make any difference in the coat texture.

Excellent quality, on the other hand, will create a creamy texture that penetrates the fur. You can easily saturate without overusing, and the scent will be aromatic or simply mild if there is no added fragrance.

    Selecting Pet Shampoo

There are several things to consider when choosing the right pet shampoo. Finding formulas that are free of harsh chemicals, pH balanced, and curated to soothe irritation and restore moisture to the coat is imperative. It creates a great barrier and only amplifies the affects of a great conditioner.

    Our Favorite Products

Bathing your dog may be challenging, but selecting the right shampoo can help make the process a bit easier. Our favorite products come from Hepper’s Shampoo product line, offering natural, pet-friendly solutions meticulously designed to gently cleanse your dog’s skin and coat without any risk of irritating or drying them out. If you’re a fan of ramen noodles and wondering whether you can share a bowl with your dog, sorry, but no. Instant ramen and authentic ramen are bad for dogs.

While ramen is not immediately toxic to dogs when ingested, most of its components are neither healthy nor safe for them to consume, especially long-term and in large amounts.

In this article, we’re breaking down why you shouldn’t feed your dog ramen and what to do if they accidentally consume it.

    divider-paw

Why Instant Ramen Is Bad for Dogs

Instant ramen is classic comfort food. It’s cheap, comes in countless delicious flavors, and is ready in minutes. Unfortunately, ramen is not just unhealthy for humans but for dogs, too1. Here are the main reasons why instant ramen is unhealthy for dogs:

    Bowl of Ramen
Image By: Viridiana O Rivera, Pexels

    High Levels of Sodium

Ever wonder why instant ramen tastes so good for such an inexpensive meal? It is because it’s packed with sodium. For instance, this popular instant ramen brand contains 830 mg of sodium per serving.

In case you didn’t know, there are often TWO servings in ONE packet of instant ramen. So in just one packet, you’re consuming 1,660 mg of sodium—over half of the recommended daily amount for humans.

While dogs need sodium in their diet to maintain their fluid balance and regulate nerve and muscle function, they need very little of it.

Dogs should have a maximum of 15 mg of sodium per kilogram of body weight. For a 6.5-pound Chihuahua, that’s just 45 mg of sodium a day. A 65-pound Labrador should only have 450 mg a day—ideally, much less. Most dog food brands already include the proper amount of sodium, so there’s no need to give them any outside of their regular kibble.

Eating instant ramen would put your pup way over their daily sodium allowance. Too much salt can lead to serious health issues like dehydration, heart problems, electrolyte imbalances, and vomiting. In severe cases, it can lead to hypernatremia in dogs, a life-threatening condition caused by a high concentration of sodium in the bloodstream.

    Unsafe Seasonings

The seasonings added to instant ramen are also bad for your pup. Most of these seasonings contain high amounts of MSG, garlic, and onion—all of which can be toxic to dogs.

The MSG component is especially concerning, as it has been linked to neurological issues in dogs. Ingesting a significant amount of MSG can cause excessive excitement, restlessness, depression, disorientation, and convulsions in dogs.

Some ramen varieties also contain seasoning oils. These oils can upset your pup’s digestion, leading to vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration.

    Unhealthy Carbs & Empty Calories

Instant ramen may be filling, but it’s definitely not a health food. The noodle blocks are usually made of refined flour, salt, and oil. Dehydrating the noodles (to make them “instant” and give them a longer shelf life) involves frying them in oil and removing the moisture. This causes the calorie content to skyrocket and also makes it difficult for your pup to digest them.

The carbs in ramen noodles are also unhealthy. Refined flours have been stripped of most of their fiber and nutrient content. Consuming too many of these unhealthy carbs can lead to weight gain and other health problems in dogs.

This is why it’s bad for dogs to eat plain or raw ramen as well.

    Allergy Trigger

There are tons of potential allergens in instant ramen, such as soy and wheat. If your pup is sensitive to these ingredients, eating just a small amount can lead to stomach issues, skin reactions, and in severe unusual cases, even anaphylaxis.

    divider-paw

    How About Authentic Ramen?

Authentic ramen (the kind you can get in Japanese restaurants) has better flavor and uses higher-quality ingredients. Still, keep this human food to yourself.

That amazing ramen broth is too salty, fatty, and rich for dogs. Similar to instant ramen flavoring, it also contains ingredients that are toxic to dogs like onions and garlic. And while the noodles are certainly fresher, they’re made with the same basic ingredients that dogs shouldn’t eat: wheat flour, oil, water, salt, and a quick dip in alkaline water to give it that signature chewiness.

My Dog Accidentally Ate Ramen! What Should I Do?

Ramen is terribly unhealthy for dogs, but it’s not the end of the world if they eat a bit. If your dog is otherwise healthy, they’re likely not going to suffer any ill effects.

At most, they may have diarrhea and become extra thirsty due to the saltiness of ramen. Simply observe them for signs of distress like lethargy, vomiting, allergic reactions, or appetite loss. If their symptoms persist or worsen, contact your vet right away.

Beyond that, just make sure to keep the bowl away from their reach next time.

    divider-paw

    Conclusion

Ramen can be a convenient snack or meal to have around the house, but it doesn’t belong in your dog’s diet. From the insane salt content to the potential allergens, unsafe seasonings, and generally unhealthy ingredients, it’s just bad news all around for your pup.

Accidents do happen, so if your crafty canine does manage to slurp down some ramen, watch out for any negative effects. But in general, you’ve got nothing to worry about, and just remember to be more vigilant next time you enjoy a bowl.

  • 10 Best Dog Toys for Pit Bulls in 2024

10 Best Dog Toys for Pit Bulls in 2024

    [ad_1]

Pit Bulls are medium to large dogs with strong jaws. They are aggressive chewers, so the right toys are essential for them to have something that’s designed to be chewed on instead of things that they find around the house. Toys can also keep your dog from growing bored and help them get more exercise by playing.

Most dog toys will be destroyed over a long enough period, but Pit Bulls need something durable that doesn’t need to be replaced often. To help, we gathered the 10 best toys for Pit Bulls so you can check out the reviews and choose the one that looks like the most fun for your dog.

    divider-paw

A Quick Comparison of Our Favorites

The 10 Best Dog Toys for Pit Bulls

    1. Kong Extreme Ball Dog Toy — Best Overall

    Kong Extreme Ball Dog Toy

    Life stage: Adult
    Material: Rubber
    Feature: Exercise, chewing

The Kong Extreme Ball Dog Toy can be used in multiple ways. It’s made of durable rubber to withstand the most aggressive chewing. If your Pit Bull loves a good game of fetch, you won’t have to worry about them tearing this ball apart like an ordinary tennis ball. It also bounces higher and travels farther due to the thick rubber. It can also be used as a chew toy. Dogs can play with this ball by themselves because if it’s dropped, it bounces away, keeping the dogs entertained. For these reasons, this ball is the best overall dog toy for Pit Bulls.

The ball comes in small or medium/large, so you can choose the proper one for your Pit Bull’s size. This is an ideal toy for active, ball-loving dogs that can be destructive with their chewing. Some dog owners aren’t impressed with the ball’s size, though. Even the large one is too small for their dogs.

    Pros

    • Made of durable rubber
    • Bounces well
    • Keeps dogs entertained

    Cons

    • Too small for some dogs
    • No color variety

    2. Nylabone Power Chew Ring Dog Toy — Best Value

Nylabone Power Chew Textured Ring Dog Toy

    Life stage: Adult
    Material: Nylon
    Feature: Strong chewer, dental

The Nylabone Power Chew Textured Ring Dog Toy is made of durable nylon and tastes like chicken. The flavor attracts dogs and keeps them chewing, giving your Pit Bull a durable toy that won’t immediately disappear. The ring shape and textured design keep dogs from getting bored. Through chewing, your Pit Bull can also scrape plaque and tartar from their teeth, helping them maintain good dental health.

If you’d like to engage in play with your dog, you can roll this toy along the floor to have them chase after it. Once they capture it, they can continue chewing it as their reward. This long-lasting toy is the best dog toy for Pit Bulls for the money.

Some pieces can break off during chewing, so always monitor your dog when they’re using this ring. This is not suitable for small dogs that can try to swallow chunks that fall off the ring.

    Pros

    • Made of durable nylon
    • Enticing flavor
    • Encourage healthy chewing

    Cons

    • Not good for small dogs
    • Pieces can break off

    3. Puller Standard Fitness Tool Dog Toy — Premium Choice

Puller Standard Fitness Tool Dog Toy

    Life stage: Adult
    Material: Plastic
    Feature: Exercise

The strong plastic Puller Standard Fitness Tool Dog Toy can be used for games of fetch, tug of war, or fun in the water. The material is strong and durable but soft on teeth and jaws as dogs chew. It’s non-toxic and contains no odors.

This toy can give your dog the physical stimulation that they need every day by encouraging them to jump, run, and pull. With regular use, you can create a fitness routine for your Pit Bull. The toy was developed by professional cynologists who specialize in dog training. You get two rings in each purchase, along with a set of exercises that your dog can do with them.

Aggressive chewers may be able to chew through these rings over time, as no dog toy is indestructible. Some strong dogs can leave teeth marks on the rings.

    Pros

    • Versatile toy
    • Developed by cynologists
    • Encourages exercise and activity

    Cons

    • May be damaged by strong chewers

    4. HuggleHounds Bunny Dog Toy — Best for Puppies

HuggleHounds Barnyard Corduroy Knottie Bunny Dog Toy

    Life stage: Puppy, adult, senior
    Material: Polyester
    Feature: Squeaky, crinkle, exercise, teething

The HuggleHounds Barnyard Corduroy Knottier Bunny Dog Toy is a great option for puppies but is suitable for dogs of any age. The toy has a two-layer liner for durability. Knots in the arms and legs are added for chewing, shaking, and tugging. There are multiple squeakers inside to keep your dog entertained. This toy is strong enough for puppies who are just learning to chew or for relieving pain associated with teething.

When the bunny gets dirty, it can conveniently be tossed in the washing machine. Aggressive chewers may be able to destroy this plush toy quickly, but Pit Bull puppies can learn how to play with toys using this bunny. It can also be used to show puppies correct chewing etiquette so they leave your toes and fingers alone.

    Pros

    • Durable lining stands up to chewing
    • Contains squeakers
    • Machine washable

    Cons

    • May be destroyed quickly by strong chewers

    5. Outward Hound Snake Plush Dog Toy

Outward Hound Snake Plush Dog Toy

    Life stage: Adult
    Material: Polyester
    Feature: Squeaky, stuffing free, exercise

You can choose either a three-squeaker or 12-squeaker Outward Hound Snake Plush Toy, depending on the size of your Pit Bull. The toy is designed with tough chewers in mind and doesn’t contain stuffing. If your dog manages to tear it open, you won’t be left with a mess to clean up.

Two layers of durable fabric reinforce this toy so your dog can toss, catch, chase, and tug all they want. The snake shape is engaging and fun, and the squeakers make fun sounds for dogs. Some dogs have been able to destroy these snakes in just a few minutes, so your Pit Bull’s chewing ability should be considered before buying this toy. They hold up longer than other, plushier options, but no toy is truly invincible.

    Pros

    • Comes in two sizes
    • No stuffing for no mess
    • Double-layered fabric for durability

    Cons

    • May be destroyed quickly
    • Aggressive chewers can puncture the squeakers

    6. Pet Zone IQ Treat Dispenser Ball Dog Toy

Pet Zone IQ Treat Dispenser Ball Dog Toy

    Life stage: Adult
    Material: Plastic
    Feature: Exercise

The Pet Zone IQ Treat Dispenser Ball Dog Toy will keep your dog engaged and entertained by rewarding them with treats as they roll the ball. Fill the ball with your dog’s dry kibble or favorite treats, and set the difficulty level. Your Pit Bull will work to get their rewards, figuring out the best way to get the food out of there. This can keep them busy for long periods when you aren’t home or don’t have the time to dedicate to your dog at the moment.

The ball also encourages physical activity, helping your dog burn more calories. They stay mentally engaged and interested. To clean the ball, simply open it up and wash it with soap and water. This treat ball is also a solution for dogs that eat too quickly. Fill the ball with your dog’s kibble meal, and let them eat it one piece at a time.

Some dog owners reported that it broke after just a few uses. The ball is also loud as it rolls across hardwood floors.

    Pros

    • Encourages slow eating
    • Keeps dogs interested and engaged
    • Promotes exercise
    • Easily cleaned

    Cons

    • May break easily
    • Creates loud noises as it rolls

    7. Mammoth Tirebiter II Dog Toy

    Mammoth Tirebiter II Dog Toy

    Life stage: Adult, puppy
    Material: Rubber
    Feature: Tough chewer, exercise

The Mammoth Tirebiter II Dog Toy is made of durable, natural rubber for strong chewers. It’s available in three sizes. The tire can be rolled, thrown, tossed, or used as a tug toy to keep your Pit Bull entertained and active.

The shape of the tire encourages interactive play and chewing, so dogs can get exercise and stay physically engaged. The large size is suitable for large dog breeds. It’s great for outdoor use because of its durability and can be easily cleaned with soap and water. While the rubber material is strong, it’s flexible enough to not hurt teeth or gums while the dogs chew it.

    Pros

    • Made of durable rubber
    • Encourages interactive play
    • Easily cleaned

    Cons

    • The large size may still be too small for some dogs

    8. ZippyPaws Hedgehog Plush Dog Toy

    ZippyPaws Hedgehog Plush Dog Toy

    Life stage: Adult, puppy
    Material: Polyester
    Feature: Squeaky, plush

This ZippyPaws Hedgehog Plush Dog Toy includes one squeaker inside and comes in a compact, round shape for throwing and fetching. Not every dog will immediately try to rip the squeaker out of a plush toy. Pit Bulls have a reputation for being aggressive chewers, but this is an option for those that aren’t. If your Pit Bull is gentle with their toys, this plush hedgehog might be a nice addition to their toy box.

The hedgehog comes in two sizes. It’s also comfortable and soft to snuggle up against for a nap after playtime. While it’s a durable toy, it won’t hold up against strong chewers. If your dog likes to chew, this isn’t a suitable option. For non-destructive dogs, this can be fun for them to chase and bite to make it squeak.

    Pros

    • Soft and plush
    • Includes one large squeaker
    • Round shape for throwing, catching, and tossing

    Cons

    • Easily destroyed
    • Will not withstand strong chewing

    9. Jolly Pets Teaser Ball Dog Toy

Jolly Pets Teaser Ball Dog Toy

    Life stage: Adult
    Material: Plastic
    Feature: Water toy

The Jolly Pets Teaser Ball Dog Toy is a ball within a ball, which entertains dogs and keeps them active even during solo play. If you have a pool or like to bring your Pit Bull to the lake, this ball floats, so it also makes a suitable water toy. As the ball rolls, the smaller ball inside spins erratically, enticing your dog to chase it. They will try to remove the small ball from the larger one; while it can’t be done, it keeps them busy.

If you want to keep your dog even more entertained, spread some peanut butter on the inside of the outer ball. To clean, simply wash with soap and warm water. The toy is made with non-toxic and BPA-free materials, making it safe for your Pit Bull to chew.

    Pros

    • Floats on water
    • Encourages chasing and playing
    • Easy to clean
    • Non-toxic

    Cons

    • Too small for some large dogs
    • Plastic can be damaged over time by chewing

    10. JW Pet iSqueak Bouncin’ Baseball Dog Toy

JW Pet iSqueak Bouncin’ Baseball Dog Toy

    Life stage: Adult, puppy
    Material: Rubber
    Feature: Squeaky, exercise

The design of the JW Pet iSqueak Bouncin’ Baseball Dog Toy is perfect for dogs to carry, toss, and catch. The rubber material makes the ball bounce high for added fun and will stand up to tough chewing. This is a suitable option for teething puppies that are learning to play with toys.

The rubber is durable, but this toy won’t stand up to truly aggressive chewers that intend on shredding it. This is a good option for games of fetch or to keep your dog entertained for a while, but it’s not a chew toy.

The ball floats on water and can be easily cleaned with soap and water.

    Pros

    • Comfortable design
    • Good for teething puppies
    • Fun for games of fetch in the water

    Cons

    • Won’t stand up to aggressive chewing

Buyer’s Guide: How to Select the Best Dog Toys for Pit Bulls

Shopping for toys for your Pit Bull can be overwhelming because there are so many options available. Here are a few things to keep in mind to help make the decision easier.

    Durability

Pit Bulls love to chew and have strong jaws, so they can destroy most toys fairly quickly. If you choose a toy that is not built to last or stand up to strong chewing, it will be demolished easily, and you’ll have to replace it. This will waste your money and lead to a bored dog that has their fun ended too soon.

    Your Dog’s Preferences

Different dogs like different features of toys. Some prefer squeaky toys while others like balls. Some like plush toys while others like chew toys. If your dog isn’t interested in a ball, they won’t want to play with one even if you buy the best one that you can find. Choose toys that you know your dog likes, and keep a variety of them to swap them around so your dog doesn’t get bored.

    Use

Toys that can be used in different ways are ideal because they save you money and keep your dog entertained. Toys that can be thrown, caught, and used for tug of war are great options. If you can use these toys outdoors, especially in the water or the snow, that’s even better.

    two pitbulls playing

    Safety

It’s important to never leave your dog unsupervised with a toy that has sharp edges or pieces that can be chewed off and swallowed. The toys that you choose should be safe for your Pit Bull.

    Pit Bulls & Toys

Pit Bulls are power chewers and need to have something to gnaw on. If they don’t, they will decide that anything around your home is suitable for their chewing needs. Not giving them toys will make them resort to chewing pillows, cushions, table legs, shoes, remote controls, and anything else that they can find. These items present dangers to your dog if pieces of them are swallowed, and they are also expensive to replace. Replacing toys as they become damaged is far cheaper.

Why Are Pit Bulls Such Strong Chewers?

Pit Bulls have large heads, which means large teeth and jaws. They also have wide jaws, which enables them to apply more leverage as they are chewing. This helps them go through an object in a matter of minutes, whether it’s a toy or something that you don’t want them chewing.

    Keep Your Pit Bull Safe

While you want to give your dog the best toys possible, it’s important to remember that no dog toy is indestructible forever. Even the most durable toys will wear out and break over time.

If you notice any wear on your dog’s toy or anything that might present a safety issue, take the toy away and dispose of it. The cost of a new toy is much cheaper than hospital bills for your dog if they swallow a piece of plastic or hurt themselves.

Avoid using toys that your dog could fit their muzzle inside of and get it stuck. For example, large rings should always be given to your dog when you can supervise them. Use caution giving your dog anything that could get stuck around their mouths or in their noses.

The toys that you give your dog should not be small enough to be swallowed by them. It’s always safer to give your dog a toy that might be too large for them than too small.

Don’t leave your dog unattended while they’re playing with toys, and remember to dispose of old, worn toys and replace them with new ones. This will make your dog happy too.

    Conclusion

The Kong Extreme Ball Dog Toy is our best overall dog toy for Pit Bulls. It’s made of durable rubber and can keep dogs entertained with its bounciness. The Nylabone Power Chew Textured Ring Dog Toy is a budget-friendly option that encourages dogs to chew by having a tasty chicken flavor. If money is no option, the Puller Standard Fitness Tool Dog Toy is another fantastic toy choice. We hope that you’ve enjoyed these reviews and were able to find the best dog toy for your Pit Bull!

Grain-free diets may be linked to heart problems in dogs, although studies to prove this are still ongoing. Talk to your vet about whether a grain-free diet is necessary for your Belgian Malinois.

    Pros

    • Grain-free
    • Unique ingredients
    • High in meat-based proteins
    • Supports your dog’s heart, immune system, and digestion

    Cons

    • Pricey
    • Grain free diets may not work for every dog

    6. Wellness Large Breed Complete Health Deboned Chicken and Brown Rice Dog Food

Wellness Large Breed Complete Health Deboned Chicken and Brown Rice Recipe

Main Ingredients: Deboned chicken, chicken meal, ground brown rice, barley, peas
    Protein Content: 26% min.
    Fat Content: 12% min.
    Calories: 340 kcal/cup

The Belgian Malinois is considered a large-breed dog. That’s why we recommend Wellness Large Breed Complete Health dog food as one of the best foods for your Belgian Malinois. This particular formula is made with deboned chicken and brown rice as two of the main ingredients, so your dog is sure to love the flavor. Deboned chicken provides a good source of lean meat protein to keep your dog’s muscles healthy and in good condition.

It’s also incredibly low in fat and calories, so it’s a good choice for dogs that need to maintain a healthy weight or if you want to prevent your dog from gaining weight. It also doesn’t contain any filler ingredients, meat by-products, or artificial preservatives. Plus, the added fruit and vegetable ingredients provide an excellent source of fatty acids and probiotics. The downside is that it is pricey, but that’s to be expected with high-quality dog food. It also contains grains such as barley and oats, which may not be good for dogs with allergies or sensitive stomachs.

    Pros

    • Low in fat and calories
    • Made with real chicken
    • Free of fillers and artificial preservatives

    Cons

    • Pricey
    • May not be good for dogs with sensitive stomachs

    7. Blue Buffalo Life Protection Formula Healthy Weight Adult Dog Food

Blue Buffalo Life Protection Formula Healthy Weight Adult Dog Food

Main Ingredients: Deboned chicken, chicken meal, brown rice, barley, pea fiber
    Protein Content: 20% min.
    Fat Content: 9% min.
    Calories: 324 kcal/cup

We like Blue Buffalo Life Protection Formula Healthy Weight dog food for a Belgian Malinois because being overweight or obese is a big problem with large breed dogs. This dog food has less than 10% fat and is low in calories as well to ensure that your dog doesn’t gain an unhealthy amount of weight into adulthood. Plus, this particular food is the adult dog version of the puppy product on this list (number 4), so your Belgian Malinois can continue with a similar diet as he transitions from a puppy to an adult.

Another thing we like about this dog food is that it is made with real chicken, not chicken by-products, for a high-quality and flavorful protein ingredient that your dog is sure to love. This food is great for keeping your dog’s muscles lean as well as promoting strong bones and teeth due to calcium, phosphorus, and other minerals that are found in various ingredients. The downside is that it is a bit lower in protein than other dog foods.

    Pros

    • Low in fat and calories
    • Made with real chicken
    • Helps your dog maintain a healthy weight

    Cons

    • Contains less protein than other foods

    8. Diamond Naturals Chicken and Rice Formula All Life Stages Dog Food

Diamond Naturals Chicken and Rice Formula All Life Stages Dog Food

Main Ingredients: Chicken, chicken meal, whole grain brown rice, cracked pearled barley, white rice
    Protein Content: 26% min.
    Fat Content: 16% min.
    Calories: 421 kcal/cup

Diamond Naturals Chicken and Rice Formula All Life Stages Dog Food is good for dogs of any age or size, but we like it for Belgian Malinois dogs because it has a high protein content which is ideal for keeping your dog’s muscles lean. It is a bit higher in fat than other dog foods, so it may not be the best choice if your dog is overweight. But for dogs that are a healthy weight, the fat content can provide the right amount of energy your dog needs as well.

This dog food is also rich in prebiotics and probiotics, both of which support healthy digestion, and antioxidants that support a healthy immune system. It’s a great choice for dogs that spend a lot of time outdoors, plus it is more affordable than other high-quality dog foods. However, chicken is the only protein ingredient, which is one of the most common protein allergies in dogs.

    Pros

    • Affordable
    • High in protein
    • Good for dogs of all ages

    Cons

    • Chicken is a common protein allergy in dogs

    9. Hill’s Science Diet Adult Sensitive Stomach and Skin Chicken Recipe

Hill’s Science Diet Adult Sensitive Stomach and Skin Chicken Recipe

Main Ingredients: Chicken, chicken meal, yellow rice, cracked pearled barley, brown rice
    Protein Content: 20% min.
    Fat Content: 13% min.
    Calories: 394 kcal/cup

Dogs can suffer from allergies and intolerances just like humans. If your Belgian Malinois suffers from a sensitive stomach, digestive issues, or allergies, then we suggest giving Hill’s Science Diet Adult Sensitive Stomach and Skin dog food a try. With chicken as the main protein ingredient, this food contains other ingredients that are easily digestible and contain prebiotics so that your dog doesn’t end up with an upset stomach as a result of his food.

Allergies can also affect a dog’s skin, but this food contains vitamin E and fatty acids that also support skin and coat health. It’s also veterinarian-recommended, so if your dog suffers from a sensitive stomach, ask your vet about this food. It may not be good for dogs that don’t have sensitive stomachs, as it is lower in protein than other dog foods. But it has a good fat content and low calories to help your dog maintain a healthy weight.

    Pros

    • Low in fat and calories
    • Veterinarian recommended
    • Great for dogs with sensitive stomachs

    Cons

    • Lower in protein than other foods
    • May not be good for dogs without digestive issues

    10. Rachael Ray Nutrish Real Beef, Pea, and Brown Rice Recipe Dog Food

Rachael Ray Nutrish Real Beef, Pea, and Brown Rice Recipe Dog Food

Main Ingredients: Beef, beef meal, soybean meal, whole corn, grain sorghum
    Protein Content: 25% min.
    Fat Content: 14% min.
    Calories: 326 kcal/cup

We like this Rachael Ray Nutrish dog food for Belgian Malinois dogs because it is one of the few high-protein dog foods that is made with beef. Although beef isn’t often as lean as chicken, it’s not bad for dogs and can offer a unique flavor in case your dog doesn’t like chicken or fish. This dog food also doesn’t contain any filler ingredients and it is affordable and very low in calories.

One of the downsides to this food is that the kibbles are a bit larger than other dog foods, so it may be hard for puppies or senior dogs to eat and digest. It also contains corn, which may be harder to digest as well. But, it’s made without artificial flavors and preservatives, as well as containing ingredients that are full of omega fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals for an all-around balanced diet.

    Pros

    • Affordable
    • Beef provides a savory flavor
    • Contains no artificial flavors or preservatives

    Cons

    • Contains corn
    • Larger kibbles may be harder to eat

    11. Purina Pro Plan High Protein Shredded Blend Chicken and Rice Formula with Probiotics

Purina Pro Plan High Protein Shredded Blend Chicken and Rice Formula with Probiotics

Main Ingredients: Chicken, rice, whole grain wheat, poultry by-product meal, soybean meal
    Protein Content: 26% min.
    Fat Content: 16% min.
    Calories: 387 kcal/cup

Purina Pro Plan High Protein Shredded Blend Chicken and Rice Formula is a good budget-friendly choice for your Belgian Malinois. This food is high in protein and has real chicken as the main ingredient.  However, it does contain some chicken by-products as well which aren’t the most high-quality source of protein. But what’s unique about this food is that it contains both hard kibble and shredded pieces to provide texture to your dog. This is designed to keep him interested in the food.

This dog food also contains a lot of probiotics to help keep your dog’s digestive system healthy, as well as vitamin A and fatty acids to support a healthy coat and skin. It is a bit higher in fat than other foods, but it is lower in calories than other food as well. Another downside is that this food contains corn which can be hard for dogs to digest, but overall, the food provides a well-balanced diet.

    Pros

    • Affordable
    • High protein
    • Contains both hard and shredded kibble

    Cons

    • Contains corn
    • Contains chicken by-products
    • Higher in fat than other foods

Buyer’s Guide – Choosing the Best Dog Food for a Belgian Malinois

Hopefully, after seeing our recommendations for the best dog food for your Belgian Malinois, you’ve decided which one you want to try. But in case you still need a little more guidance, we’ve created this Buyer’s Guide complete with everything you need to know about choosing the best food for your dog.

    Ingredients

One of the biggest things you’ll want to consider when choosing a dog food is the variety of ingredients. Proteins are essential for helping your Belgian Malinois maintain a healthy lifestyle, but proteins can come from two sources: meat and vegetables.

Meat proteins are better for your dog’s muscle health, and the best dog foods will always have some type of meat listed for at least the first three ingredients. You’ll want real meats as well, not meat by-products. Examples include chicken, fish, beef, lamb, etc. The actual type of meat you choose ultimately just depends on what your dog likes best, but at least you’ll know what to look for as far as ingredients are concerned.

Other ingredients you’ll want to look for are healthy fruits and vegetables that provide nutrients such as antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and omega fatty acids. These ingredients work to support other parts of your dog’s body besides just muscles, such as heart health, skin health, and digestive health.

    Age and Health

Something else you’ll want to consider is the age and health of your dog. For example, puppy foods often contain different ingredients than adult dog foods because they are designed to aid in the proper development of your puppy as he grows into an adult. Puppy foods also usually contain smaller kibbles to make it easier for your puppy to chew.

Senior dogs may also have a hard time chewing and digesting food, so you may want to opt for a formula that is designed for senior dogs or has smaller or softer kibbles. Senior dogs are also more prone to weight gain, but dogs of any age can become overweight. If your dog’s weight is a concern, look for foods that are lower in fat and calories.

Finally, keep in mind any additional health conditions that your dog may have. Depending on those conditions, you may need a dog food that isn’t on this list or one that is veterinarian recommended. If this applies to you, be sure to ask your vet for recommendations.

    Budget

Finally, you’ll need to take your budget into concern as well. High-quality dog food is best for any dog, but especially working dogs such as the Belgian Malinois. You can expect to pay a lot for high-quality dog food, but there are some options that are cheaper than others.

Make sure that whatever dog food you choose, you’re able to continue to afford it over time if your dog likes it. You can always buy a smaller bag to save money in that instant, but buying smaller bags may not save the most money over time. And remember, you don’t have to buy the most expensive dog food because it seems like the better option. It may not be the best option for your dog’s dietary needs.

    Conclusion

We hope you found these dog food reviews and Buyer’s Guide helpful when deciding on the best food for your Belgian Malinois.

All in all, we think that the best overall dog food is The Farmer’s Dog while the best value dog food is the American Journey Active Life Formula Salmon, Brown Rice, and Vegetables Recipe.

Whatever food you choose, we hope your Belgian Malinois loves it and gets super excited for feeding time.

    Our Final Verdict

We give the All About Vibe Custom Shape Pillow a rating of 4.9 out of 5 stars.

    Quality: 5/5

    Image Reproduction: 4.8/5

    Comfort: 5/5

    Material: 5/5

    Value: 5/5

As a dog mom, I always have my pup in mind when it comes to decorating. Having various memorabilia and reproductions of her adorable face is a common theme in my home! A pillow is definitely on the list of things I need my dog’s face on. A pillow is something I can travel with and remember my sweet pup no matter where in the world I am.

However, finding a good quality pillow isn’t always the easiest thing. Not all companies are able to reproduce photographs well, and not all pillows are soft and comfortable. All About Vibe takes this desire to a whole new level by offering custom-shaped pillows rather than just slapping a photo on a square. This makes each pillow one-of-a-kind and created just for you.

Many of my pet-parent friends share the same sentiment, so a unique gift like this is equally on the agenda for birthdays and holidays!

    Overview

All About Vibe Custom Shape Pillow - preview of the custom design

These pillows are unlike others in the market, predominantly because they are custom-shaped to your photograph!

    Pricing

The price ranges from $15 to $80, depending on the size selected.

This makes their pillows more expensive (on average) than those of many standard competitors, but unlike those of other companies in the industry, these pillows are not square or rectangular. They are custom-shaped! The price feels more justified as a result of this fact.

    Sizes

    The sizes offered are:

    • Keychain 4”
    • Ornament 4”
    • Mini 10”
    • Small 16”
    • Medium 22”
    • Large 30”

Make note that the above are approximate sizes, as the pillows are cut and shaped based on the image you want reproduced.

All About Vibe Custom Shape Pillow - custom pillow on sofa

    Material

All of the pillows are made of ultra-soft velvet polyester fabric. They are soft and well-stuffed, squishy and comfortable!

The pillow is machine-washable; just be sure to use a cold cycle to preserve the vibrant colors.

    Image Reproduction

The background is extracted and your pet is set on white. Images are reproduced on both sides of the pillow. For quality, clear images, the reproduction is top-notch! The colors are vibrant and beautiful, and your pet is nice and sharp!

The best photographs to use are those that show your pet’s whole body, whether they are sitting, standing, or lying down! That’s because the way the pillow is custom-cut per photograph, it makes more sense to see your pet’s legs and cute paws.

However, images of all-white animals where there is only subtle detail in the coat have a bit of a more challenging time being reproduced (I noticed this in my primarily white dog, but more on this when I talk about my personal experience). This being said the pillow is stunning, and it’s not a deal breaker at all – printers can only do as much as they can!

All about vibe pillow side by side

    Shipping

The pillows are made in Chicago, Illinois, and take about three to five business days to make. Shipping rates range from $5.95 for standard shipping, $14.95 for priority shipping, and $39.95 for expedited shipping.

    Warranty and Guarantee

All of the pillows come with a lifetime guarantee! This means that if your pet damages the pillow, All About Vibe will send you a replacement.

If you’re unhappy with the pillow for any reason, All About Vibe has a 100% Satisfaction Guarantee, so they will work with you diligently to ensure you love your pillow.

    In Summary

    Pros

    • Custom-shaped one-of-a-kind pillows
    • You can use any image you want
    • Various sizes available
    • Retouching included
    • High-quality material that is soft and comfortable
    • Lifetime warranty with 100% satisfaction guarantee
    • Simple to order

    Key Features

All About Vibe Custom Shape Pillow - close up of the pillow

    Fully Custom

The pillow is truly a custom process – all pillows start from raw materials and are hand-done in the USA to match the photo uploaded. The pillow is shaped based on the submitted photograph, so unless two people submit the same image, each product is unique!

I cannot stress how fantastic this is, as you aren’t stuck with a standard square or rectangle shape anymore. This also makes the pillows so much more huggable.

    Quality

The pillow feels super soft, squishy, and brilliantly made. The material (velvet polyester) is great, and the image quality is very high. The pillows are also relatively durable and can be machine-washed easily.

It’s not too easy to print an image onto fabric like that, and All About Vibe has figured out a great way to do it.

    Various Sizes Available

There are six options in sizes available, with custom sizes possible if you reach out to customer service. Of the six sizes, this makes excellent gift or decor options for any room.

    Reproduce Any Photograph

You can have any photograph you love turned into a pillow – whether it’s a cell phone snap or something from a professional camera. This opens the door to endless possibilities.

    Retouching Included

Retouching is included (within reason, of course!) – you can leave notes when ordering on what you want to be removed. Common requests include removing leashes, collars, and stuff like that! So you don’t need to worry about a pesky eyesore in your favorite photo.

    dogster paw divider

Is the Custom Shape Pillow a Good Value?

Priced at $15 for the 4” keychain or ornament pillow all the way to $80 for the 30” pillow, some might consider the prices to be on the higher side in comparison to competitive companies. With free shipping not being an option, that might be another thorn for some people.

However, I will be completely honest with you: this is the highest quality pillow I have ever gotten from any custom company. It is beautiful, perfectly stuffed, and feels so soft. More importantly, however, is that my dog looks awesome on it. I would say it is worth the price, especially since I can already feel that this pillow will last a lifetime.

On that note, the lifetime guarantee also makes this pillow worth every penny. You can get a replacement should something happen to it! All of this makes this pillow an excellent value.

Our Experience With All About Vibe

My pup Lorelei is eight years old as of this January, and we have been inseparable for all of the years she’s been with me. This dog is my world, and so much of my home reflects that! I love my memorabilia with her, from photo prints to mugs.

I (surprisingly) did not yet have a pillow with her face on it, so I was very excited about what All About Vibe offers. Especially as I have a few weeks of work trips coming up that my little one cannot come to, and this pillow might be something that helps the separation on my end a lot! The fact that the pillow is shaped based on my dog just makes it that much more special.

Creating the pillow is as easy as possible – just upload the photo (it must be JPG or PNG, but that’s pretty common!), add editing notes (I asked for the leash to be removed), and then select the size. There is a mock-up that shows an approximation of what the image will look like, but since I wanted the leash taken out, it wasn’t too accurate – but I trusted the process!

When my pillow arrived, I was blown away. The pillow was shaped so beautifully, matching my dog’s perky ears! Honestly, that is probably my favorite part, as those ears are the most prominent characteristic. The fabric is so soft, velvety, and luscious; it feels very high quality. The stuffing was also the perfect amount, not too firm but not too soft that the pillow would lose its shape. The seams are excellently done as well; I can truly feel the quality that was put into this product.

My only (minor) comment is that because the pillow can only be done on white, my dog got lost in the image a little bit – there was a lack of contrast, which I think those with white dogs should be mindful of. We lost a bit of detail in her coat in the reproduction. That being said, I am still absolutely obsessed with my pillow – this is probably my favorite pet-centric item I own now!

    Conclusion

From your own home decor to a fantastic gift for loved ones, the custom pillow from All About Vibe is a brilliant idea. Your beloved pet can forever be memorialized in a soft and comfortable pillow, which can be put in any room of the house or taken with you during travels. I can’t think of anything better!

    Our Final Verdict

We give Dogo App a rating of 4.9 out of 5 stars.

    Quality: 5/5

    Variety: 5/5

    Communication: 5/5

    Ease of Use: 5/5

    Training Efficacy: 5/5

    App Reliability: 4.9/5

As much as we wish our dogs could come to us with all the knowledge of good behavior, this is not the case! Training is a lifelong commitment, and training itself is the difference between a dog built for success and a dog set up for failure. As pet parents, we want our dogs to succeed in life and get as much fulfillment out of it as possible!

Finding the right trainer, regiment, and time for classes can be a real hassle (and is often why dog parents are deterred from involving themselves with training). A slew of hack trainers in the market use aggressive and negative tactics to scare dogs into submission. An actual positive reinforcement trainer isn’t simple to find because this is not a quick-fix solution, but we owe it to our dogs to treat them right.

The Dogo App is revolutionizing the way we think of dog training and putting the trainers in the palm of our hands. An hour lunch break can now become a training session, helping curb bad behaviors and encouraging better ones. Focused on positive reinforcement, the Dogo App trains you just as much as it trains your dog! It is an entire philosophy that builds bonds and trust while getting Fido to stop chewing your shoes. Win/win, right?

    About Dogo

dogo app - sit and stay lesson for lorelei

The Dogo App is a personalized dog training app that lives conveniently on your cell phone so you can train anywhere anytime! Unlike dog training books or preset online courses, the Dogo App offers a questionnaire to get to know your pup better – and tailor the training to your dog’s needs. The app is supposed to be a complimentary addition to dog ownership, including other valuable features such as weight tracking, vaccination reminders, feeding schedules, and more. The idea is that it is quick and easy to open up a training plan and follow it!

Unlike many corporate services that wedge into the pet industry, the Dogo App was inspired by one special dog: Udra. When Dogo App founders Rasa and Tadas adopted Udra, they enrolled in puppy schools, watched YouTube videos, read up on training, and the like. The two saw an opportunity to streamline this process and make it fun rather than tedious, so the Dogo App was born! Rasa, a veterinary doctor, and Tadas, a software developer, worked together to bring the concept to fruition.

To this day, Dogo App partners with veterinarians, dog trainers worldwide, and other professionals to bring about as much dog knowledge as possible. You can tell that dog owners built the Dogo App for dog owners, as every aspect of the program revolves around pet care.

    Overview

    Pricing

The Dogo App is a subscription service that can be paid quarterly, monthly, or weekly. The app costs $49.99 every three months, $29.99 monthly, or $9.99 weekly!

New users are often met with a 50% off code for the first week, first month, or first three months (billed at the standard rate beyond that).

Each pricing tier includes the same perks, such as unlimited trainer feedback and lesson plans, unlimited vaccine and weight tracking, up to five dogs registered, five family members registered, a dog clicker and whistle, and a digital certificate of completion.

    Lesson Plans

Upon signing up for the Dogo App, you are given a questionnaire to help curate your lesson plan based on what you and your dog may need. This ranges from walking nicely on a leash, foundation commands (such as sit, stay, down, place, etc.), tricks, no biting, and so much more.

Once the questionnaire is complete, lesson plans will populate in your app under your account. You can flip through and select what lesson you want to work on that day.

Each lesson plan in the app includes an estimate of the duration of time for your dog to learn the command or lesson, an instructional video, a step-by-step guide, a timer for when you start the lesson, and a virtual clicker tool to help with your training. Once you mark the lesson as complete, some questions will appear – based on your answers, more options present themselves (such as trying a different lesson, re-doing the lesson, and more).

    Ease of Use

The app is incredibly straightforward to grasp, with buttons for everything you need. The instructional videos assist in your daily lessons, and you also have contact with your assigned trainer. All in all, pretty fool-proof!

    Communication With a Trainer

If selected to work with a trainer, you have access to a certified professional during your subscription to Dogo App. Every month includes a certain number of videos to upload for feedback from the trainer and a messaging option to talk with your trainer. You can send your assigned trainer videos and have them critique and encourage your progress.

    Additional Features

Dogo App has several features outside dog training that make pet ownership easier. This includes:

    • Schedule and activity tracker
    • Health reminders (vaccinations, vet appointments, grooming appointments, etc.)

    Key Features

Dogo App side by side 2

The features you can find on the Dogo App set it apart in the training market; there isn’t anything quite like it.

    Mobile Interface

The mobile interface means you have no excuse not to train – a dog trainer is in your pocket! The interface also has a clicker and whistle as tools.

    Available in Multiple Languages

The Dogo App is available in 12 languages, so many can enjoy its benefits.

    Entire Household Can Integrate

Each account allows up to five family members to join, so training can remain consistent for your dog. A big part of training success is ensuring everyone is on the same page; otherwise, your pup will get mixed signals.

    Positive Reinforcement Training

All of the lessons are positive-focused, rather than negative. Multiple scientific studies on animal behavior and training retention have shown that positive reinforcement training works significantly better than negative reinforcement training.

Positive reinforcement training is when your dog is rewarded for good behavior (with treats, praise, and toys) and ignored when they demonstrate bad behavior. Dogs are more likely to repeat good behavior because of the positive reward than to continue with bad behavior.

dogo app - sit and stay lesson

Lessons are Customized to Your Needs

Because of the questionnaire that is required to sign up, the entire lesson plan is customized to your needs. After each lesson, the app considers your feedback to add or remove lesson plans.

If selected (which is highly recommended!) you get paired up with a professional dog trainer. As the dog owner, you can submit videos of training sessions for feedback and have an open chat with your assigned trainer.

    Built-In Pet Care Reminders

Alongside training, the Dogo App also serves as a pet-care aid, offering a platform to schedule vaccination and grooming reminders, keep track of care appointments, and more.

    Clicker and Whistle In-App

If you don’t have a physical clicker or can’t whistle, the app has both sounds available.

Educational Articles on Website and App

As an additional resource, the Dogo App has many articles to read about dog behavior, care, nutrition, and so much more. These articles are available on the website’s Blog page or within the app itself.

Is the Dogo App a Good Value?

The average cost of group training classes is around $150 – $300 per six classes/six weeks. In these classes, you have to divide your time with other dogs. Private training sessions can easily reach into the $1,000 range.

The Dogo App is $49.99 every three months, $29.99 monthly, or $9.99 weekly and offers the same kind of curriculum you’d find in most dog training classes, except that you get to skip over what your dog already knows and do what your dog needs to learn next.

Whether or not the Dogo App is a good value is quite obvious here! You will not only save a lot of money, but you get to take a “class” every day, still have access to a dog trainer, and have each lesson personalized to you and your dog.

Our Experience With the Dogo App

My dog Lorelei is about 8 years old now (this is a best guess, as she came from the animal shelter) and there are still certain behaviors that we need to tighten up on. I don’t work a normal 9-to-5 schedule, it changes daily – so consistent training classes are a bit of a no-go for us because I can’t keep to the same time each day! The Dogo App sounded like a great solution for an unconventional schedule.

Upon registering, I was asked questions about my dog, such as her age. Equally, behavior questions about potty training, leash walking, biting, and of the sort started flowing as well. My answers began to narrow down the lesson plan! My dog is long potty trained and doesn’t bite, but isn’t perfect on a leash and some foundation work isn’t as solid as it used to be.

The last question asked if I wanted to have a dog trainer assigned to me, to which I selected “yes” and was assigned Jenny. I was given her photo and bio, so it felt a lot more personal!

As soon as the questionnaire ended, I was shown my lesson plan right off the bat along with an estimate of how long the program is (in my case, 21 days). The breakdown was thorough, even before I signed up for the subscription! Once the subscription process was finished, I was emailed a direct link to download the app. My link was personal, so as soon as I downloaded the app through that email, I was logged in (super nifty).

Right away I dug into the lesson plans. Before the lesson even started was a kind of pop quiz question that tested my training knowledge, a bit of a fun game! Once the lessons opened, each one that I was given for my pup (as well as some bonus idea lessons that I didn’t select, but the algorithm figured I might be interested in. It was right!) opened to a video example, a lot of details (including information on what Lorelei will learn – and what I will learn), and a timespan to work under. When I started a lesson, a timer would appear for the preset duration of time it should take!

The lessons were positive-based with lots of rewards and easy to follow. They made logical sense, and I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly my dog took to them.

At the end of each lesson I was presented with questions that revolved around our success rate (or lack thereof) and options would adjust based on my responses. I liked the consistent inquiries because I could tell that, once more, the algorithm was tailored just for us. I could always upload a video to my assigned trainer or contact her for help.

The additional tools in the app (conveniently located in the tabs at the bottom of the screen) make Lorelei’s daily ownership easier as well – I could record and monitor her weight, put in any appointments as reminders, and so much more. The training streak is also a nice feature, makes you feel pretty accomplished by training every day! All in all, Lorelei responded very positively to this news activity we do daily, and I couldn’t be happier with that.

It’s very convenient to be told what to do rather than trying to figure it out alone. Although it has only been a short time so far, I can see how much my dog has already improved – and will only continue so!

    Conclusion

In conclusion, the Dogo App fits perfectly into the modern lifestyle because of its convenient phone applications. Use it to train your dog whenever the day grants you some extra time! The lessons are easy to follow with video instruction and target the specific behaviors you need your furry best friend to know.

The app also removes the need to trial and error many dog trainers to find what works for you. With positive reinforcement training, your bond with Fido will grow even stronger than before. All in all, a brilliant service!

Causes, Signs & Treatment – Dogster

    [ad_1]

When a dog’s thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones, a condition called hypothyroidism occurs. Middle-aged and older dogs are most commonly affected. Thyroid hormones help regulate many internal functions, such as metabolism and heart rate. When these hormones are low, vital functions are impaired and signs develop. Fortunately, with early detection and treatment, most hypothyroid dogs have a normal life expectancy.

    Causes of hypothyroidism in dogs

Lymphocytic thyroiditis, an immune-mediated condition, is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in dogs. It occurs when the immune system attacks and destroys the thyroid gland, resulting in significant inflammation and low hormone production. It is unknown why the immune system decides to attack the thyroid gland, but it is thought to be hereditary.

Hypothyroidism in dogs can also occur due to thyroid gland atrophy. During this process, the functional tissue of the thyroid gland is replaced by fat. Veterinarians also don’t know why this process occurs.

A pituitary gland tumor is another cause, but it is extremely rare. The pituitary gland is located at the base of a dog’s brain and is responsible for secreting thyroid-stimulating hormone. In dogs with a pituitary tumor, this process is impaired, and the thyroid gland is not stimulated. Therefore, thyroid hormones are not produced.

Hypothyroidism causes numerous symptoms in dogs, which may include the following:

    • Weight gain despite a normal appetite
    • Fat accumulation around shoulders, neck and hind end
    • Lethargy
    • Dull hair coat
    • Slow hair regrowth
    • Flaky and/or thickened skin
    • Patches of alopecia (hair loss)
    • Slow heart rate
    • Cold intolerance
    • Recurrent skin and ear infections
    • Fertility issues
    • Reduced tear production (dry eye)
    • Nerve abnormalities

Dogs with hypothyroidism may have high cholesterol, high fat content and mild anemia on bloodwork.

How to treat hypothyroidism in dogs

Dogs with hypothyroidism require oral supplementation of a synthetic thyroid hormone called levothyroxine. This medication is given daily and is relatively inexpensive. The dose, which is determined by the dog’s weight, may change over time based on his response to treatment. Periodic bloodwork helps the veterinarian assess hormone levels and adjust the dose when necessary. Supplementation is required for the remainder of the pet’s life.

Since hypothyroid dogs are already prone to high cholesterol, switching to a low-fat kibble is beneficial. Omega-3 fatty acids also promote a healthier skin and coat. Your veterinarian can recommend the best type of food to meet your dog’s specific needs.

    Life expectancy

Hypothyroidism is not a curable condition. However, most healthy, hypothyroid dogs live long, happy lives with the proper monitoring and treatment. Dogs with additional health issues, such as heart disease or kidney disease, may have shorter lifespans due to the difficulty in managing hypothyroidism alongside concurrent illness.

If left untreated, hypothyroidism results in a poor quality of life, an increased risk of complications and a reduced lifespan. Early diagnosis ensures your pet receives the treatment he needs to be happy and healthy. If you notice any signs of hypothyroidism in your dog, bring him to the veterinarian for evaluation.
